Resumen: This paper is a fieldwork study framed in the community interpreting branch of Translation and Interpreting Studies, a current dealing with mediated interactions in Public Services. In accordance with the scope of this discipline, the following pages focus on highlighting the importance of pragmatic theories in an interlinguistic, triangular communication occurring within mental health consultations. The fundamental idea is to combine some of the most relevant pragmatic principles in order to establish an ideal communicative frame we can subsequently contrast with the reality of interlinguistic interactions in mental health settings. In consequence, the first part of the paper seeks to portray the importance of Pragmalinguistics in this context by providing a theoretical frame which is also used as the base for formulating certain questions that arise due to its implications for the interpreting process. These issues are the pillars for two brief questionnaires: the first one is addressed both to novice and experienced interpreters whereas the second set of questions was distributed among mental health professionals. The analysis of the survey results seeks to achieve three main objectives: i) to determine agreement and disagreement points between both parties; ii) to combine their opinions with the aforementioned theoretical bases in order to establish certain guidelines and solutions that may improve communication; iii) to define the interpreter's role within our field of study.

Resumen: En este artículo se presenta un análisis sobre la naturaleza y evolución de las tesis doctorales que abordan los estudios traducción e interpretación (ETI) en España. Con una metodología mixta, esencialmente cuantitativa pero también cualitativa en el apartado interpretativo, se lleva a cabo un repaso crítico de la producción doctoral sobre los ETI en España, contextualizándola en los ETI globales. Los principales indicadores estudiados son el diacrónico, la productividad por universidades, la extensión, las lenguas vehiculares, el tipo de acceso a las tesis, la distribución temática y el impacto causado por las tesis. La principal fuente de datos es BITRA (Bibliografía de Interpretación y Traducción), una base de datos de ETI holística que a fecha de agosto de 2019 recogía más de 77.000 entradas. Entre los resultados cabe destacar una intensa productividad de tesis doctorales españolas en ETI, que se sitúan a la cabeza de la disciplina en el mundo, una distribución abierta de la lengua vehicular y su publicación casi sistemática en acceso abierto en la actualidad.

Resumen: The study surveys the existing literature on strategies in simultaneous interpreting (understood here as transformations indicative of interpreting procedures that manifest in the product of interpreting). On the basis of the survey, a summary of eight strategies which are present in various research strands is compiled. I use a parallel bidirectional corpus of Ru-En simultaneous interpreting to extract a random sample of 360 fragments and investigate the presence of the eight strategies in the sample. The type of strategy is then correlated with three variables: direction of interpreting, position of the source fragment in the original text, and phraseological richness of the source fragment. The findings indicate that all the strategies, including an additional transformation category (incorrect interpretations), are present in the sample, although some of them are considerably less common than earlier literature purports. All three variables have significant association with the type of strategy, although in cases of directionality this holds only for saucissonnage and omission. A close analysis of three coding categories—omission, explicitation, and incorrect interpretations—suggests that interpreters in this corpus orient more towards a performative than informative function of their SI.

Resumen: Over the past ten years Community Interpreting research has become a flourishing field of study with a great number of contributions being published every year. Books, articles, papers and presentations may vary in their topics-some of them being very general and some of them much more specific-and this diversity has been the source of our motivation to draw what could be regarded as a map of the main research topics in Community Interpreting. Thus, based on a literature review and inspired by Williams & Chesterman's (2002) map for Translation Studies, this paper proposes a specific map for Community Interpreting research, while also attempting to summarize the main contributions. It does not intend to provide an exhaustive revision, but an overview that reflects the state of the art in Community Interpreting as a basis for future research. It finally states that research topics are not isolated, but tightly interconnected as different steps in the path towards professionalization, as can be seen in the conceptual map suggested at the end of this paper.

Resumen: La calidad de la interpretación es quizás uno de los temas más estudiados en el campo de la interpretación de conferencias. Los dos principales enfoques que han sido utilizados para evaluar la calidad han sido: por un lado, la percepción de los usuarios y por el otro la comparación analítica del mensaje original con el mensaje traducido (Reithofer, 2013). A pesar de que algunos estudios han investigado los diferentes factores que pueden afectar el rendimiento del intérprete (ver por ejemplo Pöchhacker, 1994; Cooper et al. 1982; van Besien & Meuleman, 2004), hasta el momento no se ha examinado el grado en que los usuarios/oradores perciben el impacto directo que ellos mismos pueden tener en el rendimiento del intéprete, y la responsabilidad que comparten respecto de la calidad de la interpretación. El presente estudio intenta en moderada medida cerrar esa brecha en el conocimiento en cuanto a la relación entre la calidad de la interpretación y la responsabilidad de los oradores, por medio de la investigación de: (a) el conocimiento de un grupo de delegados sobre las necesidades del intérprete a la hora de interpretar y el grado de conciencia sobre su influencia directa en la calidad de la interpretación, y (b) las opiniones de un grupo de intérpretes respecto de cómo son percibidos por los mismos delegados, en las reuniones anuales de la Comisión para la Conservación de Recursos Vivos Marinos (CCRVMA).

Resumen: El retraso en la investigación en interpretación ha sido causado durante años por la falta de una metodología adecuada, falta de paradigmas aceptados y falta de unificación en los enfoques investigadores. Tras una breve exposición de los estudios realizados hasta el momento el artículo se centra en la metodología de la investigación empírica aplicada a la interpretación. Los distintos métodos cualitativos y cuantitativos ofrecen una serie de limitaciones respecto a la validez de los resultados investigadores. Estas limitaciones se pueden superar mediante un adecuado planteamiento metodológico y diseño de la investigación.

