Resumen: Cognitive understandings of metaphor have led to significant advances in understandings of how to translate metaphor. Theoretical accounts of metaphor not as a figure of speech but as a mode of thought, have provided useful tools for analysis and for translation work. This has usually happened at the level of individual metaphorical expressions, while the deeper lesson of cognitive theories has not been taken to heart by translation scholars, with a few signal exceptions. In this article we explore the potential of Conceptual Metaphor Theory for translating related metaphorical expressions within a specific text. We propose a model for understanding metaphor translation that takes as its unit of analysis not the individual metaphorical expression but the conceptual metaphor, of which the metaphorical expression is but a particular instantiation. It is this theoretical grounding that will allow us to propose a model for translating developed metaphors and related metaphorical expressions.

Resumen: La función de la metáfora como medio de expresión de conceptos abstractos ha sido ampliamente discutida en la literatura. Sin embargo, se necesita profundizar en los aspectos lingüísticos y cognitivos que implica este fenómeno. En este artículo tratamos de profundizar en la descripción y el análisis de los procesos de metaforización en un campo de especialidad, desde las implicaciones que la metáfora tiene para la traducción especializada. Para ello, nos centramos en el análisis de una metáfora que desempeña una función central en un área de especialidad. Partiendo de los datos observados en un corpus comparable inglés-español, se analizan los procesos de metaforización y lexicalización desde un enfoque cognitivo y social.

Resumen: This empirical-experimental study focuses on the processing of metaphorical expressions in sight translation (STR), a particular branch of interpreting. In order to test whether linguistic metaphors pose cognitive challenges for sight translators, we designed a within-subject experiment with 30 undergraduate taking an intermediate-level interpreting course at a Chinese university. Three streams of data, namely processing times, translation quality assessments, questionnaires and retrospective interviews, were collected and analysed for triangulation purposes.pThe results showed that metaphorical expressions took more time to process, and their presence resulted in more translation failures. In other words, the inclusion of linguistic metaphors slowed down the speed of production and compromised the quality of translation, meaning that the STR of metaphors requires more effort than for their literal counterparts. The results also suggested that the extra effort was mainly invested in the reading phase, rather than in the production phase. The data revealed that mistranslations resulting from incomplete understanding, and the ensuing imbalance in the allocation of processing capacity between the reading and production tasks, far outnumbered those resulting from the failure to find appropriate target-language terms. By adopting STR as the vehicle for examining metaphorical expressions, this study also shed some light on how metaphors are processed in a bilingual environment.

Resumen: A pesquisa ora apresentada insere-se no Projeto "Procedimentos de tradução e tratamento do léxico soez" e tem como foco o par bilíngue espanhol-português. A pesquisa prevê, em um primeiro momento, a análise da tradução do léxico soez presente nas obras do escritor espanhol Manuel Vázquez Montalbán (Barcelona - 1939/Bancoque-2003) escritas no período de 1979 a 2003 e traduzidas para o português brasileiro no período de 2001 a 2007.

Resumen: This study aims at investigating the nature and scope of the problems that Arab learners encounter in translating English metaphorical expressions into Arabic using English-Arabic dictionaries. The strategies involved in translating English metaphors into Arabic have been identified and described. The study also aims at determining the extent to which English-Arabic dictionaries are helpful to.learners in translating English metaphors. The findings of the study reveal that learners resort to a number of strategies induding finding the idiomatic translation equivalents, literal translation, interpretation and guessing. Bilingual dictionaries have been found to be a potential source of error for learners. These dictionaries offer inadequate help to translators in terms of providing equivalents to metaphorical expressions.

