Resumen: Podríamos afirmar sin temor a equivocarnos que, cuando se trata de infundir un sentido de dignidad e integridad profesional, la educación es una herramienta fundamental. Más aun, con cierto criterio humorístico, casi efectista, y parafraseando parcialmente la famosa frase de la exitosa campaña presidencial de Bill Clinton, "It's the economy, stupid", podríamos sostener a viva voz: "It's the education, stupid". Es precisamente en el terreno de la educación donde se libra la gran batalla por la formación de profesionales íntegros, conscientes de la importancia de su labor, o, por el contrario, de engranajes despersonalizados de un sistema de desvalorización. Y el rol del docente es determinante en la formación de estos profesionales, en un sentido o el otro. Como anticipamos, este trabajo parte de la premisa fundamental de qué es la educación, especialmente aquella que se imparte desde los claustros universitarios, el medio más idóneo para lograr una verdadera jerarquización profesional -tantas veces declamada y tan pocas veces defendida en los hechos- de los mediadores lingüísticos, sean éstos traductores o intérpretes, en todos sus aspectos: desde aquéllos relacionados con las condiciones generales de trabajo (plazos de entrega, trato igualitario con respecto a otros profesionales, consideración de horarios de trabajo, etc.) hasta la remuneración recibida por la labor realizada.
