Resumen: This paper deals with translated Canadian multicultural literature written for children and its reception in an intercultural education context in Spanish schools. In the first part of the paper I will introduce intercultural education. In the second part, I will examine the role of the translator working in a multicultural environment where texts are written in one language (English) in one country (Canada), then translated into another language (Spanish) and published in Spain. I will also look at the reception of these translations as well as the strategies translators should use to maintain the otherness of the original texts.

Resumen: Francisco Nieva is one of Spain's most original and innovative contemporary playwrights. Since Nieva's return to Spaim in the late sixties, his work has been given recognition denied it during his many years of self-imposed exile in France and Italy. Nieva was awarded the Principe of Asturias prize last year and his plays are now regularly perfomed in Madrid.

Resumen: In Spain, as in the rest of the non-Anglophone Western world, English-language film titles have become texts (or paratexts) of great cultural importance. The titles of the films that one may encounter in Western cinema can be considered, on the one hand ephemeral, elusive, and inconsequential. However, on the other hand, despite their clear irrelevance, film titles are considered to be the genuine contemporary cultural texts, for their continued presence in the media and for their evocative nature: an important marketing tool. Moreover, the result of what happens when film titles are translated into other languages and cultures has always intrigued the audience: this is perhaps indicative of the vast universe of translation studies. The differences between languages are palpable, not only from a linguistic point of view but also from a pragmatic, historical or cultural standpoint. In this paper, we deal with the translation of Quentin Tarantino's film titles into a number of European languages, including Spanish, Catalan, French and German. Quentin Tarantino's films are controversial, self-reflexive and have acquired a significant recognition within popular culture. Most of the typologies employed so far have revolved around the notion of 'fidelity" in the translation of film titles, and involving such strategies as literal translation, transposition, addition, etc. We wish to propose here another avenue for investigation: that of film-title translation as a complex (and globalised) rewriting phenomenon that benefits the commercial and ideological interests of the film industry.

Resumen: El presente artículo tiene una doble finalidad, de un lado, pretende mostrar las diferentes estrategias empleadas al traducir los títulos de las películas provenientes básicamente del mundo anglo-americano a la lengua española. Para ello, se han analizado algunas de las principales funciones que se observan en los títulos (referencial, expresiva y apelativa). También se examina la traducción de títulos que comprenden nombres propios de persona o lugar. La segunda parte de este trabajo se centra en una aplicación sociolingüística de este estudio, ya que a través de la administración de una encuesta se indaga sobre si una pequeña muestra de espectadores españoles de distintas generaciones entienden los títulos en inglés, entre otras cuestiones.

Resumen: The Thornbirds by Colleen McCullough narrates the story of the Cleary family, Irish immigrants in Australia, and the love that Meggie, the daughter, feels for the attractive and ambitious Catholic priest Ralph de Bricassart. By resorting to the world of emotions, McCullough wrote what became a best seller: the novel was published in the USA in 1977, reaching high reading records and being quickly translated into different languages, including Spanish. When it arrived to Spain one year later, the book controlling system that had been operative during Franco's dictatorship and which was in charge of revising all the material entering the country was then coming to its end, but the novel still had to be reviewed in order to be published.

Resumen: Esta comunicación tiene como propósito fundamental dar una visión panorámica, desde el escenario español, de aquellas obras que, originalmente escritas en inglés, se han traducido y representado y/o publicado en España en las últimas tres décadas. Para ello se ha consultado la colección El espectador y la crítica, editada a lo largo de casi treinta años por Francisco Alvaro, donde se da cuenta fiel, año por año, del acontecer teatral en nuestro país y de la reacción de la crítica. La segunda fuente principal de información ha sido el Index Translationum al que se ha recurrido para tener una visión del teatro inglés en ediciones españolas. Finalmente cabría mencionar que esta revisión del teatro inglés parte fundamentalmente de un estudio descriptivo-comparativo de las traducciones del teatro inglés en España publicadas o representadas en España en este periodo, que he llevado a cabo durante los últimos cinco años.

Resumen: This article focuses on Josep Maria de Sagarra's translations of Shakespeare's plays. It starts by offering an overview of clandestine translation under Franco's regime, it considers the social impact of later reeditions and analyzes the translation criteria employed in his translations of Shakespeare's plays: Sagarra's is a natural fictive orality meant not to be read aloud but rather to be staged, and his use of formal resources like rhythm and rhyme distinguish him from his predecessors (Magí Morera i Galícia and Cèsar August Jordana) and followers (Marià Manent). Finally, the article analyzes the reception that Sagarra's translations have had.

Resumen: The unknown, precisely because it is unknown, causes suspicion and fear. What does the lawyer feel when he faces an unknown legal institution? How does the translator react in such a case? In this article we study both the reaction of the Spanish legal community and also that of translators in Spain when facing an unknown legal institution like the trust. That enables us to realise that there is a close relationship between the attitude of the legal translator when faced with a new institution like the trust and the view taken by international private law rules as well as that of the legal community in charge of applying foreign law. Furthermore, we compare the attitude of the Spanish translators and the legal community in Spain, rather conservative, with that of other countries, like Canada, which have shown to be more open minded. Finally, we put forward translation strategies based on the calque and loan of the foreign word.

Resumen: En el presente trabajo, se estudia el género del folleto médico en el Reino Unido y España con una doble intención. Por un lado, determinar los principales rasgos de estos textos en cada país. Por otro, comprobar si en los folletos médicos traducidos del español al inglés se efectúan las modificaciones correspondientes. Esto es, si están presentes todos los rasgos propios de la cultura meta (inglesa), así como si existe influencia por parte de la cultura origen (española). Para ello, se han compilado tres corpus lingüísticos (uno de folletos médicos originales en inglés, otro de originales en español y otro de textos traducidos al inglés) con los que se ha llevado a cabo un análisis contrastivo.

Resumen: Vocabulary is often considered one of the most difficult aspects of translating legal texts, and finding reliable textual supports is often a challenge too. This study presents the results of an experiment to use, as often as possible, multilingual EU resources with versions in Spanish and English as textual supports for a large sample of vocabulary that warranted research when the author was involved in translating into English a voluminous text of judgment summaries produced by the Supreme Court of Spain. In the majority of cases it was indeed possible to find high quality translations in EUR-Lex (Access to European Law) and IATE (InterActive Terminology for Europe), signaling, on the one hand, significant legal language overlap possibilities between the EU and Spain and, on the other, great potential for employing the former's linguistic resources in the translation of the latter's legal texts. Moreover, this study analyzes the results with an eye to linking the different types of vocabulary items that were searched to the different types of textual supports they were found in, to see how different kinds of supports (a collection of texts and their translations, such as EUR-Lex, or a multilingual terminological resource, such as IATE) might pair well with different kinds of vocabulary items. In this way the study also addresses some of the different opinions surrounding using online collections of texts and their translations (i.e. multilingual corpora) vs. multilingual terminological resources.

Resumen: La práctica de la traducción, tarea común para muchos de nuestros hombres del S. XVIII, también la cultivó Alberto Lista. El maestro sevillano dominaba el francés y el italiano, llevando a cabo varias traducciones de sendos idiomas. Pero Lista sabía, además, inglés, y es de presumir que leyera las novelas de Richardson y las obras de Pope en dicha lengua. Este autor repite, en varias ocasiones, que conocía la lengua inglesa, y sabemos que tradujo, además del poema Ala sabiduría, tomado de Clarissa, y The Dunciad, de Pope - las dos obras que aquí se contemplan -, las poesías rusas de Bowring. Asimismo, hizo una reseña de Lord Holland.
