Und gleichwie bei der normalen Erforschung der Sprache kann man auch beim Übersetzen prozeßorientiert oder produktorientiert vorgehen. Die normalerweise getrennte Prozeße des Sprachverstehens und der Sprachproduktion sind beim Übersetzen verbunden und sie verteilen sich auf zwei Sprachen.

Resumen: The purpose of this proposed paper will be to show how the introduction of translation memories into the workflow-process of the translator can significantly change the working environment. This environment change will include the áreas of collaborative work, organization of the work, and finally the cognitive process of translating. Our results are based upon empirical studies made by twenty-six translators in France, Switzerland and Germany. One group, in the public sector, includes international organizations, government, and the European Union, while a second sector included private entines like insurance companies and banks. Our empirical studies were computer-generated examples, while the individual case studies result from traditional paper-based evaluations generated from sector participant response. We will compare the proposed intellectual strategies with the cognitive processes that intervene with, or impact upon, the process -with and without the use of translation memories. The work and study data were completed between early 1998 and mid-2000. This analysis pro vides for the design of a new sense of translation methodologies, which can significantly impact effective communications across our global society

Resumen: Technical difficulties associated with dubbing, together with the collaborative nature of the dubbing process, explain why traditionally the linguistic challenges of dubbing translation for specific audiences such as children have not been studied very closely. As new developments in sound recording improve the technical quality of dubbing, it is time for the remaining textual translation issues to be addressed in more detail. Due to the many common characteristics of different text types aimed at children, dubbers of children’s audiovisual material can learn a considerable amount from the translators of other texts, such as books and comics aimed at children, about the particular challenges posed by this target audience.

Resumen: Translation shifts are among the disciplines that have always been in focus. Many scholars have discussed in this regard and have proposed some models. Three main types of shifts have been paid attention to including syntactic, semantic and stylistic shifts. First models like the ones introduced by Catford and Vinay and Darbelnet mostly had tendency toward syntactic shifts. On the contrary, the later frameworks have studied semantic and stylistic shifts. Undoubtedly, Van Leuven-Zwart's framework that studies syntactic, semantic and stylistic shifts all together has been one of the most detailed ones. It has been presented to establish and describe shifts in translations of narrative texts. However, some scholars including Toury have not paid attention to this model in shift studies because of its complexities.pThis paper aims at briefly introducing Van Leuven-Zwart's framework and speaking about its strengths and drawbacks, respectively, in order that researchers and students get more familiar with this influential model. It also gives some suggestions for further researches.

Resumen: This article is dedicated to the issue of the adequacy of self-translations of Vladimir Nabokov's small forms of fiction. Different types of transformations of short-story titles in the creative work of the bilingual writer were chosen as the object of the research. The article is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach, uniting aspects of linguistic, literary and cultural studies in the investigation of the self-translation phenomenon, an approach that provides for scientifically-grounded conclusions. The authors of the paper build a typology of structural and semantic changes reflecting the features of Nabokov's interpretations of his own texts. Contrastive comparative, structural, intertextual and cognitive methods were employed as the main research methods. This complex approach to text analysis used in the paper permits an expansion of the idea of the semantics and poetics of separate texts as well as a collection of stories as a whole. The authors pay special attention to investigation of the following types of correlation between the original title and its equivalent: semantic specification, semantic narrowing, semantic broadening and modulation. The authors note that Nabokov in many cases does not follow his own principles of "literality". The specializing character of correlation between the original text and the translation is predetermined by the author's aspiration to convey the exact sense and to emphasize separate connotative shades of meaning, while devices of modulation and semantic broadening perform the function of an author's comment.

Resumen: This article is in part a review of the literary qualities of the narrative tales written by the Swedish children's author Astrid Lindgren and in part a comparative reading of the Swedish Mio, min Mio (Mio, my son) and its Danish translation from 1955. It will be shown how the Danish version has been adapted from the Swedish and how as a result the Danish version of the narrative does not have the same literary quality as the original.

