Resumen: En esta comunicación quisiéramos analizar, en primer lugar, las distintas acepciones, en general, de la palabra dull en ingles y sus equivalentes en castellano. Luego estudiaremos el significado de la palabra dull en el contexto de los vv.4 y 189 de The Waste land de T. S. Eliot, y su traduccion en diecisiete versiones a lenguas románticas y germánicas (entre ellas siete al castellano). Finalmente, comentaremos las divergencias entre una y otra traduccion y se hará hincapié en la dificultad de fijar, establecer o restaurar el sentido del original, esto es, de esclarecer las condiciones y la validez de la significación en el original.

Resumen: The study presented in this article analyses the influence that translation has exerted on the work of Basque writer and translator Joseba Sarrionandia. This analysis shows that the interaction between his original works and his translations is bidirectional, and that the distinction between creation and recreation is much more confused that it can seem in the beginning. By means of intertextual references, rewriting of poems, variations or imitations of texts written by his predecessors, or even by composing translations without originals, Sarrionandia throws into question some of the notions of the modern discourse of translation, and suggests a new way of understanding literature and translation. His strategies aim to demonstrate that it is impossible to create from scratch, that each poet writes over the traces left by the poets he has read, and that each of his texts will necessarily be a conversion or a translation of the literary tradition he has inherited. Therefore, there is no original text, and each text is no more than a translation of a translation. However, the links and relations that each writer/translator suggests with regard to this literary tradition will be new and original, and it is in these new relations that the creating power of translation lies.

Resumen: Para entender en su sentido más amplio la importancia literaria de las traducciones de T.S.Eliot al español y a la vez establecer cierto esquema de información sobre ellas, quisiera plantear una serie de preguntas y empezar a contestarlas. Quiénes hicieron las traducciones? Qué obras de Eliot decidieron traducir y por qué razones? Con quiénes colaboraron? Cómo las tradujeron, es decir, cuáles son algunas de las estrategias que emplearon? Y finalmente, Quiénes dejaron constancia de una lectura de las traducciones? Las respuestas, por incompletas que sean, a estas preguntas nos dejarán un boceto de los gustos literarios de la época, y ofreceran una idea bien clara de la recepción de la obra de Eliot en el mundo hispanohablante durante un período de trece años.

Resumen: El presente artículo pretende reflexionar sobre las dificultades de la traducción de poesía, acercándonos a la complejidad de su definición o caracterización, a los distintos modos en que se expresa y a algunos ejemplos que ilustren dichas dificultades.
