Resumen: Translating picture books is a many-splendored thing: it includes not only the relationship between the verbal and the visual (images and other elements) but also issues like reading aloud and child images. In the following, while mainly concentrating on the visual, I will deal with the other questions as well, as they all interact and influence each other. My starting point is translating as rewriting for target-language audiences - we always need to ask the crucial question: "For whom?" Hence, while writing children's books is writing for children, translating children's literature is translating for children. (See Hunt 1990:1, 60-64 and Oittinen 2000.) Resumen: Durante años se sostuvo que el traductor debía ser "invisible", y que una buena traducción debía sonar natural y no contener errores de sentido para que el lector no se percatase de que en realidad se trataba de una traducción y no de un texto original. Los profesores de traducción enseñamos a nuestros alumnos qué cosas tornan visible al traductor y cómo pueden arruinar el resultado de su tarea. Esta presentación tratará algunos errores que llevan a que el traductor pierda su invisibilidad. Pero también tratará el concepto contrario, el de la visibilidad del traductor. En la actualidad, muchos sostienen que el traductor debe ser visible. Ese concepto, más moderno que el opuesto, controvertido y a veces relacionado con ciertas corrientes relativamente nuevas como la traducción según el género (o gender translation), puede convertirse en un arma de doble filo, ya que puede resultar muy positivo (como en el caso de la defensa de los derechos de autor) o sumamente negativo (como sucede con los excesos de notas al pie de página, por ejemplo).

Resumen: En este trabajo hemos podido observar algunas de las ventajas del uso de la composición en COU. La traducción debe ser considerada como un elemento muy positivo para el éxito de los alumnos en este curso (Learners' needs). No cabe duda, de que esta herramienta favorece la capacidad de estructuración y síntesis de todos los alumnos pero muy especialmente de aquellos cuyo nivel haría muy difícil una buena nota de selectividad por su escaso conocimiento global de la lengua inglesa. Cou, como la mayoría de los cursos de inglés con fines específicos, se basa en la obtención de unos resultados determinados adecuados a las necesidades de los alumnos.

Resumen: Broadly historical in its approach, this article explores how the Xiaoxue (Lesser or Elementary Learning), or Sohak in Korean, a primary textbook for Confucianism in China, was translated into Korean at two different times with a span of seventy years between the versions in the sixteenth century. It argues that the two different versions of translation of the same book, Beonyeok Sohak and Sohak Eonhae, reflected not only significant differences in the principles and strategies of translation: free translation or literal translation and native words or foreign words, among other things; but they also revealed significant difference in the translators' - or, for that matter, their commissioners' - ideologies and worldviews. The two Korean versions of the Xiaoxue was thus a contested battleground for the scholars and the politicians. In sum, it claims that the debate on the methodology of translation is not just an issue specific to Western translation theory but also non-Western translation theory.

Resumen: This article aims to describe how written translations of audiovisual products change along the dubbing process until they reach the audience, focusing mainly on the synchronisation stage. The corpus is made up of the first reel of the Catalan and Spanish translations of three different films released in 2006 (Casino Royale, Good night, and good luck, and The Da Vinci Code). After a brief summary of the dubbing process and a short overview of the approaches to synchronisation found in the literature, the specific strategies found in a bottom-up analysis are highlighted, offering both a wide analysis of the general changes throughout the process and a closer analysis of the specific changes that occur in the synchronisation stage. A comparison of the strategies found in Catalan and Spanish is also included in order to assess whether different languages result in different strategies.

Resumen: This paper explores the translation procedures used by english translators when they tackle chinese empty words. To begin with an empty words list produced by Wang (1999) was adopted as the reference. Following this, suitable translations in the first sicty three issues of renditions were collectes and their corresponding source texts obtained from either the internet of libraries. Eventually, sixty two englisch texts and sicty two of their source texts were compiled into a parallel corpus on ParaConc.Afterwards, examples extracted from this corpus were analysed and classfied into different procedure categories on the basis of former scholars' definitions and my own ideas. Finally, eight translation procedures were identified, they are: match, paraphrase, shared match, implicitation, amplification, grammatical vonveyance, borrowing adn omission.