Resumen: In this paper it is asserted that, despite recent movements in continental translation theory (see Wilss 1982 : 59, for an admirable summary of the situation), the essential orientation of translation theory, in the English-speaking world in particular, is still towards the evaluation of translation as product (i.e. as the translated text) and, by means of such evaluation, towards the discovery or creation of a set of normative maxims for the production of the ideal translation.What is proposed is a shift of focus away from the translation as an artifact - a product - towards translating as process i. e. an investigation of the psycholinguistic mechanisms of decoding and encoding in the context of bi- rather than monolingual information exchange. The paper concludes with some tentative hints at parts of the decoding elements of a model of translating which, it is hoped, will help to orient translators and teachers towards the means by which texts are transferred from language to language and from speech community to speech community ; a process which is universally recognized as a sine qua non for the improvement of international relations in a sadly divided world.

Resumen: This paper explores the translation procedures used by english translators when they tackle chinese empty words. To begin with an empty words list produced by Wang (1999) was adopted as the reference. Following this, suitable translations in the first sicty three issues of renditions were collectes and their corresponding source texts obtained from either the internet of libraries. Eventually, sixty two englisch texts and sicty two of their source texts were compiled into a parallel corpus on ParaConc.Afterwards, examples extracted from this corpus were analysed and classfied into different procedure categories on the basis of former scholars' definitions and my own ideas. Finally, eight translation procedures were identified, they are: match, paraphrase, shared match, implicitation, amplification, grammatical vonveyance, borrowing adn omission.

Resumen: This article provides evidence for the applicability of free translation to legal texts, based on an examination of actual cases of Japanese-to-English translation of agreements and contracts in which problems arise from literal translation. The data analysis shows that pitfalls associated with literal translation are attributable to not only the difficulty of finding terminological equivalents that inevitably arises from the differences in the Japanese and American legal and cultural systems, but also to the importance of preserving the spirit of mutual trust and cooperation that is found in Japanese business transactions. It is also postulated that general linguistic and interpretive problems inherent in Japanese-to-English translation of nontechnical texts, including redundancy, ambiguity, propensity for nonspecific statements, and the lack of linguistic clues (e.g., indicators of number), have fundamental, but not well understood, implications for legal translation. The conclusions indicate the need for an integrated approach to legal translation practice that uses both literal and free translations, taking into full account the linguistic, cultural, and legal factors at work in the translation process.

Resumen: The article takes a look at the translation of children's literature intended for reading aloud. The pragmatic (or theoretical) point of departure is a 'narrative contract' between the child (audience) and the reader as in the oral tradition of yesteryear. It is therefore argued that, at least initially, children's literature for reading aloud was a continuation of the narrative tradition in the extended family adapted to the conditions and mores of the nuclear family. The nuclear family was a 19th century innovation promoted by the new middle classes, and they best carried on the narrative tradition by means of stories such as those of the brothers Grimm in Germany and Hans Christian Andersen in Denmark. Referring to an informal questionnaire among Translation Studies scholars covering eleven countries, it is concluded that the tradition of reading aloud for children is alive and well. This leads to a model for the translational situation for read-aloud literature that calls for guiding principles in the exploration of differences between 'originals' and 'translations.' Having introduced such layers, viz. the structural, the linguistic, the content and intentional ones, a paratextual and chronological layer are also called for, because of the ubiquity of modern co-prints and the need to introduce diachronic perspectives. The article discusses decision-makers in the process of translation, such as publishers and the like, and also briefly views questions of translational traditions before it discusses translations of the Grimm Tales into English and Danish, to conclude that there are two different schools of 'respectable translators,' one targeting stories for reading aloud and another for silent reading, even though the translators may not be aware of this. The final part takes up questions concerning the translation of names, rhymes, and a highly complex text which is discussed in depth. The conclusion is that translation for reading aloud is an art requiring great competence of translators. It also ought to attract more attention from Translation Studies scholars because it questions fundamentals in translation work that are also found in other types of translation.

