The twelve essays in ths volume, by one on the world's leading authorities on translation, deal with aspects of the function of language structure, and especially semantic structure, in translational equivalence across languages and cultures. The are divided into three sections. The first section, comprising six essays, deals with linguistic and semantic structure, principles of translations, adn analysis of mening in its various dimensions, such as the referencial, the connotative, and the emotive. The second covers the more general problem of language and communication in multilingual societies with varieties of languages, pidgins, and koinés, The last two essays survey the contribution of Christian missionaries to language science and the relevance of contemporary linguistics to Biblical scholarship. The bok concludes with an "Authorr's Postscrip", in which Professor Nida reviews and reflects on his life work, and a complete bibliography of his work to date. Eugene A.
