Resumen: "The aim of the study reported here is to explore the possibility of applying the tools of corpus analysis to the study of the interaction between translation and gender. The computer-aided analysis of large amounts of text in electronic form, nowadays known as corpus analysis, has offered valuable insights in translation studies. It has also been used on some occasions in language and gender studies but, I believe, its potential has not been fully exploited in this area. In the field of translation and gender, to the besto of my knowledge, no studies have been undertaken using this approach. This is a first attempt and therefore has limited scope, but I expect to show that corpus-based research can offer some useful insights in this area as well."

Resumen: En los estudios de traducción e interpretación (ETI), el análisis del texto origen presenta enormes posibilidades (Nord 2005; De la Cova 2017; Szymyslik 2019). Para identificar elementos complejos en el texto para su análisis y sistematización, los ETI plantean interesantes conceptos abstractos y nocionalmente densos, pero que requieren de una operativización metodológica compleja y eminentemente cualitativa, por ejemplo: problema de traducción (Nord 1997/2001; De la Cova 2017; Hurtado 2017), dificultad (Dahl 2004; Dragsted 2004), o error (O’Brien 2012; Koby, Fields et al. 2014). Los estudios de corpus aplicados a la Traductología tienden a ser cuantitativos (corpus-based o corpus-driven, según Baker (2006)) o, excepcionalmente, mixtos, y permiten trabajar en un plano textual «manifiesto», reconocible por las herramientas. Sin embargo, los constructos complejos requieren metodologías con corpus esencialmente cualitativas, menos frecuentes por su complejidad. Este trabajo analiza la objetivación fundamentada de estos conceptos complejos para su estudio sistemático. Asimismo, presenta ejemplos de investigación cualitativa con corpus y analiza el potencial investigador de distintas herramientas en este contexto. La transferibilidad metodológica cualitativa centrada en constructos complejos y las metodologías adecuadas para estos contextos, desde la teoría fundamentada (Grounded Theory) y la categorización teórica bottom-up (Strauss y Corbin 1990; Robson 2002; Böhm 2000/2004; Silverman 2011; entre otros) son algunas de las principales conclusiones de este trabajo.

Resumen: In theory, translation studies does not exclude intralingual translation, but de facto empirical studies or discussions on the subject of intralingual translation are few and far between. This article argues for the proper inclusion of intralingual translation on the grounds of its many similarities with interlingual translation. For the sake of comparison, a general description of intralingual translation and its characteristics on the basis of five different Danish versions of a section of the Bible and an analysis of the microstrategies employed in each version are proposed. Similarities as well as differences between rewording and translation proper are discussed, the conclusion being that the differences between intralingual and interlingual translation seem to be more a question of degree than of kind.

Resumen: This paper addresses the problem of linguistic and cultural differences in literary translation, and more specifically in the translation of poetry. It examines a key concept in postmodernism: "the other", and its relationship with translation studies. This study aims to investigate the translation of the "other" in literature, and how this is assimilated/domesticated or made foreign/exotic in poetic translation. In other words, it probes the translation of ppoetry of SL-culture and TL-culture orientation. Toachieve this, various versions of Arabic translation of Shakespeare's sonnet 18 "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day" are examined. An analytical comparative method is used.

Resumen: Political identification has been generally ignored in Translation Studies, though the correlation of politics and translation has been an interest to many scholars since the late half of last century. An examination of the influence of political identification on translation of the Soviet laws in China in three periods (1917-1927, 1927-1949, and 1950s), offers a model of incorporating political identification in Translation Studies in general and in Pym's ethics of interculturality in particular. During the period of National Democratic Revolution (1917-1927), Sun Yat-sen's determination of learning from the Soviet Union brings the chance to start over and makes a beginning of translating the Soviet laws in China; the period of Revolutionary Base Areas (1927-1949) sees a large number of the Soviet laws translated and introduced in China due to the influence of the Soviet Union to the CPC and the latter's aspiration to apply the spirit of the Soviet systems in their practice; the years after the founding of PRC in 1950s witnesses a large-scale translation of the Soviet laws in China because of the new China's foreign policy of "leaning to one side" advanced by Chairman Mao Tse-tung. The analysis of the relationship between China's political identification with the old Soviet bloc and the number of published translations of the Soviet laws in China suggests a possible structural correlation: high political identification will generally result in an increase in the number of published translations in other cultures. This point of view is ignored by so many translation scholars, thus, a blind area, a lacuna, in Translation Studies. Hopefully this paper will serve as an initial step in focusing attention on this important issue, or, make more people interested in it. Of course, the link between these factors needs to be confirmed by studies of other countries.

