I, Claudius por
  • Graves, Robert
Resumen: Claudius was the fourth Emperor of Rome (r. 41-54 AD). Historically, Claudius' family kept him out of public life until his sudden coronation at the age of forty nine. This was due to his mental illness, which included a stammer, a limp, and various nervous tics which made him appear mentally deficient to his relatives. This is how he was defined by scholars for most of history, and Graves uses these peculiarities to develop a sympathetic character whose survival in a murderous dynasty depends upon his family's incorrect assumption that he is a harmless idiot.

Resumen: This book addresses the need for a systematic approach to training in translation studies by drawing on key areas in modern linguistic theory and relating them systematically to a number of translation problems and strategies. The strategies are identified by an examination of authentic examples of translated texts in a variety of languages. No knowledge of linguistics or foreign languages is assumed. Each chapter begins with an explanation of the key linguistic concepts referred to and ends with a series of practical exercises. By striking a balance between theory and practice, the book provides a sound basis for training professional translators.

Resumen: Intonation of colloquial English (British English) has been written for language students at intermediate to advanced level and for 1st year university students of phonetics. The authors analyse the intonation of English into a system of ten tone groups which, with their functions, are described in the early chapters of the book. Then comes an extensive series of practice drills with each tone group treated separately and in certain common tone group sequences: the functions of each tone group are made evident by means of Verbal Contexts which precede the drill sentences. Finally there is a number of dialogues demonstrating the ten tone groups in action within the framework of everyday conversational speech.

Resumen: Author's Note. I often find it useful, or at least amusing, to think of a book in terms of a gesture, a mood, a posture. In which case the gesture of this book might be that of a busy but inexpert feIlow dashing about the narrow confines of his territory waving a net on the end of a long stick. It's not a butterfly net, by the looks of it. It' s altogether too big for that, huge in fact. But it might be a will- o -the-wisp net.

Lady Susan / The Watsons / Sanditon por

  • Drabble, Margaret [ed., intr.]
Series Penguin ClassicsTemas: AUTORES BRITANICOS; NOVELAS.
Resumen: These three short works show Austen experimenting with a variety of different literary styles, from melodrama to satire, and exploring a range of social classes and settings. The early epistolary novel Lady Susan depicts an unscrupulous coquette, toying with the affections of several men. In contrast, The Watsons is a delightful fragment, whose spirited heroine - Emma - finds her marriage opportunities limited by poverty and pride. Meanwhile Sanditon, set in a seaside resort, offers a glorious cast of hypochondriacs and spectators, treated by Austen with both amusement and scepticism.

This is particularly useful to a practitioner venturing into an unfamiliar field, who wants a quick guide to his subject...the balance and composition of the entries could not be improved upon...". Resumen: The common problems of English language structure have to be overcome by all students, and the difficulties they find are similar in all parts of the world. Regional differences can always be dealt with by the teacher, who should be aware of the particular problems of his students. The following general principles are self-evident: all students want to speak, write and read the normal accepted English of today and this can only be achieved by constante practice of existing forms, with some rational explanation of the grammatical devices employed, wherever this is possible.

Man of the century : Winston Churchill and his legend since 1945 por
  • Ramsden, John, 1947-2009
Series Longman History of the Conservative PartyTemas: BIOGRAFIAS; HISTORIA.
Resumen: He is commemorated throughout the world in museums and statuary, on street signs and in gift shops; even more prominently, Winston Churchill's monumental presence persists in shelves upon shelves of biographies and histories, dozens of which were written by Churchill himself and have been international bestsellers. While political figures are routinely the objects of intense posthumous scrutiny, few have achieved such pervasive and ongoing influence, and fewer still have so adeptly orchestrated their own place in history. Man of the Century is the often surprising story of how Winston Churchill, in the last years of his life, carefully crafted his reputation for posterity, and it reveals him as the twentieth century's pioneering, and perhaps most gifted, "spin doctor." It is also a far-ranging account not only of Churchill's continuing impact on British, American, and European politics, but also of the powerful legacy of his vision of a common destiny and heritage for English-speaking peoples around the world. In the first book to examine the full scope of Churchill's postwar influence, John Ramsden draws on fresh material and extensive research from three continents to argue that the statesman's force of personality and romantic, imperial notion of Britain have contributed directly to many political events of the last several decades―including American involvement in Vietnam and the role of the Anglo-American alliance in promoting and protecting a certain vision of world order. Man of the Century captures the complexities of Churchill's story and political legacy as well as the spirit and irreverent power of the statesman who became a modern legend.
