Resumen: Drawing on cognitive linguistics and psychology, this paper attempts to model the subtitler's decision-making as involving two types of operations. They are referred to as System 1 and System 2, the former being fast, automatic and requiring little effort, and the latter being slower, controlled and effortful. To test the dual-processing hypothesis, I analyse trainee subtitlers' renditions with a focus on the construction "you + to like + me" which exemplifies a cross-language asymmetry and a potential (disguised) translation challenge. Remarkably, the English construction is employed equally-conventionally to represent the concept of being favourably disposed to somebody in a non-physical/sexual manner, on the one hand, and being attracted to somebody, on the other. In Polish, however, the "prototypes" will typically be represented as distinct expressions. The present findings suggest that because differentiating between the prototypes and coding them linguistically is not challenging to the participants, it is the automation of their judgment that leads them to settle for flawed target variants (Stage 1). Additional evidence is obtained (Stage 2) as participants are induced to go from System 1 to System 2 thinking-a cross-stage comparison indicates that the fast-to-slow switch reorients the trainees' subtitling choices and ultimately improves translation quality.

Resumen: Cognitive understandings of metaphor have led to significant advances in understandings of how to translate metaphor. Theoretical accounts of metaphor not as a figure of speech but as a mode of thought, have provided useful tools for analysis and for translation work. This has usually happened at the level of individual metaphorical expressions, while the deeper lesson of cognitive theories has not been taken to heart by translation scholars, with a few signal exceptions. In this article we explore the potential of Conceptual Metaphor Theory for translating related metaphorical expressions within a specific text. We propose a model for understanding metaphor translation that takes as its unit of analysis not the individual metaphorical expression but the conceptual metaphor, of which the metaphorical expression is but a particular instantiation. It is this theoretical grounding that will allow us to propose a model for translating developed metaphors and related metaphorical expressions.

Resumen: Much has been said about how ideological tendencies can influence the content of a translation and the Spanish version of Prescott's work History of the Conquest of Mexico, with a Preliminary View of the Ancient Mexican Civilization, and the Life of the Conqueror, Hernando Cortés is a clear example of this influence. Manipulation was the strategy that the Mexican editorial promoted and it is what the translator yielded to, but not in a way that was expected. Focusing on the account of the episode of the conquest of Mexico in which Montezuma and his tragic death are prominent, this article will show how Navarro, the translator, meticulously respects the North American's portrayal of the Aztec ruler, whom he considers to be hypocritical, superstitious, lavish, weak and fainthearted. When Navarro does manipulate the description, it is principally in order to accentuate some negative trait of the Aztec leader which has already been presented in the original text or to prevent the Mexican reader from having to see in print the name of the emperor who was associated with incidents which many Mexicans might consider lamentable. At the same time, it will be clear that cognitive linguistics provides adequate theoretical support in order to be able to comprehend that both the original and translated texts highlight the idea of Montezuma as a metaphor and symbol of failure.

Resumen: La autora de este trabajo sostiene que, para realizar una buena traducción, no es suficiente dominar los códigos «fuente» y «meta», sino que es fundamental conocer la naturaleza del lenguaje, en toda su plasticidad. Y este es el aporte clave de los estudios lingüísticos.

Resumen: Este trabajo describe algunos de los principales puntos de contacto entre el estudio de la traducción y ciertas disciplinas pertenecientes al ámbito de la denominada 'ciencia cognitiva', con el objetivo de mostrar algunos de los posibles beneficios que dichas disciplinas pueden aportar al ámbito traductológico. Intentaremos argumentar que un acercamiento de tipo cognitivo puede contribuir a poner fin a los estériles debates y modos tradicionales de categorización que han contribuido al estancamiento de los estudios de traducción y ayudar a elaborar un modelo general que lleve a cabo un estudio de la traducción en su globalidad y no sólo de ciertas formas de ésta.

Resumen: A partir del análisis de la alternancia de las formas inglesas del tiempo verbal futuro, la autora sostiene que abordajes de este tipo nos permiten acercarnos al perfilamiento cognitivo del hablante y así captar los aspectos más sutiles del mensaje que debemos traducir.
