Resumen: Ideology is a major issue in Translation Studies. With a case study of the Chinese translations of English news headlines concerning the South China Sea disputes on the website of www.ftchinese.com, this paper attempts to provide insights into the translation of ideologies in news in the Chinese context. In the theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis, the ideological factors underlying the disparity between the English news headlines and their Chinese translations are explored. The three-dimensional model of analysis put forward by Fairclough is modified and adopted in this paper as the basic steps of analysis: firstly, describe the differences between the original and their translations; secondly, associate them with the social reality; finally, account for those differences. In addition, to demonstrate how translators maneuvered to reach a compromise with the antagonistic ideologies which may set difficulties either for the news to win the acceptance of Chinese online readers or pass the Chinese government censorship, this paper offers an analysis of the translation strategies adopted in those Chinese translations, such as substitution, omission as well as the more subtle strategies, including changes of modality and actor. It is found that in the Chinese translations of the English news headlines, translators' priority is on producing translations suitable to target readers and censors' ideology, rather than linguistic equivalents. Therefore, translating ideology-loaded texts adds a new way to understand translation and ideological explorations in Translation Studies have great potentials.

Resumen: Part 1 of the study presents the theoretical framework on which the model is based, and surveys the various concepts of translation theory and text linguistics. Part 2 describes the role and scope of source-text analysis in the translation process and explains why the model is relevant to translation. Part 3 presents a detailed study of the extratextual and intratextual factors and their interaction in the text, using numerous examples from all areas of professional translation. Part 4 discusses the applications of the model to translator training, placing particular emphasis on the selection of material for translation classes, grading the difficulty of translation tasks, and translation quality assessment. The book concludes with the practical analysis of a number of texts and their translations, taking into account various text types and several languages (German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Dutch).

Resumen: La traducción de un texto literario escrito por un autor tan consciente del discurso como lo era Borges, requiere por parte del traductor un análisis especialmente riguroso de ese texto y de los procesos implicados en su lectura. La traducción de "Las ruinas circulares" por James Irby es una lograda versión del original centrada en el texto, aunque su decisión de no hacer una traducción centrada en el lector es contraria al propósito comunicativo perseguido por Borges en el original. Esto se pone de manifiesto gracias al uso de herramientas proporcionadas por el análisis del discurso en la realización de este ejercicio de crítica de traducción.

Resumen: The aim of this paper is to identify and analyze the strategies used to translate into English death related cultural taboos viz. death, ghost and resurrection represented in the prominent classical Chinese drama Mudan Ting. Particular reference is made to the articulation of these taboos in three seminal English versions of Mudan Ting (as Peony Pavilion) by Cyril Birch, Wang Rongpei and Zhang Guanqian, respectively. Although these translators all follow the source text closely, certain differences in their translation strategies warrant attention. Cyril Birch takes an acculturation approach to the translation of death-related material, whereas Wang Rongpei adheres to the original text and tends to use semantic translation. In contrast, Zhang Guanqian usually translates literally, infusing the English text with a "foreign" flavor. These differences are examined in light of the general propensity among translators to take an avoidance approach to death-related material. The strategies used to translate taboo subjects are found to depend on the translator's intentions, the target readership, the specific nature of the culturally loaded elements and the availability of equivalent expressions in the target language and culture.

Resumen: El volumen reúne siete artículos elaborados por reconocidos traductólogos provenientes de tres universidades de España, Alemania y Suiza. El planteamiento innovador consiste en el marco teórico y metodológico común que adoptan estos estudios, o sea, la exploración de los rasgos orales de los textos de partida (escritos en alemán, español e inglés) y la plasmación de la oralidad en función de las convenciones lingüísticas, textuales y culturales vigentes en la cultura de llegada. Los estudios investigan tanto textos literarios escritos por clásicos de la literatura (por ejemplo, una novela de Jane Austen) como la literatura contemporánea (Ingeborg Bachmann y Jurek Becker), hasta los grandes éxitos de la novela de intriga de Dan Brown y Carlos Ruiz Zafón. El enfoque también es aplicado a la sátira política de Michael Moore. Como lenguas de llegada se estudian el alemán, catalán, español, francés, inglés, italiano y portugués. El objetivo radica en comprobar la validez del marco metodológico común para toda traducción que tenga que afrontar la oralidad como uno de los elementos fundamentales del texto.

Resumen: El objetivo de este trabajo es ofrecer un breve análisis del discurso de los textos sobre macroeconomía y finanzas, donde abundan las metáforas terminológicas o de especialidad. En primera instancia, haremos una breve referencia en torno al uso de este tipo de metáforas en el discurso económico; luego, procederemos al análisis de textos informativos donde se identificarán y clasificarán las metáforas lingüísticas utilizadas de manera aislada o en la forma de colocaciones gramaticales o léxicas y, inalmente, realizaremos algunas reflexiones sobre los posibles métodos de traducción. La presentación no es más que un proceso de identificación técnica del lenguaje metafórico en el discurso de la economía. Los profesionales de la traducción e interpretación podrán utilizar los datos aportados para producir un primer acercamiento, especialmente motivador, a la traducción de textos financieros, que suele ser contemplada con aprensión, a causa de su aparente complejidad y aridez.