Resumen: Translation as a profession provides an in-depth analysis of the translating profession and the translation industry. The book starts with a presentation of the diversity of translations and an overview of the translation-localisation process. The second section describes the translation profession and the translators markets. The third section considers the process of becoming a translator, from the moment people find out whether they have the required qualities to the moment when they set up shop or find a job, with special emphasis on how to find and hold on to clients, avoiding basic mistakes. The fourth section concentrates on the vital professional issues of costs, rates, deadlines, time to market, productivity, ethics, standards, qualification, certification, and professional recognition. Resumen: The translation of song lyrics shares in the difficulties of constrained translation, as well as in the impossibilities of poetic translation. In Gilberto Gil's adaptation of the song "I just called to say I love you" by Stevie Wonder, two translation procedures stand out: (1) to take broad semantic fields as translation units, and (2) to opt for cultural adaptation in terms of the translation's poles of domesticating/foreignizing. The way Gil faces up to the challenges of the translation of the song is consistent with Haroldo de Campos ideas on transcreation.

Resumen: This study used the thinking-aloud method to investigate the working processes of translating an expository from english to Chinese. Five translation students and five translation expert participated in this study. They were asked to translate a paragraph of expository text in a published book and verbalized their thoughts while translating the text from English into Chinese. This paper reports and discusses some results af the in-progress date analysis of the study. After studying the cognitive moves present in the expert and the novice translating processes, differences were found between the students and the experts in terms of outside resourses, negotation of competing pressures, etc. The study is significant in identifying the key elements and strategies that characterize expert working processes, which in turn will shed lights on translator and teaching. This study in another step forward from my previous study of investigating the cognitive processes of translating. The reason for adding this dimension of expert vs. novice comparison is primarily pedagogical. If differences were indeed found between experts and novices, such information could be used to develop pedagogical tools for translation students. In this way, the experts can set a model for the students not only in what they can produce in translation but also how they have produced such translation. In other words, it can provide a source for cognitive apprenticeship, which may affect students beyond the limits of the conventional teaching method of having students study "good" translated texts. Second, by looking al how experts and students might use certain skiils diferently, it is possible to identify some feautures that exclusively characterize experts and that may be teachable but not yet taught explicitly to students. In short, the expert-novice comparision would have much to offer to translation instruction in terms of both what to teach and how to teach.

Resumen: This paper proposes a model for translating English perfect tenses into Arabic based on a comparative study of two translations of Pearl Buck's novel The Good Earth. It starts with a brief introduction to tense and aspect in English and Arabic. Then it explains the study aim and technique. After that, it presents an analysis of the study results by discussing the different renderings of the English perfect tenses in the two target texts.

Resumen: En el contexto científico-técnico la traducción desempeña un papel muy significativo. En el nuevo milenio el desarrollo de la ciencia y la técnica y el creciente número de especialistas dedicados a las investigaciones científicas lleva a un auge cada vez mayor de publicaciones científico-técnicas en inglés; lo que impone la necesidad de logara traducciones adecuadas que impulsen la comunicación y garanticen el desarrollo científico-técnico. Para evitar las consecuencias nefastas y las secuelas que una mala traducción puede ocasionar con respecto a la exactitud informativa requerida en el contexto científico-técnico resulta imperativo detectar los problemas traduccionales que aparecen en este discurso y que pueden convertirse en frenos comunicativos o en elementos desorientadores que pueden acarrear complicaciones o confusiones muy dañinas para el desarrollo del progreso de la ciencia y la técnica.

Um ponto muito forte do livro é seu elemento didático. Embora a teoria seja apresentada, nunca se torna um livro exclusivamente teórico, e os pontos såo sempre apresentados por meio de exemplos e atividades.

Resumen: La traducción técnica, a pesar de contarse entre las más prolíficas, es paradójicamente una de las menos sometidas a estudio. Con todo, la literatura sobre traducción técnica ha ido en aumento en los últimos años. Sin embargo, el término "traducción técnica" engloba tal cantidad de temas, formatos y registros que, como dice Newmark en su Manual de traducción, es una tarea ardua generalizar acerca de este tipo de traducción, es decir, lo que puede ser válido para un informe técnico puede no serlo para un manual, unas instrucciones o un letrero. Si bien es verdad que no son muchos los estudiosos de la traducción que dedican sus desvelos a la traducción técnica, resulta aún más difícil encontrar a quien se ocupe, no ya de la traducción técnica como modalidad de traducción o como resultado de un proceso, sino del traductor técnico.

