Resumen: La traducción es una condición indispensable para que se produzca el intercambio cultural, en su sentido más amplio, entre países que hablan lenguas diferentes y desconocidas entre sí. No es sino el deseo de saber lo que piensan, dicen y hacen los otros y viceversa lo que ha animado a eruditos o políticos de todas las lenguas y nacionalidades a recurrir a la traducción y a la interpretación. Tampoco es un secreto que algunas de las ideas que caracterizan a determinadas culturas son muchas veces producto de una reflexión inducida por la vía indirecta de la traducción, que ha ido modificando su primitiva formulación hasta volverla irreconocible e inespecífica, convirtiéndola en patrimonio de la humanidad. En este trabajo se ha tratado reunir la mayor cantidad posible de datos sobre casi todos los aspectos de la traducción e interpretación, referidos al mundo entero, aunque el punto de referencia del informe sea España y el español.
