Otros, mas exquisitos, sostienen que cuando una palabra ha pasado al lenguaje familiar, o al popular, si acaso alguna vez fue lunfarda (tal es el caso de pibe), deja de serlo ipso facto. Y no falta tampoco quien sostenga que los limites que separan al lunfardo del arrabalero son tan imprecisos que las respectivas jurisdicciones han de quedar por siempre indefinidas. Nunca podriamos, pues, saber a ciencia cierta cuando un vocablo es lunfardo y cuando no merece ser tenido por tal. Debo aclarar que no participo de tales preciosismos. El lunfardo es, a mi entender (y consientasene una definicion lo mas prolijamente descriptiva que se me alcanza) un repertorio de terminos traidos por la inmigracion, durantela segunda mitad del siglo pasado y hasta el estallido de la primera gran guerra, y asumidos por el pueblo bajo de Buenos Aires, en cuyo discurso se mezclaban con otros de origen campesino, y quechuismos y lusismos que corrian ya en el hablar popular, conformado un lexico que circila ahora en todos los nivelessociales de las "republicas del Plata".