Resumen: It is frequently said that humor does not travel well, and wordplay, which is inseparably connected to humor, poses particular problems for the translator as it is intrinsically linked to the source language and culture, and consequently is often described as untranslatable. The translator's task is further complicated when instances of wordplay are encountered in audiovisual texts due to the constrained and semiotic nature of the medium. The aim of this paper is to examine the translation strategies applied to wordplay in the English subtitles of the French film Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis [Boon 2008]. To do this, instances of wordplay in the source text and the target text were classified according to the typology of wordplay as proposed by Delabastita (1996), and subsequently analyzed using the General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH) (Attardo and Raskin 1991) in order to contrast the differences between source text and target text instances of wordplay. The findings show the trends in the application of translation strategies and demonstrate that GTVH, albeit with some modifications, is a useful analytical tool in the context of audiovisual translation in that it could show how the puns evolved in translation and therefore give a better understanding of wordplay to aid the choice of translation strategy. As long as a narrow view of equivalence is avoided, this study demonstrates that the translation of wordplay is possible even within the polysemiotic structures of audiovisual texts.

Resumen: This paper aims to explore the strategies that translators adopt when rendering English proper nouns into Arabic and, consequently, offer both qualitative and quantitative insights into this process. It is a case study of proper nouns in professional Arabic translation based on one English novel (The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga (2008); translated into Arabic by Taiba Sadeq (2011). Proper nouns are categorized and analyzed in terms of internal syntactic structure (Central, Converted and Extended proper nouns), as well as thematically (e.g. personal names, names of institutions, bodies of water, etc.), with an eye to establishing correlations between the type of proper noun and the translation strategy opted for. The results indicate that the translator's choice between different strategies is governed by two main factors. Firstly, the translator needs to check whether the proper noun individualizes entities by means of ordinary language predicates (e.g. common nouns), proper nouns proper, or a combination of both, as each type usually requires a different strategy. Secondly, the translator needs to pay attention to the degree of comprehensibility and naturalness of his/her rendering, which may necessitate consolidating the single strategies of transliteration and translation with addition in the form of a generic word or even substitution in the case of idiomatic proper nouns. The paper concludes that proper nouns cannot be treated uniformly in translation between English and Arabic because they belong to different categories and, consequently, they may require different translation strategies including transliteration, complete translation, partial translation, transliteration plus addition, and translation plus addition.

Resumen: This article aims to examine the most frequent strategies used in translation of interjections in Persian translated versions of English dramas. The corpus consists of the odd acts of three English drama texts and the data consists of original English interjections which are compared with their Persian translational equivalents in terms of translation strategies. Resumen: Culture-bound elements, such as proper names and food items, not only place the story of a book in a specific culture and period of time, but also imply certain values and create an ambience. These elements also have an effect on how the reader identifies with the story and characters. Thus, it is important to find the most appropriate strategy to translate such elements. This paper considers the Finnish translation (1949) of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows (1908), a multi-layered and allusive children's book set in Edwardian England, and some other children's tales translated into Finnish around the same era. The translation of The Wind in the Willows dates back to a period of time when British culture was not yet well known in Finland. The paper argues that certain inconsistencies in the translation of culture-bound elements in the book make it difficult for target text readers to understand its layers of meaning and to identify with the characters. Similar inconsistencies in the translation of culture-bound elements are found in other Finnish translations of children's books from the same period. The findings may be explained by a limited knowledge of foreign cultures in post-war Finland.

Resumen: This book is about the love-hate relationship between linguistics and translation theory. Many linguists have no interest in translation theory, and some translation theorists are increasingly declaring that linguistics has nothing to offer their discipline. The author of this book does not entirely share this sceptical attitude towards linguistics; he does not see linguistics as the grand liberator or the great oppressor of translation studies; he believes rather that there are many things in translation which can only be described and explained by linguistics. Further, a translator who lacks at least a basic knowledge of linguistics is somebody who is working with an incomplete toolkit.

