Resumen: Official translations are generally documents that serve as legally valid instruments. They include anything from certificates of birth, death or marriage through to academic transcripts or legal contracts. Roberto Mayoral deals with the very practical problems of official translating. He points out the failings of traditional theories in this field and the need for revised concepts such as the virtual document, pragmatic constraints, and risk analysis. He details aspects of the social contexts, ethical norms, translation strategies, different formats, fees, legal formulas, and ways of solving the most frequent problems. Resumen: The aim of this book is to provide an easy introduction to the understanding of Legal English. The book is in four parts. In the first and second parts, a theoretical background is provided where emphasis is place on analysing the peculiar features of this variety of ESP (English for Specific Purposes). A linguistic approach (both morphological and semantical) has been adopted, although other disciplines have also been taken into account, in particular sociolinguistics. This is so because Legal English is the jargon (despectively dismissed as «legalese») of an elite whose job is the meting out of justice. The third part deals with translation but from a theoretical point of view. By making use of (mostly) pragmatic concepts. A framework has been established to account for as many meanings in the texts as possible. The fourth section contains texts and documents, as well as introductions in most cases, illustrative of the different areas of the Law (Housing Law, Criminal Law, etc). Special care has been taken to select a wide variety of texts and documents to allow readers to enjoy an overview of Legal English at work. This section is heavily annotated. These notes provide explanations and translations into Spanish of the most difficult words, expressions and concepts.

En esta "Guía didáctica" se ofrecen soluciones a algunas de las actividades propuestas en el manual y sugerencias para la explotación de las mismas en el aula.

Resumen: Con esta obra, la autora pretende introducir al traductor en la traducción especializada inglés-español de textos jurídicos y administrativos. Su finalidad última es ayudar a los traductores, o a los aprendices de traducción, a enfrentar la traducción de textos pertenecientes al campo temático del derecho respetando las convenciones de los géneros jurídicos y aplicando las estrategias y técnicas apropiadas para cada encargo de traducción. Para conseguir este objetivo en este manual se abordan tres grandes áreas formativas: (1) la adquisición de conocimientos sobre traducción jurídica y derecho; (2) la adquisición de habilidades prácticas en documentación, uso de nuevas tecnologías y redacción y revisión de traducciones; y (3) el desarrollo de actitudes y valores éticos relacionados con la socialización profesional de los traductores jurídicos y jurados.