Resumen: Much has been said about how ideological tendencies can influence the content of a translation and the Spanish version of Prescott's work History of the Conquest of Mexico, with a Preliminary View of the Ancient Mexican Civilization, and the Life of the Conqueror, Hernando Cortés is a clear example of this influence. Manipulation was the strategy that the Mexican editorial promoted and it is what the translator yielded to, but not in a way that was expected. Focusing on the account of the episode of the conquest of Mexico in which Montezuma and his tragic death are prominent, this article will show how Navarro, the translator, meticulously respects the North American's portrayal of the Aztec ruler, whom he considers to be hypocritical, superstitious, lavish, weak and fainthearted. When Navarro does manipulate the description, it is principally in order to accentuate some negative trait of the Aztec leader which has already been presented in the original text or to prevent the Mexican reader from having to see in print the name of the emperor who was associated with incidents which many Mexicans might consider lamentable. At the same time, it will be clear that cognitive linguistics provides adequate theoretical support in order to be able to comprehend that both the original and translated texts highlight the idea of Montezuma as a metaphor and symbol of failure.

Resumen: La presente ponencia aborda los problemas de la traducción de la metáfora conceptual que más frecuentemente aparecen en el discurso científico. Para ello, partiremos de la definición de metáfora conceptual y trazaremos un rápido recorrido de los principales avances de los últimos años en torno de este concepto en el campo de la lingüística, de la traductología y de la terminología. Intentaremos reconocer las metáforas conceptuales y analizar las posibilidades y los límites de su traducción -del francés al español- mediante ejemplos provenientes del discurso científico.

Resumen: Meaning-Based Translation is designed for training beginning translators and organized chapter by chapter as drill material for the textbook Meaning-Based Translation. The textbook emphasizes the importance of a translation being accurate, clear and natural and the exercises give the student practice in achieving this goal. The exercises follow closely the content of the textbook since this is a drill manual for added practice. The textbook has some exercises as well, but the workbook provides additional practice from one basic source, thus giving students a wider variety of problems to solve during practice time. It also provides material that can be used as homework or as testing material.

Resumen: Se ofrece un análisis de la monografía El amor: la gran oportunidad (2011) y de su traducción al alemán Liebe: die grosse Chance (2016) del psiquiatra Enrique Rojas. Se trata de un texto híbrido en el género del ensayo y de la divulgación científica. La traductora G. Stein emplea un registro culto de calado estético, mientras que el texto original reproduce las conferencias del autor y los casos clínicos, si bien ilumina el concepto del amor con erudición y discurso digresivo. Se subraya la diferencia estilística existente entre la obra original y el texto meta. La aplicación de la metodología funcionalista de Nord resuelve el problema del tratamiento final de la traducción. Mediante un procedimiento comparatista se presentan algunas soluciones y problemas de la traducción, se identifica el rasgo retórico predominante de las metáforas del amor y otras figuras literarias, se ponderan aspectos léxicos y se indican diversos elementos culturales de interés de este concepto milenario.

Resumen: Hay numerosas razones que justifican un estudio académico tanto de la novela de Vladimir Nabokov (1955) como de su adaptación para el cine de Kubrick. Un motivo destacado es el interés que tienen estas obras por sí mismas, más allá de cualquier polémica morbosa, por su calidad y por sus cualidades. Lolita ya se considera una de las mejores novelas en lengua inglesa. Ambos artistas muestran cierta propensión a la provocación, ya sea conscientemente o no, pero si solo fuera ése el mérito no habrían podido emerger como colosos de la literatura y del cine. Los temas que abarca este trabajo son: el humor como elemento importante de ésta obra, y por extensión aspectos más generales del humor; y la importancia que tienen dichos aspectos en la investigación académica de la traducción, ilustrados en un puñado de ejemplos representativos.

