The ambition of this book is twofold: firstly, to update the state of the art in research on simultaneous interpretation with contributions from modern linguistic and cognitive theory, and in so doing, to make a critical examination of the "primitives" of translations studies, and secondly, to demonstrate the value of T&I data to the study of language and the mind. It attemps a frontal attack on a problem which has blocked interpretation research-how to represent the knowledge and context available to the communicators, especially the interpreter-by placing the translation process within a theory of communication which suggests how these are constrained.
