Resumen: This book explores the intricacies of court interpreting through a thorough analysis of the authentic discourse of the English-speaking participants, the Spanish-speaking witnesses and the interpreters. Written by a practitioner, educator and researcher, the book presents the reader with real issues that most court interpreters face during their work and shows through the results of careful research studies that interpreter's choices can have varying degrees of influence on the triadic exchange. It aims to raise the practitioners' awareness of the significance of their choices and attempts to provide a theoretical basis for interpreters to make informed decisions rather than intuitive ones. It also suggests solutions for common problems. The book highlights the complexities of court interpreting and argues for thorough training for practicing interpreters to improve their performance as well as for better understanding of their task from the legal profession. Although the data is drawn from Spanish-English cases, the main results can be extended to any language combination. The book is written in a clear, accessible language and is aimed at practicing interpreters, students and educators of interpreting, linguists and legal professionals.

Se ha tratado de actualizar este lenguaje especializado, es decir, adaptar el inglés jurídico formal al inglés estándar para que sea más accesible. En esta cuestión existen dos posturas claramente opuestas: la de aquellos que defienden la adaptación del inglés jurídico al inglés estándar y la de aquellos que desean mantener el lenguaje especializado arcaico sin actualización porque piensan que de ese modo "existen más garantías jurídicas".

Resumen: The complex variables involved in mediating between asymmetrical legal realities explain, to a great extent, the limitations of traditional terminological resources (particularly, bilingual legal dictionaries) as working tools for legal translators. After a brief review of these limitations, a new approach to the development of terminological resources is presented that responds to the real needs of legal translators and draws on advances in Legal Translation Studies. This change of paradigm is illustrated by a terminological database designed for the English-Spanish translation of technological law, more precisely, for the localization of software license agreements (mostly from the United States) for Spain. The lexicographical work is contextualized, and the features and advantages of the proposed terminological entries are described in detail. These entries are called "translation-oriented terminological entries" (fichas traductológicas) because of their distinctive translation dimension, particularly the inclusion of comments on the acceptability of terminological options on the basis of comparative legal analysis in different translation scenarios. This aspect greatly contributes to the added value of the approach, which is intended as a model for similar applications in legal translation.

Resumen: The lay judge system was introduced in Japan in May 2009 in an attempt to promote citizen participation in legal decision making. The video has scenes involving several Japanese expressions that have proved to be hard to translate into English.

Resumen: La comparación de textos es una función muy especializada de la Oficina de Servicios Lingüísticos del Dpartamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos. La ley nacional dicta que ningún acuerdo, tratado, convenio internacional ni otro instrumento parecido redactado en idioma que no sea el inglés, puede ser firmado por ninguna entidad gubernamental estadounidense hasta que no haya pasado por la comparación de textos desempeñada por los traductores del Departamento de Estado. El resultado final de esa comparación debe ser un certificado emitido en papel membrete de nuestra oficina, rubricado por el jefe de la división de traducción, con copia archivada en la Oficina de tratados y que textualmente dice lo siguiente: "the English and Spanish texts of [Agreement X] have been compared by a qualified linguist in this Division, and have been found to have the same meaning in all substantive respects."

Resumen: The fact that there are few publications on legal translation in English makes it necesary to expand the field within the framework of translation studies. This dissertation applies a descriptive methodology to examine tree strategies employed in translating an academic legal text from US english into Argentine spanish, by focusing on the semantically complex legal concepts used in a selected TT portion. It is posited that such concepts, as embodied in legal terms, are not huts to be translated from the source into the target language but, rather, interpreted within the context of the source legal system and only then translated into the target legal system.

Resumen: Dada la demanda de trabajos de traducción destinados al público hispanohablante en los EE. UU. en lo tocante al ámbito de la salud, la traducción de documentos médico-jurídicos, como los consentimientos informados, exponen al traductor a un desafío lingüístico multidisciplinario donde no sólo se requiere el conocimiento de la terminología específica de las distintas áreas temáticas afines, sino que, además, es fundamental su familiarización con los principios, el propósito y las distintas formas de presentación de dicho material. En esta presentación, procuraré transmitir la lógica del consentimiento informado, sus componentes y resultados esperados, para que el traductor componga un cuadro mental precedente a la traducción, que le sirva como esquema para una investigación productiva y un trabajo satisfactorio y eficaz.