Resumen: A History of Modern Translation Knowledge is the first attempt to map the coming into being of modern thinking about translation. It breaks with the well-established tradition of viewing history through the reductive lens of schools, theories, turns or interdisciplinary exchanges. It also challenges the artificial distinction between past and present and it sustains that the latter's historical roots go back far beyond the 1970s. Translation Studies is but part of a broader set of discourses on translation we propose to label "translation knowledge". Resumen: A lo largo de la historia de RITERM hemos podido contemplar la incorporación progresiva de la tecnología en las actividades terminológicas. En los primeros simposios y acciones de formación organizados por la red, a finales de los años 80 y principios de los 90, éramos conscientes que las situaciones económicas diversas por las que pasaban los países miembros no permitían en muchos de ellos disfrutar de las mismas infraestructuras que conocíamos en otros países europeos y norteamericanos. Por ello no era extraño que nos repitiéramos a nosotros mismos que se puede hacer terminología con escasos recursos, que la falta de infraestructura de los centros universitarios o de los servicios lingüísticos no debía ser una excusa para no avanzar ni para renunciar a la calidad. Hemos hecho caso de la recomendación, bien que hemos avanzado con lo que teníamos en cada momento. Pero afortunadamente en estos 24 años de RITERM también hemos podido ser espectadores, e incluso protagonistas, de los cambios que se han ido imponiendo en la tecnología en general y en las tecnologías del lenguaje en particular,que han alcanzado a la terminología y concretamente a la terminología iberoamericana. La tecnología ha cambiado ostensiblemente la manera de proceder de los centros de trabajo y de los profesionales. Y además ha condicionado los temas de la investigación y los contenidos de la formación. Algunos de los factores fundamentales que explican la progresión de la tecnificación de la terminología han sido el dominio en el mercado de los ordenadores personales, el abaratamiento de los equipos informáticos y el desarrollo de Internet como plataforma de difusión y de trabajo cooperativo.

Resumen: The present contribution aims at a comparative study of the Spanish retranslations of the French classic Le Grand Meaulnes. With the objective of identifying macro and micro-structural variations among the various retranslations, a parallel corpus is compiled, the source-text and the various translations are aligned and imported into a translation memory which allows for a targeted analysis of specific linguistic elements. The results obtained from the corpus analysis show that, despite their differences the retranslations display a relative homogeneity, in so far as they are largely source-text oriented and foreignizing. Relative homogeneity notwithstanding, differences can be observed between twentieth century-translations and those carried out in the twenty-first-century. The translators of the latter take a specific approach to translating the novel, either as a literary critic or by taking a critical stance towards a more assimilative approach adopted in an earlier translation.

Resumen: In any study of translations one must first decide what is to be counted as a "translation" and how such things are to be found, usually through recourse to bibliographical databases. We propose that, starting from the maximalist view that translations are potentially everywhere, various distribution processes impose a series of selective filters thanks to which some translations are more easily identified and accessible than others. The study of translation must be aware of these prior filters, and must know how to account for them, and sometimes how to overcome them. Research processes then necessarily impose their own selective filters, which may reduce or extend the number and kinds of translations given by prior filters. We present three research projects where the play of prior and research filters is very different. For one-off large-scale relational hypotheses, the Index Translationum is found to be relatively cost-efficient. For more detailed objects such as translation flows from Spanish into French in a specific period, a book-industry database offers significant advantages. And for a study marked by a paucity of texts, as is the case of translation from Korean into English following the Korean War, a combination of databases is necessary, the most useful turning out to be Amazon.

Resumen: Film translation in China began as early as 1949 and has been developing very fast. This article aims at providing an overview of the current situation of film translation in China and explores the two major types of English-Chinese film translation: dubbing and subtitling. Therefore, it can be roughly divided into two parts. The first part constitutes a general background for the study of film translation. The author of this article first discusses film's origin and nature, the features of film language and the classification of film translation. Of the four categories of film translation (subtitling, lip-sync dubbing, narration, and free-commentary), dubbing and subtitling are the main forms used in China. Then the differences between the two types and social preference for them are analyzed. The author also presents a summary of film translation's development and current studies on this topic. The second part probes into the details of dubbing and subtitling. This article investigates the features and technical constraints of dubbing and subtitling. The main techniques adopted in practice are illustrated through specific examples. Both forms have their relative advantages and disadvantages. In subtitling, standardization and simplification are its two important techniques. Standardization is concerned with the transfer of text mode - from spoken text to written text, while simplification is related to the technical constraints in subtitling, namely spatial and temporal constraints. In dubbing, the translator should make his translation fit into the pictures and synchronize the lines and the pictures, so lip synchronization, gestures and pauses are the major constraints in dubbing. As the two main forms of film translation in China, dubbing and subtitling coexist and compete with each other in the market.

Resumen: Translation traces embrace a wide range of inheritance forms in cultural production practices. Pseudo-originals disclose a kind of literary creation pattern which is a partial or full cross-lingual plagiarism of a text by a predecessor or a contemporary from another language-culture. Well-known quotations in a foreign language are frequently employed by speakers or writers via impromptu translating or memory-based appropriation from an available translation. These translated quotations may well be imitated by text producers to derive a large number of variations in the target culture. Plagiarisms or borrowings are also seen in retranslations of great world classics. As two largely uncharted territories, indirect translation and back translation make translation traces too weak to be located. The inheritance of translation beliefs indicates various genealogies, such as husband-wife genealogy, father-daughter genealogy and so on. Research on the origins of translative memes, their morphology and typology of transmission as well as their mutative reasons may create a new area for Translation Studies.

