Resumen: Comparée à celle de l'Asie ou de l'Europe, l'histoire des États-Unis paraît singulièrement courte : à peine plus de quatre siècles se sont écoulés depuis la fondation de la Virginie par des colons anglais. Une charte de la Couronne leur garantissait toutes les libertés, des représentants élus et un gouvernement similaire à celui de la métropole. La Virginie a ainsi donné un modèle de gouvernement représentatif, base de la future démocratie américaine. Les colons, entrepreneurs privés, cherchent un profit individuel sans exclure pour autant la poursuite d'un intérêt national. Individualisme et modernité vont de pair dans un contexte de liberté et de développement de la colonisation. Mais ce mode d'organisation renferme également les germes des contradictions futures, celle d'une démocratie fondée sur la représentation des uns et l'exploitation des autres. Ce manuel mis à jour (qui couvre ainsi l'histoire américaine jusqu'en 2009) a été publié, avec succès, dans la collection « Premier cycle ». Le découpage chronologique adopté permet de présenter les grandes étapes de la formation des États-Unis, de restituer l'importance de la diversité du pays et de dégager les continuités. Bien sûr l'Amérique actuelle n'est plus celle des premiers colons ni celle de Tocqueville, mais il existe toujours une logique démocratique forte, un sens aigu du pragmatisme, une passion de l'égalité. Malgré les inégalités flagrantes d'une société à deux vitesses, l'Amérique reste encore le pays de la « deuxième chance », la première puissance mondiale.

Resumen: This volume presents fifteen original research papers by renowned specialists in their respective fields. A variety of research traditions are included, such as dialect geography and sociolinguistics, but also smaller sub-fields such as the study of slang and perceptual dialectology. Varieties studied include the South, the Eastern Seaboard, the Middle West, African American English, Cuban English, and others. A growing sense of unity in the discipline is reflected by recurring topics and methods across earlier boundaries between sub-disciplines. For instance, computerized data and statistical analyses are standard tools nowadays, and a few papers explicitly address the possibilities and limitations of these methods. The study of variation and change of linguistic varieties has largely replaced earlier, monolithic notions of dialect, and the question of change in dialects, the erosion of traditional speech forms under the impact of modern communication patterns and socio-economic developments, is investigated in several contributions. In general, a recent orientation towards the history and development of nonstandard varieties is reflected in the book - several papers study diffusion patterns of linguistic forms, or discuss the emergence of individual dialects or dialectal forms in a language contact framework. Altogether, the papers provide a lively illustration of and a fairly representative selection from ongoing high-quality linguistic research into American English.

Resumen: The Federalist, commonly referred to as the Federalist Papers, is a series of 85 essays written by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison between October 1787 and May 1788. The essays were published anonymously, under the pen name "Publius," in various New York state newspapers of the time. The Federalist Papers were written and published to urge New Yorkers to ratify the proposed United States Constitution, which was drafted in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787. In lobbying for adoption of the Constitution over the existing Articles of Confederation, the essays explain particular provisions of the Constitution in detail. For this reason, and because Hamilton and Madison were each members of the Constitutional Convention, the Federalist Papers are often used today to help interpret the intentions of those drafting the Constitution.

Resumen: "Cine independiente y traducción" es el ensayo, resultado de un proyecto de investigación centrado en el cine independiente (de autor) americano, abordado desde la óptica de su traducción al español en las modalidades más utilizadas de la traducción audiovisual; el doblaje y la subtitulación. La obra analiza la forma de traducir (el "Método de traducción") en cinco películas independientes americanas realizadas entre los años 2001 y 2003, como el resultado del proceso de la búsqueda de soluciones ante los problemas que su traducción plantea. El método de traducción observado puede variar dependiendo de la modalidad de traducción elegida, ya que se obtiene un producto que en ocasiones puede llegar a parecer diferente. Este libro esta dirigido a estudiantes, investigadores y a todos los lectores interesados en el cine independiente y su traducción.