Resumen: El traductor debe ser consciente de que es el lazo entre los programas y su público meta. Debe conocer a fondo a ese público (los niños, jóvenes y adultos que miran televisión con ellos) para tratar de que la experiencia sea la mejor para todos, teniendo en cuenta las distintas edades, las cosas y personas que cada grupo etario conoce, manteniendo el humor del original. Y su "saber enciclopédico" debe abarcar también a todos los grupos etarios involucrados. Se podría decir que la traducción de material audiovisual para niños y jóvenes es una traducción técnica en múltiples sentidos: no solo por las restricciones comunes a toda traducción audiovisual sino también por todo lo que hemos mencionado. Un traductor técnico sabe sobre el tema y conoce la jerga pertinente. En este caso sucede lo mismo. Y finalmente, uno de los aspectos más importantes de la tarea de traducir para niños: los traductores somos para ellos "formadores de vocabulario". Si restrinjo la riqueza de la traducción al español y elimino toda referencia cultural aunque se pueda mantener o explicar, estoy reduciendo las posibilidades de que el público meta aprenda un español más variado y conozca distintas realidades culturales. En síntesis, estaré reduciendo su vocabulario, sus conocimientos, y su mundo.

Resumen: El reconocimiento internacional alcanzado por la literatura aborigen australiana ha suscitado el interés de diversos investigadores, quienes han identificado en esta literatura tradiciones, modos de expresión de un compromiso político y una retórica característicos. Precisamente en esta literatura, expresión de la diversidad cultural aborigen australiana, se instaura una relación sincrética entre la lengua aborigen y la lengua dominante, el inglés, que da cuenta de una construcción identitaria discursiva que resulta relevante para la traducción. El concepto de equivalencia ha sido central para la teoría de la traducción y extremadamente controvertido. La noción, inicialmente asociada a la mera correspondencia entre dos sistemas lingüísticos y, en ocasiones, a la idea de que las traducciones transmiten el mismo significado que el original, de manera estable e independientemente de la lengua, fue especialmente criticada durante las décadas de los años ochenta y noventa(Kenny, [1998] 2009). Con la influencia del posestructuralismo el significado comenzó a concebirse como inherentemente inestable, extremadamente subjetivo y dependiente del contexto, con lo cual no era pasible de ser replicado en otra lengua. Los estudios de traducción pronto adoptaron una concepción de equivalencia como una relación entre dos textos en distintas lenguas (equivalencia intertextual) y no entre dos lenguas (equivalencia interlingüe), lo cual convirtió a la traducción en una tarea más asequible y realista.

Resumen: All living languages have the potential to coin neologisms which is indicative of their vitality to translate new knowledge and the ensuing changes in society. In economic and financial discourse, analysts, experts and popularisers often resort to figures of speech when explaining new realities in this area field, thus enabling them to have a greater impact on the recipients. The aim of this paper, based on a research corpus of texts spanning the 2007-2012 economic crisis taken from the press of four different European countries, is to attempt to resolve the difficulties involved with this kind of terminology. The questions addressed include the following: the attitude of the speakers of Romance languages towards the introduction of new concepts relating to the crisis; the field associated with each expression in the different cultures; to what extent conceptual metaphors coincide between cultures; the terminological variations involved in each case, etc. The answers to these questions can facilitate improved translator performance. The time lapse between the appearance of these terms and their inclusion in dictionaries poses a problem for translators who need to find solutions as quickly as possible, whilst at the same time providing a systematic approach to the problems encountered. Above and beyond solutions provided by dictionaries alone, translators are often faced with a choice between the terms found in vivo and those found in vitro. While an analysis of the way each concept is handled by dictionaries falls beyond the scope of our stated aims, it cannot be ignored completely inasmuch as it makes it possible to shed light on institutional terminological policies as well as divergences between the recommended standard and actual usage. At the same time, it should also be acknowledged that, despite the influx of terms within a globalised economy, there is still room for each community to maintain its own cultural specificity. Resumen: This concise study has tried to provide with a brief theoretical view at the role of the observance of Grice' Cooperative Principle in original metaphor, with the final purpose of facilitating its translation in Scientific and Technical Texts. It maintains that the translator must reflect faithfully the apparent violation of this principle in the Target Text, since it is inherent to the nature of original metaphor. We argue that this position can account for the writer's final intention and for individual and emotional factors and attitudes that may be considered in the process of disambiguations of this rhetorical figure.