Resumen: The main objective of this article is to shed some light on the much-neglected area of translating gender between Persian and English. More specifically, it sets out to investigate the different strategies employed for translating the textual indicators of gender in the specified corpus of the study as well as the socio-cultural and ideological factors influencing them qualitatively. This objective is achieved through following a two-level methodology at descriptive and explanatory levels throughout the article and the following results are attained: 1) five broad categories of gender-translation strategies were identified in the corpus of the study; and 2) the aforementioned strategies were judged to be influenced by socio-cultural and ideological factors of different types.

Resumen: The expression of modal meanings is an area of great complexity in the relationship between form and function in a single language and cross-linguistically. Modal adverbs in particular are considered to be problematic from a contrastive perspective due to their multifunctionality in English (Aijmer 2005). This paper is a corpus-based study of the expression of epistemic possibility by means of three common modal adverbs in English (certainly, probably, possibly) and the translational options chosen in Spanish for expressing those meanings. The aim is to identify trends in the translations of these epistemic adverbs that contribute to a better understanding of the various semantic functions that native speakers attribute to these units. The analysis shows that the omission of modal adverbs in the translations may be considered as an indicator of the degree of grammaticalization attained by these adverbs in English. The results provide useful information not only in the field of translator training and practice, but also in descriptive linguistics.

Resumen: Translation, according to the German functional approach to Translation Studies, is a purpose-driven interaction that involves many players. Translating children's stories is no exception. Using her personal experience of translating Mr. Wolf's Hotline, a book comprising 47 Chinese children's stories by Wang Yizhen, a contemporary Chinese writer , in light of the Skopos and text-type theories of functional approach in particular, the author has outlined the strategies and methods adopted in her translations in terms of language, structure and culture. With child readers in mind during the translation process, the translator has used rhetorical devices, onomatopoeic words, modal particles, and also changed some of the sentence structures of the stories, such as from indirect sentences into direct quotations, and from declarative sentences into questions. In terms of culture, three aspects, namely, the culture-loaded images, the names of the characters and nursery rhymes are singled out for detailed analyses. Though marginalized, 'children's literature is more complex than it seems, even more complex' (Hunt 2010:?1), and translation of children's literature is definitely challenging. This paper outlines the strategies and methods the author has adopted in translating some children's stories from Chinese to English.

Resumen: German-language approaches to translation have been revolutionized by the theory of action (Handlungstheorie) and the related theory of translation's goal or purpose (Skopostheorie). Both these approaches are functionalist: they seek to liberate translators from servitude to the source text, seeing translation as a new communicative act that must be purposeful with respect to the translator's client and readership. As one of the leading figures in this field, Christiane Nord gives the first full survey of functionalist approaches in English. She explains the complexities of the theories and their terms, using simple language with numerous examples. Resumen: Certaines mesures ont été prises jusqu'à présent dans le domaine de la traduction audiovisuelle et en particulier dans la didactique de la traduction audiovisuelle. Les travaux antérieurs présentent un intérêt considérable et ont servi de bases solides dans l'essentiel de la littérature de formation et la pratique des traducteurs dans le domaine de l'audiovisuel. En gardant ces études antérieures à l'esprit, nous abordons dans cet article la didactique de la traduction audiovisuelle, les publicités télévisées constituant la principale thématique. En partant d'un éventail de différents types de publicités télévisées, nous pouvons soulever des questions de recherche intéressantes: les fondements théoriques de la traduction audiovisuelle ; l'idéologie de la traduction audiovisuelle ; les références culturelles inhérentes aux produits audiovisuels ; les modes de traduction audiovisuelle et leur lien avec les techniques de traduction et les stratégies de résolution des problèmes de traduction ; ou encore la notion d'intraduisibilité. La traduction des publicités audiovisuelles semble être un excellent point de départ pour l'élaboration d'une méthodologie didactique traitant d'importantes questions de recherche en matière de traduction audiovisuelle ; divers problèmes linguistiques et culturels suscitent le débat et tous peuvent être extrapolés à la traduction d'autres types de textes audiovisuels.
