Al analizar y evaluar las soluciones traslativas propuestas por los alumnos, los docentes necesitan algún criterio fiable; cuando los alumnos les preguntan cuál de dos o más opciones es mejor no pueden limitarse a decir "bueno, depende..." Por cierto, aquellos profesores que fueron formados como traductores o han trabajado en entornos profesionales suelen saber que diferentes contextos exigen traducciones distintas; tienen una conciencia intuitiva de lo que es "funcional". Pero aún así, necesitan alguna teoría funcionalista si tienen que identificar los factores que determinan las decisiones traslativas en cada caso dado.
