Resumen: Conference papers rarely make good reading. Written to be read aloud, they fall somewhere between the speech, which is hortatory and calculated to persuade, and the essay, which is discursive and was rudely defined to by Dr Johnson as "an irregular indigested piece". Except, perhaps, papers presented at meetings on the exact sciences, once in print they are rarely heard of again. This collection of papers on translation has some chance of meeting a better fate. One difference between it and other books on the subject known to me is the emotion stirred in the reader by so many of its contributors.

Resumen: Las V Jornadas Internacionales de Traductología, organizadas por el Área de Traductología (ATRA) del Centro de Investigaciones de la Facultad de Lenguas (CIFAL) proponen aproximarse a este campo disciplinar desde diversas perspectivas para poner en comunicación la teoría y la práctica, la docencia y el desempeño profesional, entre muchos otros aspectos desde los que puede abordarse la traductología. Se pretende generar un diálogo hacia el interior de la disciplina, pero también con las áreas de estudio afines que la atraviesan y la complementan generando un punto de encuentro y un foro de debate y reflexión sobre todos los ámbitos de la traductología.

Resumen: This volume brings together a selection of papers presented at the IXth Intemational Conference on Translation and Interpreting (September 25-27, 1995, Prague) jointly organized by the Institute of Translation Studies, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, and the Ecole de Traduction et d'Interprétation, University of Geneva. The organizers dedicated this conference to Jirí Lery (1926-1967) and Anton Popovic (1933-1984), two scholars who made important contributions to the development of translation studies in the 20th century and whose names are often mentioned in connection with two European schools of translation studies, the Polysystem Theory and the Manipulation School. Both scholars trace their heritage to the Prague Linguistic Circle, whose development in tum was significantly influenced by Ferdinand de Saussure, the linguist whose work is foreyer associated with the University of Geneva. The Prague School integrated both linguistic and literary phenomena into the wider system of social values of a particular cornmunity. Lery's objective was to isolate those factors in the translation process that affect the translator's work and to improve our understanding of how a particular method of translation potentially modifies the effect the translated text has on the reader. For him translation was a process of communication, and he can thus be considered to be an .important forel1lnner of contemporary thinking on translation. It was only after his death that the idea of a normative, prescriptive approach towards translation was replacep by a new approach that respected the translator's individuality and creativity and viewed translation as a process of cornmunication, in which the original author played as important a role as the translator. The contributions in Sections 2 and 3 focus on one or more aspects of this issue.

Resumen: Translation has been the fellow-traveller of mankind ever since people began speaking diferent languages, that is according to the biblical legend since the Almighty Creator's punishment fell upon them for their audacity. Today nobody denies the fact that the translator's profession is one of the most ancient professions in the world, although it is difficult to say when it began exactly. Literary translation marked the beginning of the original literature and art of almost all the peoples on the Earth. In our contemporary world the literary translation arouses continual and lively interest in all countries and in all its varied aspects in theory and practice; historical, linguistic, social, cultural, and philosophical. To take in all the appraisals, maxims, witty reasoning, aphorisms and recommendation in one survey would be a very attractive but almost impossible tast.

Resumen: Una de las vías más importantes para la transmisión del conocimiento especializado son las traducciones. A través de este procedimiento se ponen en contacto distintas comunidades lingüísticas, se comparte el conocimiento, se divulgan y se universalizan las ciencias, las técnicas, las ideas. Pero además, las traducciones de los textos especializados tienen unas consecuencias lingüísticas y textuales dignas de estudio. A través de las traducciones se transmiten nuevos conceptos cuyas denominaciones es preciso adaptar a la lengua de llegada, y esta adaptación juega un papel fundamental en la estandarización de una lengua, sobre todo en un ámbito en el que la estandarización es tan necesaria, como en de los textos especializados, también sometidos a la adaptación a partir de modelos procedentes de otras culturas. En este volumen se reúnen una serie de estudios de diversos investigadores que tienen en común su interés por la historia de los lenguajes especializados, y que prestan una especial atención a los fenómenos de estandarización que se han producido a partir de las traducciones de diversos tipos de textos (científicos, didácticos, lexicográficos, etc.) en distintos campos de la especialidad y con consecuencias en las diferentes lenguas románicas peninsulares.

Resumen: Recopilación de gran parte de las conferencias y comunicaciones presentadas al Primer Seminario Internacional sobre Género y Lenguaje (El género de la traducción - La traducción del género), celebrada en la Universidad de Valencia, durante los días 16, 17 y 18 de octubre de 2002. Se trataba de la primera vez en que unas reflexiones sobre dicha temática se celebraban en Valencia: unas reflexiones de auténtico carácter internacional, con acercamientos y propuestas diversos. Los artículos incluidos en estas Actas van desde la presentación de la mujer en la lengua y la cultura hasta la traducción feminista, pasando por el estudio del género en la lengua y el discurso o la enseñanza del género y de la traducción.

Resumen: Gendered and sexual identities are unstable constructions which reveal a great deal about the ideologies and power relatinships affecting individuals and societies. The interaction between gender/sex studies and translation studies points to a fascinating arena of discursive conflict in which our intimate desires and identities are established or rejected, (re)negotiated or censored, sanctioned or tabooed. This volume explores diverse and heterogeneous aspects of the manipulation of gendered and sexual identities. Contributors examine translation as a feminist practice and/or theory; the importance of gender-related context in translation; the creation of a female image of secondariness through dubbing and state censoriship; attempts to suppress the blantantly patriarchal and sexist references in the German dubbed versions of James Bond films; the construction of national heroism and national identity as male preserve; the enactment of Chamberlain's 'gender metaphorics' in Scliar and Calvino; the transformation of Japanese romance fiction through Harlequin translations; the translations of the erotic as site for testing the complex rewriting(s) of identity in sociohistorical term; and the emergence of NRTs (New Reproductive Technologies), which is causing fundamental changes in the perception of 'creativity' or 'procreation' as male domains.