Resumen: El trabajo colaborativo con usuarios de herramientas lexicográficas y terminográficas destinadas a ellos mismos, resulta de gran utilidad para elaborar una herramienta más realista y de mayor usabilidad, ya que de esta manera se tienen en cuenta las necesidades y competencias de usuarios reales. De esta forma, dichos recursos pueden beneficiarse de la experiencia de uso de sus diferentes grupos de usuarios potenciales. Aunque la definición de los perfiles de usuario y sus necesidades ha sido una preocupación en la investigación lexicográfica y teminológica, son pocos los estudios que se centren en los aspectos metodológicos del diseño de estudios empíricos que evalúen dichos recursos. Creemos que la evaluación de estos recursos se puede considerar trabajo estrechamente colaborativo con el usuario. En este contexto, presentamos una revisión de los principales trabajos dedicados al estudio de los distintos perfiles de usuario (Bergenholtz and Tarp 2003, 2010), con el objetivo de describir las necesidades y los perfiles de usuario de EcoLexicon (http://ecolexicon.ugr.es), una base de conocimiento sobre el medio ambiente. Siguiendo las directrices más aceptadas en el campo de la Psicología para el diseño de herramientas de medición e ítems, y tras varios estudios piloto desarrollados en 2008 y 2010, diseñamos un cuestionario para evaluar y validar <EcoLexicon> en el campo de la Traducción, centrándonos en un perfil de usuario concreto: los estudiantes de traducción. El cuestionario fue elaborado con LimeSurvey® y respondido en línea en enero y marzo de 2011 por 44 estudiantes de tercer año de la Facultad de Traducción e Interpretación de la Universidad de Granada (España).

Resumen: Este trabajo surge a partir del proyecto de investigación realizado en el marco de la maestría en Traducción e Investigación de la Universidad Jaume I (UJI), cuyo objetivo principal fue investigar si, en la corrección de traducciones en el ámbito académico, la aplicación de un baremo de corrección servía para atenuar las divergencias entre los evaluadores y reducir, así, el nivel de subjetividad. El experimento realizado se limitó a la comparación de los resultados obtenidos cuando se corrige con un baremo analítico y cuando se realiza una corrección holística sin aplicar baremo alguno.En una segunda etapa -cuyos primeros resultados se incluyen en esta presentación- me aboqué a la elaboración de una herramienta de corrección que, a la vez que permitiera unificar criterios entre los evaluadores, apuntara a sistematizar el proceso de corrección en los exámenes finales de traducción.

Resumen: Les recherches sur les politiques de langue passent le rôle clé des politiques de traduction sous silence. Le présent article défend l'idée que toute politique de langue présuppose une politique de traduction. À l'aide de divers exemples de conflits et de réglementations relatifs à la langue et à la traduction en Belgique (surtout) et ailleurs, il cherche à illustrer comment, dans un contexte de mondialisation grandissante, accompagnée de confrontations entre cultures et ethnicités, certaines politiques de traduction conditionnent et règlent la présence des langues minoritaires dans la sphère publique. Elles codéterminent, par conséquent, les droits linguistiques, culturels, sociaux, politiques, économiques. des minorités. Des recherches à grande échelle sur les politiques de traduction dans les sociétés passées et présentes devraient augmenter la sensibilité sociétale à l'égard du rôle clé de la traduction dans ces questions fondamentales et favoriser l'émergence de solutions raisonnées. Il s'agit là d'un nouveau défi pour la traductologie.

Resumen: En 1972 J. S. Holmes dibujaba el "mapa" de una disciplina que denominó Estudios de Traducción. El "mapa" de Holmes organiza la disciplina en tres ramas: la teórica, que explica y predice los fenómenos de traducción, la descriptiva, que recoge y sistematiza los fenómenos empíricos objeto de estudio, además de observar y analizar las regularidades del comportamiento traductor, y la aplicada, que se ocupa de la elaboración de materiales y herramientas que faciliten la labor de traducir o las actividades relacionadas con ellas. En este "mapa" el papel de la rama descriptiva es vital, ya que sobre ella descansan tanto la posibilidad de formular una teoría originada en la práctica de la traducción como las aplicaciones que de ella se deriven. En torno a los Estudios Descriptivos de Traducción (EDT) se articulan la teoría y las aplicaciones, cuya propia existencia depende de ellos. Al hablar de los EDT nos referimos con frecuencia a hechos empíricos, constatables, a la realidad que existe frente a la especulación. Los EDT son el puente entre la teoría y la práctica, el punto de partida necesario hacia los estudios aplicados, y constituyen un camino de ida y vuelta entre la práctica real y la que los traductores producirán en el futuro. Son sin duda una potente metodología que ha permitido secuenciar los distintos pasos de la investigación básica en Estudios de Traducción, todo un "protocolo" de actuación investigadora.
