Resumen: Hay un número creciente de personas de países diversos, que, por diferentes motivos, se ven atraídas por la lengua española y deciden aprenderla. Asimismo, muchos organismos e instituciones educativas de todo el mundo incluyen nuestra lengua como materia de aprendizaje obligatorio u opcional. El auge de la enseñanza del español ha supuesto una explosión sin precedentes de la diversidad lingüística en las aulas, lo que dificulta la tarea del profesor y pone en cuestión los métodos y materiales tradicionales. Esta situación se complica aún más cuando se trata de las preposiciones en español. Un problema con el que se ve confrontado cualquier profesor de ELE es cómo enseñar las preposiciones a sus alumnos extranjeros. Sobre algunos usos preposicionales se pueden formular generalizaciones, algunas de las cuales incluso pueden ser muy útiles en la enseñanza. Pero sobre otros muchos no se pueden formular reglas, sino que son hechos sueltos que simplemente hay que aceptar y aprender como tales. Este manual es, pues, un intento de ayudar al profesor a distinguir entre lo uno y lo otro, y a prepararse de tal forma que en clase sepa discernir entre gramática y léxico, es decir, entre los casos que piden o admiten una explicación y aquellos donde sólo vale el buen ejemplo. Esto, unido a su metodología innovadora, a la abundancia de actividades, de sugerencias y de resúmenes, lo convierte en un manual básico para cualquier profesor o alumno y para todo el mundo interesado en las preposiciones.

"The Practice of Language Teaching" deals specifically with the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL). It is not focused especially on English as a second language (ESL) although much of the context of the book can be applied to that slightly different teaching situation. The book is directed at the teaching of "general" English; the teaching of English for specific purposes (ESP) does not form a major part of the work.
