Resumen: Patterns and Meanings consists of case studies which make use of corpora and concordance technology. Each case study elaborates a problem area, makes reference to both the descriptive and applied literature thus far, and then suggests ways of exploiting corpus data to shed light on the problem. Language phenomena investigated include word sense, phraseology and syntax, metaphor and creative use, text reference, idiom, and translation. Emphasis is given to information that usually cannot be found in dictionaries, grammars, language textbooks or other resources, but which the study of corpus data makes available. This work is particularly important not only for its language description insights, but also for pedagogical application. Further useful suggestions are included on setting up a medium-sized corpus on a personal computer.

Resumen: The common problems of English language structure have to be overcome by all students, and the difficulties they find are similar in all parts of the world. Regional differences can always be dealt with by the teacher, who should be aware of the particular problems of his students. The following general principles are self-evident: all students want to speak, write and read the normal accepted English of today and this can only be achieved by constante practice of existing forms, with some rational explanation of the grammatical devices employed, wherever this is possible.

Resumen: "Il concetto di errore ha subito notevoli trasformazioni nel campo della glottodidattica. Se, fino ad alcuni anni fa, si prestava attenzione soltanto agli aspetti grammaticali, negli anni recenti il fulcro si è spostato verso altri aspetti comunicativi. Ora non prevale più il criterio di correttezza assoluta bensì quello dell'appropriatezza del messaggio. (...) Ogni tipo di errore è la manifestazione di un percorso mentale che l'allievo sta seguendo o ha seguito nel suo apprendimento. L'errore quindi non è più visto come deviazione dalla norma -e conseguentemente da penalizzare- ma come mezzo del quale l'insegnante si deve avvalere per favorire l'apprendimento" Fusè (1990). Pur essendo consapevoli che gli errori si manifestano nella globalità della lingua, per esigenze pratiche abbiamo suddiviso il trattamento dell'errore sui piani morfosintattico, fonologico, lessicale e pragmaticoculturale".
