Resumen: The authors have conducted a study aiming at determining the unit of translation (UT), a subject of debate for more than forty years. The article consists of a review of relevant literature, a redefinition of the UT, an examination of sampled translated texts, excerpts and sentences of over 23,000 pages, including the Bible and Soul Mountain, translated from the Nobel Prize-winning novel of the Chinese author, Gao Xingjian, and an international survey. The contrastive analysis of these ST and TT materials shows that translations are done sentence by sentence within context and thus identifies the sentence in context as the UT. This identification is further confirmed by an international survey of 66 professional translators and translation editors. By verifying the UT, this study indicates that for a UT-related theory to be testable, the translation theorist should no longer ignore or sideline the sentence from its context.

Se ha intentado también determinar su longitud y se puede ver que con respecto a ello hay gran disparidad entre los teóricos. Todas las propuestas presentan similitudes y divergencias pero ninguna postura, sea normativa, descriptiva o reflexivo-explicativa, ha logrado aún en el siglo XXI definir a la Unidad de Información.

Resumen: This is a completely revised and updated version of one of the standard works on translation theory. The original model was one of the first attempts to apply pragmatic theories of language use to the assessment of translation quality. This pragmatic perspective is now enriched in the light of research into the interdependency of lenguage, situation and culture. Specifically, issues of culture-specific discourse behaviour modes, value-systems and perspectives are confronted with the demands of intelcultural communication imposed by the translational task. In the light of detailed contrastive studies of the language-pair German and English, the author illustrates the workings of a so-called "cultural filter" in different types of text under different conditions. In the light of these findings, the notions of "covert" and "overt" translation and their appropriacy under different social constraints are radically revised. The new model for the analysis of source text and translation is applied to a corpus of German-English English-German translations.

Resumen: This book is about the love-hate relationship between linguistics and translation theory. Many linguists have no interest in translation theory, and some translation theorists are increasingly declaring that linguistics has nothing to offer their discipline. The author of this book does not entirely share this sceptical attitude towards linguistics; he does not see linguistics as the grand liberator or the great oppressor of translation studies; he believes rather that there are many things in translation which can only be described and explained by linguistics. Further, a translator who lacks at least a basic knowledge of linguistics is somebody who is working with an incomplete toolkit.

Resumen: The theory identifies the mental and cognitive processes involved in both oral and written translation: understanding the text, deverbalizing its language, re-expressing sense. For the purposes of translation, languages are a means of transmitting sense, they are not to be translated as such. Although translation involves the use of correspondences, translators generally set up equivalence between text segments. The synecdochic nature of both languages and texts, a phenomenon discussed in the book, explains why translation is possible across language differences. The many practical problems faced by translators, the difference between translation exercises used as a language teaching tool and professional translation, translating into a foreign language, and machine translation as compared to human translation are also discussed.

Resumen: In this article I will discuss the implications of considering tranlation as a regulated discursive practice whose determinations are historical in nature. In the first part I will attempt to show some of the reasons why it is important for us to look a traslation, and then - in the second part- I will take examples of remarks by translators published in prefaces to their translations into French which appeared in the first part of the eighteenth century. I would claim, however, that such an approach would also fruitful if applied to modern translation theory.

Resumen: Qu'est-ce que traduire? Pour les profanes, c'est trouver des correspondances dans une autre langue. Pour le praticien, comme pour le traductologue, c'est comprendre le sens d'un texte original et le restituer. Cet ouvrage décrit le triple processus de la traduction: compréhension -déverbalisation- réexpression du sens. Dans le processus de la traduction, les langues sont, en effect, des véhicules du sens; elles ne sont donc pas l'objet à traduire. L'examen du texte traduit révèle certes l'existence de quelques correspondances de mots mais il est essentiellement constitué d'equivalences de discours. Cet ouvrage traite également des nombreux problèmes auxquels se heurte la pratique: la différence entre la traduction dans l'institution pédagogique et la traduction professionnelle, la traduction en langue étrangère et la traduction automatique par rapport à la traduction humaine.

Resumen: La presente obra demuestra rigurosamente que, en no pocos casos, el traductor se vuelve adaptador. Este trabajo trata de la adaptación puntual y global de obras didácticas que hablan de la lengua. Se inserta en el marco de la comunicación inferencial [Sperber & Wilson] y de la traducción interpretativa [Selesdovitch & Lederer]. A partir de ejemplos prácticos y numerosos antecedentes, define las modalidades, condiciones y restricciones de la adaptación para llegar a una definición del concepto de ésta. En la segunda parte de esta obra, se procede a un estudio de casos extraídos de la adaptación española del manual de iniciación a la traducción de J. Delisle [1980], con miras a confirmar tres hipótesis: adaptar es recrear, adaptar es una necesidad y entre traducir y adaptar existe una frontera.

Resumen: En el contacto intercultural, los interlocutores actúan y perciben al otro según los patrones de orientación de su propia cultura. Tal condicionamiento cultural, con frecuencia, da lugar a proyecciones del propio marco de referencia sobre lo ajeno, lo que, a su vez, puede llevar a malentendidos o incluso al fracaso de la comunicación. Partimos de la idea de que es tarea del traductor como experto profesional hace posible una comunicación intercultural satifactoria. Para ello, tiene que haber desarrollado una competencia cultural experta. En este artículo se propone una definición más detallada de dicha competencia, partiendo de una síntesis entre la teoría funcionalista general de la Traducción y los Estudios de Comunicación intercultural.

Resumen: La cuestión de la Traducibilidad de un texto solo empezó abocar interés para la teoría de la traducción a finales del siglo pasado, dado que hasta entonces la atención se había centrado casi exclusivamente en los procedimientos técnicos del traductor y que actitud debía tomar frente al texto original para alcanzar sus objetivos preestablecidos para la calidad del texto resultante. Sin embargo, es cierto que Wilhelm von Humboldt había abordado la cuestión a finales del siglo XVIII.

Resumen: De ser puente neutral y equivalente absoluto, el traductor se ha convertido en un elemento heteroglósico, en una de las múltiples voces que pululan en los textos y que reflejan la diversidad y la hibridación del mundo contemporáneo; por eso tendrá que intentar comprender el contesto híbrido en el que se halla el texto y el sujeto. Resumen: Tradución, manipulación, descontrucción empieza por plantear problemas que son y serán eternos en los estudios de traducción, y que van desde las cualidades que debe poseer el problema de la equivalencia, pasando por los tipos de la traducción posibles o por la cuestión de si existe o no una lengua original esencial. Todo esto sirve como base para escudriñar los pros y los contras de algunas de las teorías más novedosas en el campo de la traducción durante los últimos años: la llamada Escuela de la Manipulación y las aportaciones del post-estructuralismo y la descontrucción a la traductología.
