Resumen: For the diverse universe of digital content generated by big data to be useful, it requires transformation for different channels (such as web, mobile, and print), conversion for various applications, and localization for other markets. This is an area of opportunity for translators and interpreters. Go to any conference and you'll find a few new additions to the usual buzzword bingo of industry jargon-"big data" and numbers with lots of zeroes. You'll hear about the massive growth in digitized data, how often a given sector's knowledge base doubles, and what companies are doing to manage and interpret that flood of data. This burgeoning trove of bytes includes structured databases, application code, images, videos, and text. You'll also hear about machine learning and how big data contributes to making software more responsive and useful to customers' needs.

There are three common situations where monolingal references will be provided or will prove useful: 1.When translating academic articles or reports containing a bibliography. 2.When translating marketing material or manuals for a client who provides you with similar material to consult in order to maintain consistent terminology. 3.When translating legistation, where terminonogy must be consistent with prior laws.

Detalles de publicación: Binghamton : American Translator Association; State University of New York at Birghamtom, 1988
Resumen: Editor's Notes: Translators may be surprised to learn that the idea of using machines to facilitate the translation task has been around for a very long time. Already more than half a century ago inventors were at work on machines that would effect the transfer from one language to another.l In as early as 1933 a patent was granted in France to Georges Artsruni for his "mechanical brain" that could replace words or combinations of words with equivalents retrieved from a target dic~ tionary. Also, in that same year, P.P. Trojanskij, working in the USSR, proposed a complete translation process that would be largely automatic. Words were to be entered in a source dictionary together with "logical analysis marks" and then paired with their equivalents in a target dictionary, which also had their associated marks. An input text, matched word for word against the source dictionary, would undergo analysis and, based on the information from the analysis marks, be converted into logical formo An automated lookup would then retrieve, for the elements in logical form, tl¡eir corresponding equivalents in the target dictionary, and the grammatical forms would be generated automatically, based on the marks assigned to each entry. T rojanskij envisioned that human beings would be needed at the front end, to supply the words and the logical marks for the dictionary, and at the output end, to modify the text so that it would have the characteris~ tics of natural language. Trojanskij's model is in fact a clear and accurate description of machine translation (MT) as we know it today. The process was not to become a reality, however, until computer science itself caught up with his vision.

Resumen: How did two translation courses taught by the same instructor with a similar course template and teaching methods wind up with such different outcomes? In 2013, I taught a four-credit course in which 14 rookie translation students rendered all 9,228 words of Guy de Maupassant's Le Horla. They did this in fewer than 15 weekly meetings, each lasting almost two hours. My students at the New School for Social Research (NSSR) in New York City managed to complete this lengthy literary translation even though I also brought in three guest speakers, held a midterm and final exam, and administered bi-weekly terminology quizzes. How did I manage this? I fostered grit, determination, passion for the text, and collaboration, along with relying on my own willful blindness and a touch of beginner's luck. I say beginner's luck because, as I learned later, this group of students had a particular alchemy that helped them succeed.

Resumen: For medical translators, a closer examination and dissection of the SOAP note format is key to understanding how doctors think. Progress notes and patient records are the medical translator's bread and butter, but this does not prevent even the most seasoned medical translators from making mistakes. While most medical translators are experienced in translating these documents, failure to fully understand the nuances of their structure, language, and rationale limits a translator's ability to replicate the style and voice of health care practitioners. Furthermore, it creates roadblocks when attempting to decipher strings of murky acronyms and seemingly unintelligible scribbles.