Resumen: Voluptuous Pleasure: The Truth about the Writing Life de Marianne Apostolides se compose de neuf histoires « vraies », inspirées de la vie d'Apostolides et de sa famille : l'action se situe entre la réalité et la fiction. Ce livre, tout en racontant des histoires, remet en question l'acte d'écrire et le concept d'histoire lui-même. Le fil conducteur est le rapport au père de l'auteure et à sa terre natale, la Grèce. Sur le plan traductif, les dialogues occupent une place essentielle. C'est en effet grâce au naturel et à l'authenticité des paroles rapportées (inventées?) par Apostolides que l'on saisit la personnalité et la profondeur des personnages. Dans cet article, j'aborderai mon processus de traduction de ce livre pour les éditions La Peuplade en m'attardant à la nouvelle Two Dialogues: On Bravery. Puisant dans les cadres théoriques et méthodologiques de la recherche-création, je propose de retracer mon processus de recréation des dialogues en analysant plusieurs versions françaises produites au cours de l'été 2014. J'observerai l'évolution de mon postulat traductif en décrivant et en catégorisant les stratégies adoptées en cours de traduction, puis en les contrastant avec celles qui ont été privilégiées dans la version finale

Resumen: La notion de langue-culture est intégrée à la réflexion traductologique depuis plus de vingt ans. Ainsi est-il admis que toute étude des productions langagières interlinguistiques comporte une dimension interculturelle. Le présent développement propose une exploration des objets intraduisibles du fait de leur ancrage dans une culture donnée, et suggère des procédures de résolution. L'opération traduisante relève alors de la négociation. Le traducteur, intermédiateur dans la chaîne de communication interlinguistique, recherche un compromis et met en oeuvre une stratégie de négociation allant de l'emprunt à l'adaptation, voire la transposition. Or, l'exploitation d'exemples extraits de discours authentiques montre que les objets considérés intraduisibles et qui, par conséquent, peuvent être transférés non traduits dans la langue d'arrivée - emprunts et xénismes - constituent en réalité des traductions en raison du glissement sémantique qui accompagne systématiquement leur réception et leur intégration dans la culture d'accueil.

Resumen: Este trabajo presenta los préstamos del inglés con sus características dentro de esta variedad lingüística en el ámbito específico de las empresas de la industria petroquímica en Bahía Blanca, en lo que constituye una "jerga profesional" y discute las dificultades surgidas en la práctica y las alternativas para el traductor en el desempeño de su tarea.

Resumen: La consideración descriptiva del papel desempeñado por el traductor en cualquier hecho dado de traducción no puede en realidaddesligarse de los demás aspectos (el cliente, traducciones anteriores, etc.) a través de los cuales podemos afrontar el estudio de las traducciones. De ahí que este trabajo proponga, como medida previa metodológica, una visión completa de la descripción de traducciones a modo de trasfondo y que puede o destacarse en su totalidad o dejarse parcialmente en sombras a la hora de realizar un estudio concreto.

Resumen: The reading of scientific articles reveals that references to non-scientific cultural elements are numerous in this type of texts, particularly in those published in scientific magazines. Indeed, the integration of new knowedge into existing one is only possible if the reader is able to relate new elements to his or her cultural background or daily experiences: comparisons, examples and metaphors play an important role in this process. Although some of these elements can be automatically transferred when translating into another language, others would hardly be "interpretable" by the reader of the translation, and the translator has to apply mechanisms of adaptation. In this article, my intention is to examine the different mechanisms of adaptation used in a corpus of texts published in American magazines and translated into French, to analyse.the characteristics of the segments which have been adapted and to identify the criteria that might guide the translator in bis or her choices.
