Resumen: En Melbourne, Australia, se llevó a cabo, entre el 12 y el 16 de febrero de 1996, el XIV Congreso de la Federación Internacional de Traductores [FIT]. Representantes de todo el mundo discutieron los distintos problemas que enfrentan los traductores y pudieron establecerse contactos importantes para intercambios entre los profesionales allí presentes.

Resumen: This paper investigates strategies for the translation of irony in English editorials and feature articles into Arabic. It explores an area that has not been adequately tackled in a linguistic framework either on the individual language analysis level or the translation level.The plan to achieve this consists of five steps: (1) describing lexical, grammatical and rhetorical devices of irony from Arabic and English editorials and feature articles, written in Australia on identical political topics and at the same period; (2) describing the linguistic exponents of the rhetorical devices of irony in English and Arabic; (3) explaining the relation between ironic devices and coherence and text structure; (4) conducting a contrastive analysis based on the findings; and (5) using the findings to suggest strategies for the translation of irony. Several linguistic disciplines and sub-disciplines are invoked for the explanation of the concept of irony, namely, stylistics, discourse, sociolinguistics, behavioural linguistics and psycholinguistics, considering that irony pertains to a 'discourse semantic' field (Van Dijk 1977).

Resumen: Codes of ethics in translating and interpreting have become increasingly examined in recent literature, as practitioners in ever-widening fields of practice see such codes as essential in underpinning their professionalism. While such codes in various professions set standards for their association's membership, codes in some sectors of translating and interpreting often have a wider function, detailing ground rules and techniques for practice and serving as educational documents, for users of services as much as for practitioners. The code of ethics developed by the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators [AUSIT] has been often cited in international literature as a broad, comprehensive generic code for professional practice. When this code was recently rewritten by its association, the wider functions of the code, as well as core considerations of practitioners' role, conduct and autonomy were extensively debated. This article examines the issues that arose in rewriting the AUSIT code, drawing on international comparisons of how other codes have defined their central tenets.

Resumen: Durante el último Congreso Mundial de la Federación Internacional de Traductores [FIT], tuvimos el honor de entrevistarnos con el nuevo presidente de dicha institución, Gentile, Adolfo. En la charla se tocaron diversos temas relacionados con la actualidad de la Federación y la profesión del Traductor Público. Además el Sr. Gentile vertió conceptos muy interesantes acerca de nuestro Colegio.

Resumen: "Think globally, act locally", is the manssage of Language Policy: Dominant, Pluralist, Challenges. The book examines the impact of English in countries in wich it is taken for granted-Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and the USA. It explores how the dominance of English impacts on the development of national language policies, the maintenance of minority languages, the ability to provide services in other languages, the efforts to promote first language and bilingual education programs, and the opportunities for adult and child second language and literacy training. The book examines language and language-in-education policies in these countries and the extent to wich English influences some polices or prelude others. It explores the viability of a statement on national language policies that could be adopted by the International Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages [TESOL] organization as statement of principles.

Resumen: The purpose of this book is to examine the experience of a number of countries in grappling with the problems of reconciling the two fields of competition policy and intellectual property rights. The first part of the book indicates the variation in legislative models as well as the wide variety of judicial and administrative doctrines that have been used. The jurisdiction selected for study are the three major trading blocks with the longest experience of case law -the EU, the USA and Japan- and three less populous countries with open economies: Australia, Ireland and Singapore. In the second part of the book we look at a number of issues closely related to the interface between competition law and intellectual property rights. Separate chapters analyse the issue of parallel trading and exhaustion of iPRs; the issue of technology transfer; and the economics of the interface between intellectual property and competition law.

Resumen: Research into courtroom discourse has suggested a strong correlation between the way witnesses speak and the way they are evaluated by juries or the bench (Giles & Sasoon, 1983; O'Barr, 1982). Some of the factors that have been found to negatively impact evaluations include witnesses' hesitant speech, upward intonation and non-standard or foreign accents (Wodak-Engels, 1984; Frumkin, 2007). When witnesses give evidence through an interpreter, an extra layer of potential bias can be added. Experimental studies have shown that interpreters'changes to the style of the original, such as the addition or omission of hesitations or fillers and hedges, can have a significant impact on the jurors' evaluation of the credibility of the witness (Berk-Seligson, 1990; Stephan and Stephan, 1986; Mendoza, Hosch, Ponder, & Carrillo, 2000; Hale, 1997, 2002, 2004), but no research has been done to determine whether the source language or the accent of the interpreter have any impact. This paper will present an overview of research into the influence of interpreters on the perceptions created by jurors. It will then present the results of a recent study that aimed to discover whether mock jurors were influenced by two factors: 1. the original language of the witness (Arabic, Chinese or Spanish), and 2. the accent of the interpreter when interpreting into English. The study found that there was no difference according to language, and that participants found the defendant more honest, credible, trustworthy, and persuasive when the interpreter had a slight foreign accent. Importantly, they were less likely to find the witness guilty if they were presented with his testimony through an accented versus a non-accented interpreter. The paper will speculate on the reasons behind these counter-intuitive results.

Resumen: This book explores the intricacies of court interpreting through a thorough analysis of the authentic discourse of the English-speaking participants, the Spanish-speaking witnesses and the interpreters. Written by a practitioner, educator and researcher, the book presents the reader with real issues that most court interpreters face during their work and shows through the results of careful research studies that interpreter's choices can have varying degrees of influence on the triadic exchange. It aims to raise the practitioners' awareness of the significance of their choices and attempts to provide a theoretical basis for interpreters to make informed decisions rather than intuitive ones. It also suggests solutions for common problems. The book highlights the complexities of court interpreting and argues for thorough training for practicing interpreters to improve their performance as well as for better understanding of their task from the legal profession. Although the data is drawn from Spanish-English cases, the main results can be extended to any language combination. The book is written in a clear, accessible language and is aimed at practicing interpreters, students and educators of interpreting, linguists and legal professionals.

Resumen: El reconocimiento internacional alcanzado por la literatura aborigen australiana ha suscitado el interés de diversos investigadores, quienes han identificado en esta literatura tradiciones, modos de expresión de un compromiso político y una retórica característicos. Precisamente en esta literatura, expresión de la diversidad cultural aborigen australiana, se instaura una relación sincrética entre la lengua aborigen y la lengua dominante, el inglés, que da cuenta de una construcción identitaria discursiva que resulta relevante para la traducción. El concepto de equivalencia ha sido central para la teoría de la traducción y extremadamente controvertido. La noción, inicialmente asociada a la mera correspondencia entre dos sistemas lingüísticos y, en ocasiones, a la idea de que las traducciones transmiten el mismo significado que el original, de manera estable e independientemente de la lengua, fue especialmente criticada durante las décadas de los años ochenta y noventa(Kenny, [1998] 2009). Con la influencia del posestructuralismo el significado comenzó a concebirse como inherentemente inestable, extremadamente subjetivo y dependiente del contexto, con lo cual no era pasible de ser replicado en otra lengua. Los estudios de traducción pronto adoptaron una concepción de equivalencia como una relación entre dos textos en distintas lenguas (equivalencia intertextual) y no entre dos lenguas (equivalencia interlingüe), lo cual convirtió a la traducción en una tarea más asequible y realista.
