What, exactly, is entailed by "a sound knowledge of the law" is a subject which has not been discussed in depth. Courses of study have sometines been set up without a clear idea of the needs of students of legal translation, and so we find law courses being taught by professors who ignore such needs. (Abstract of a paper presented at the 30th Annual Conference of the American Translators Association, Washington, D.C., October 1989, and accepted by, though not presented at, the First Language International Conference, Denmark, June 1991)".
