The sector of remote-controlled unmanned aircraft vehicles, also called drones or UAVs (unmanned aircraft vehicles), has grown considerably in recent years. As Isabel Maetre, director of the Spanish Aviation Safety Agency (AESA), stated at the first Drone Industry Summit held in Madrid (2016), the sector has experienced considerable growth in the first 20 month since the Spanish regulatory framework came into force, with 1.249 drone operators an 2.241 drones currently registred in AESA (AESA, 2016). According to Maestre, the UAV sector will account for 10 per cent of the aviation ector within the next 10 years. In the regard, following the entry into force of regulations governing the use of UAVs, which have allowed the development of safety measures in this emerging sector.