Resumen: This paper aims to look closely at the achievement of coherence in interpreting through the prism of metadiscourse, a set of grammatical resources instrumental in organizing a discourse, guiding the recipients towards an author/speaker's preferred interpretation while taking account of their needs and expectation. Despite a general consensus on the role of the umbrella term, opinions vary on what falls under it. Further, while the conception sets an illuminating framework for empirical endeavors to delve into the way in which meaning is negotiated and represented at discoursal level, its discussion is often confined to the analysis of written text in specific genre (e.g. academic treatise), leaving its role in oral discourse scarcely explored. In this paper, we propose an adapted taxonomy for the analysis of devices as such in interpretation and relate them to the building of coherence in interpreted events. Qualitative analysis of instances from real-life situations is then presented to show that successful communication in interpreting does not only come as a result of rendering the propositional message, but also involves a process of skillfully managing various metadiscoursal devices in reconstructing intertextual and intratextual conherences, both of which serve the same communicative goal with neither enjoying precedence over the other. The proposed taxonomy of metadiscourse may have some pedagogical and practical implications.

Resumen: El proyecto UBACyT P016 toma como objeto el diasnóstico y descripción de las falencias de comprensión lectora de los estudiantes universitarios desde las problemáticas emergentes en los cursos de comprensión lectora de textos académicos en lenguas extranjeras. Se trabaja con los idiomas francés e inglés y con las asignaturas correlativas en español de las carreras dictadas en la Facultad de Psicología de la UBA. Se aplicó un conjunto de instrumentos de indagación a partir de los cuales se determinan algunas de las principales características del iletrismo académico en lo que a la comprensión lectora se refiere.

Resumen: En The Lord of the Rings J. R. R. Tolkien propone su "tesis lingüística" acerca de la distribución de dialectos y cronolectos en Tierra Media. Para ello, recurre a su educación filosófica y provee una descripción holística de lso fenómenos de evolución lingüística y de los procesos de formación y derivación dialectales. En la traducción al castellano de la editorial Minotauro, y la única oficialmente disponible hasta el momento en todo el mundohispanohablante, la "tesis" se encuentra "silenciada". Esta ausencia impacta inevitablemente en la configuración de la poética autoral entre los consumidores de la versión castellana de la trilogía.

Resumen: This article examines the translation of an official English European Council text, namely a Commission Communication, into Greek. A critical discourse analysis-based methodology is used to probe the manipulation of ideological shifts between the English source text and its Greek translation. The analysis of both texts aims to shed light on the way culturally-approved patterns reflect and also influence society's priorities and preoccupations. The comparative analysis provides an example of how the European Union and its official working language influenced the translator's attitudes and motivations in decoding various ideological patterns. Adopting a social view of political ideologies and their associated readerships, the article discusses how discourse and ideology mediate in the translation of the English-Greek language pair. It shows how discourse reinforces ideological assumptions and how it challenges them by emphasizing that the source culture violates the very norms and values the target culture holds dear.

Resumen: El objetivo de la siguiente ponencia es evaluar la efectividad comunicativa de los resúmenes en inglés de artículos científicos escritos por hablantes nativos del español en dos revistas académicas indexadas en Colombia. Para lograrlo se seleccionaron 30 resúmenes escritos en inglés por hispanoparlantes pertenecientes a dos áreas científicas: 15 resúmenes de artículos publicados en una revista de psiquiatría y 15 de artículos en una revista de lenguaje y cultura. Se llevó a cabo un análisis de las características textuales, discursivas y terminológicas de los resúmenes, utilizando parámetros derivados de la intersección entre la lingüística textual y la terminología.

Resumen: Discourse analysis has drawn people's attention to micro levels in the discourse. This means that some subtle issues that were ignored in the past may carry with them some implicit meanings when looked at in the context. In this regard, topicality in Chinese usually indicates definiteness, whereas this definiteness is signaled by articles, pronouns in English texts. The difference between the two systems can result in problems in translation if not handled properly. Therefore it should be stressed that the management of theme-rheme structures should be dealt with much care from micro text levels, along with an interpretation of the macro intention of the text, so that the translation process should be highlighted. By incorporating the model of discourse analysis, the interaction between the original and translation can be realized.

Resumen: This paper describes an empirical contextual study of the Spanish verbs that translate 'report' carried out on an extensive corpus of medical research articles. A quantitative analysis revealed significant differences between the lexical choices made by the translators and those made by native Spanish authors. The contextual analysis showed that reporting occurs in three basic settings, namely, the institutional setting, the community and patient setting, and the research setting. In the latter, research referred to the current study (i.e., the new clinical study presented in the article), to previous research by the same authors, or to other authors' published work. Within these contexts, consideration of linguistic factors such as collocation, sentence structure and specific features of the communicative situation allows the translator to make the appropriate lexical choices for the wide range of uses of the polysemous English verb 'report.'