Resumen: Given the lack of sensitization to the multi-dimensional concept of quality, and given the versatility of the concept of relevance, the present investigation attempts to examine the premise that Relevance Theory (RT) can function as a standard or a benchmark for maximizing and/or optimizing quality in CI. Whilst the theoretical part relies heavily on Ernst-August Gutt's seminal work Translation and Relevance: Cognition and Context (2000), the practical part draws on some empirical data obtained from trainee-interpreters' recorded sessions at the Hashemite University (Jordan) in order to provide a relevance-driven account for some semantic, syntactic, and cultural difficulties and problems in CI. The study arrives at the main conclusion that the degree of quality in CI largely depends on the degree of relevance achieved by the interpreter's TL version, i.e., quality in CI would rise exponentially with the degree of relevance achieved by the interpreter's TL version. The study also concludes that the pragmatic RT can be considered a reliable instrument, a reliable frame of reference, or a reliable screening system that can ensure both relevance-building and a correspondingly concomitant quality-building in CI, i.e., RT can possibly fine-tune the interpreters' performance in the booth.

Resumen: The term strategy is increasingly mentioned in the interpreting literature. Individual strategies have been approached from various perspectives by a number of interpreting research scholars. Those strategies are used by interpreters to cope with cognitive constraints, interpreting mode-specific difficulties, and language- and culture-specific constraints. Given its importance, the author argues to include strategy training in interpreter education based on a synthesis of evidence from the current literature. This article firstly presents a state-of-theart review of research on the defining features of strategies and their varieties. It then validates the contribution of strategy training to interpreter education in terms of overcoming cognitive constraints, combating interpreting mode-specific constraints, coping with language- and culture-specific constraints, conforming to interpreting norms, revealing problem-solution relations in the interpreting process, highlighting novice-expert differences for pedagogical use, and leading to interpreter competence development. The article also provides a brief demonstration of how to teach strategies to trainees. Hopefully, this article can inspire interpreter trainers to recognize the importance of strategies and include strategy training in their teaching.

El elemento central del artículo, no obstante, será estudiar mediante una encuesta cual es percepción que los estudiantes tienen del curso que siguieron. Solo de este modo sabremos si cumplimos al menos uno de nuestros objetivos pedagógicos de una forma eficaz para desarrollar las destrezas de nuestros futuros intérpretes: el de que entiendan la complejidad que rodea el mundo de la interpretación de lenguas y multiplicidad de variables que intervienen en la consecución de un trabajo de calidad.

Resumen: This article seeks to describe the current scenario of parliamentary interpreting in Malaysia by studying the interpreters' work nature, aptitude and qualifications as well as remuneration and promotional opportunity. It also highlights the important aspects of the profession such as job mystification, training and continuing education, the connection between the training centres and the professional environment, the need to educate the public through the establishment of professional associations, and the implementation of an ethics code as well as the sense of professionalism among the interpreters. The author also proposes ways to improve the situation which would contribute to the professionalisation of interpreting in the Malaysian Parliament particularly and in Malaysia in general.

Resumen: By examining the types and frequencies of non-renditions in a 100-hour corpus of court interpreting records from Hong Kong, this study demonstrated that court interpreters actively coordinate communication when carrying out their interpreting duties. Non-renditions are interpreters' utterances that do not have a corresponding counterpart in the source language, and such renditions are ordinarily used to coordinate interpreter-mediated exchanges. This analysis revealed that in the Hong Kong court setting, non-renditions were less common in English (the court language) than in Cantonese (the main language of the witnesses and defendants). In the Cantonese subsample, interactional non-renditions were more common than textual non-renditions, and most of these utterances were self-initiated rather than prompted by others. In the English subsample, textual non-renditions were more common than interactional non-renditions, and most of them were other-prompted. The skewed distribution of non-renditions, and particularly the tendency to address non-renditions to the lay participants, suggests that court interpreters may not be absolutely impartial.

Resumen: The objective of this research is to develop a model of consecutive interpretation that can cope with a number of linguistic, pragmatic, stylistic, thematic, discourse and communicative problems a conference interpreter encounters while interpreting from English into Arabic or vice versa. A linguistic corpus of one hundred page English speeches delivered at the United Nation General Assembly sessions and interpreted into Arabic is analysed. The proposed model caters for both the SL and TL communicative contexts and views the conference interpreter as a mediator who decodes the original message and encodes it appropriately. The model is tested against the collected sample of linguistic data. It has proved to be capable of identifying inconsistencies and inaccuracies in five major areas: textual, stylistic, lexical, collocation and structural; the percentage of each is statistically calculated.

Resumen: Se puede observar que muchos intérpretes tienen la costumbre de gesticular durante la interpretación simultánea, aunque estén conscientes de que su público sólo los puede escuchar y no ver. Los gestos más bien constituyen un apoyo para el mismo intérprete, como por ejemplo cuando necesita recuperar una palabra de la memoria o explicarse el contenido a sí mismo. El objetivo general de esta investigación es aclarar algunas de las funciones de los gestos y comprobar si cierto tipo de gesto se presenta en momentos particulares.

Resumen: Utilisée pour la première fois dans un contexte professionnel en 1999, l’interprétation consécutive-simultanée – mode hybride qui consiste, dans le cadre d’une consécutive, à enregistrer un discours à l’aide d’un appareil numérique et à l’interpréter simultanément à partir de l’enregistrement – n’a cessé d’intriguer chercheurs, formateurs et interprètes professionnels. Au cours des vingt dernières années, un certain nombre de travaux de recherche ont été menés afin de mesurer sa viabilité. Des formateurs ont exploré ses caractéristiques sous l’angle pédagogique, soit pour proposer une alternative à la consécutive traditionnelle, soit pour échelonner l’acquisition des compétences d’interprétation différemment. Plusieurs essais visant à étendre son utilisation parmi les professionnels ont été réalisés à l’aide de différents types d’enregistreurs numériques.
