Resumen: This article is a presentation of the general framework of a research project in which 56 translated and 94 non-translated books published for children in Argentina during 1997 are analyzed. In the project, the translated books are compared with the non-translated ones from paratextual, literary and linguistic viewpoints. Translation is considered to be a decision-making process and the broad approach proposed here makes possible a comparison of the decisions taken by publishers and translators in different areas and, most importantly, to the interrelations of these decisions. The results will increase the general knowledge of translation for children and of literature published for children in an Argentinean context. Moreover, they will be of importance for methodological issues such as the selection of corpora.

Resumen: This empirical-experimental study focuses on the processing of metaphorical expressions in sight translation (STR), a particular branch of interpreting. In order to test whether linguistic metaphors pose cognitive challenges for sight translators, we designed a within-subject experiment with 30 undergraduate taking an intermediate-level interpreting course at a Chinese university. Three streams of data, namely processing times, translation quality assessments, questionnaires and retrospective interviews, were collected and analysed for triangulation purposes.pThe results showed that metaphorical expressions took more time to process, and their presence resulted in more translation failures. In other words, the inclusion of linguistic metaphors slowed down the speed of production and compromised the quality of translation, meaning that the STR of metaphors requires more effort than for their literal counterparts. The results also suggested that the extra effort was mainly invested in the reading phase, rather than in the production phase. The data revealed that mistranslations resulting from incomplete understanding, and the ensuing imbalance in the allocation of processing capacity between the reading and production tasks, far outnumbered those resulting from the failure to find appropriate target-language terms. By adopting STR as the vehicle for examining metaphorical expressions, this study also shed some light on how metaphors are processed in a bilingual environment.

Resumen: Los días 25, 26 y 27 de octubre de 2012, en el Campus de San Vicente del Raspeig de la <Universidad de Alicante> celebramos el XIII Simposio Iberoamericano de Terminología, <RITerm 2012>, con el título ''<Terminología, traducción y TIC: interacción social y trabajo colaborativo para la construcción y difusión del conocimiento>''. La colaboración entre el Instituto Interuniversitario de <Lenguas Modernas Aplicadas> (<IULMA>) y la <Red Iberoamericana de Terminología> culminó con la integración del Instituto y la Red como convocantes del mencionado Simposio. El día 24 se celebraron además dos talleres previos sobre trabajo colaborativo y traducción audiovisual. El título que en esta ocasión tiene el Simposio obedecía a los grandes cambios de los que está siendo partícipe la sociedad actual, cambios que nos han llevado a una nueva forma de interrelacionarnos unos con otros, de crear conocimiento y, en definitiva, de llevar a cabo nuestras profesiones. En efecto, las nuevas Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (TIC) están teniendo un gran impacto sobre el modo de construir y difundir el conocimiento en la sociedad en general, pero también, y más específicamente, en los modos de trabajo, de investigación y de interrelación social tanto en terminología como en traducción. Por ello, además de los objetivos que nos marcamos para este evento de carácter internacional, los esfuerzos del mismo se centraron en aunar durante su realización a la comunidad profesional y académica de las áreas de conocimiento involucradas con el fin de construir y difundir conocimiento en torno a nuevos conceptos teóricos y aplicados que se plantean por el impacto de las TIC y de la web 2.0 (o web social) en las disciplinas de terminología y traducción.

Resumen: Although fuzziness is one of the innate characteristics of language, shared by both Chinese and English, there do exist apparent differentiations between them as far as their roles in aesthetic-effect-generating, representation mode, application field suitability and aesthetic impact are concerned, which has remained a great challenge and regret in either English to Chinese (E-C) or Chinese to English (C-E) translation, particularly in the latter. It's no exaggeration to say that translation is a profession with no lack of regret and translators are professional regret-tasters. The most impressive regret in C-E translation might lie in the fact that the talent and capability of the translators is painfully restricted in reproducing and conveying the aesthetic effect of Chinese fuzzy expressions. As an artistically conceived language, Chinese invites macro-induction in terms of linguistic features while English, being logic-oriented, analysis-based and hypotaxis-dependent, is largely ignorant of what is called macro-induction. Hence abundant aesthetic genius of Chinese fuzzy expressions can hardly find its way into the English version. It can be said that generally the process of C-E translation is one of complementing continuously "meaning blank", of changing "indeterminacy of meaning" into "determinacy of meaning", with the E-C translation as the opposite. Many language problems in communication are essentially closely related to nationality psychologic archetype complex, which may be a significant try in translation study.

Resumen: En este trabajo se discuten las orientaciones básicas que debiera tener la formación de traductores audiovisuales y el estudio de la traducción audiovisual en la universidad tras la experiencia acumulada en España en las dos últimas décadas y a la luz de cómo se está desenvolviendo el sector y sus previsiones de futuro. El objeto de estudio, la traducción audiovisual, se describe como una actividad en permanente y rapidísimo cambio cuya definición debería hacerse de forma flexible para incorporar las nuevas actividades y rechazar las ya obsoletas. Se insiste en la integración de los productos audiovisuales y los multimedias y en las consecuencias de este fenómeno. También se describe la situación en el sector, que exige del profesional una gran versatilidad, habilidades humanísticas y técnicas, la destreza para utilizar simultáneamente diferentes tipos de traducción audiovisual, conocimientos informáticos especializados y una apertura hacia actividades más propias del mundo empresarial que del puramente traductor.

Resumen: La conception de « fonction » en traductologie est loin de faire unanimité. Le terme est utilisé par plusieurs chercheurs et plusieurs écoles traductologiques, sans avoir toujours la même valeur. Nous proposons d'examiner l'évolution du concept de « fonction » à travers deux grandes théories traductologiques contemporaines (théorie du skopos, théorie du polysystème), en mentionnant certaines sources épistémologiques communes à ces écoles. Parmi les sources communes, nous mentionnons le structuralisme tchécoslovaque du Cercle linguistique de Prague de l'entre-deux-guerres, dont l'apport est décisif dans l'approche descriptive et fonctionnaliste des traductologues tchécoslovaques, Jirí Levý ou Anton Popovic, dans les années soixante et soixante-dix. Du point de vue méthodologique, notre article s'inscrit dans une métathéorie de la traduction et en même temps peut être considéré comme une contribution à la genèse et l'historiographie des théories traductologiques

Resumen: This paper describes how mediation in translation is realized by means of inclusion and exclusion of information at the selection stage and discursive deviations at the presentation stage in the process of target text production. It discusses the effect of mediation in relation to two types of the target text recipients, one is termed professional readers representing the censoring authorities and the other the intended reading public, and their respective socio-cultural backgrounds. Our argument in this paper is that an investigation of translation from the perspective of mediation helps reveal the power struggle underlying the translation process. The detailed description of the textual realization of mediation, in particular, helps create an awareness of the various ways the target text producer may take to mediate the translation process to achieve a compromise between the author's interests and the professional readers' political concerns so as to get the translation published.

Resumen: Translation as a cultural process can be used in various ways to suppress or promote ideologies. Within the framework of Critical Studies in Translation, this article examines the presence of the phenomenon of manipulation; that is, deliberate alteration of central topics and messages for ideological purposes, in the Spanish translation of the story The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde. It proposes that Wilde's specific intent in using the fairy tale genre to battle heterosexism (the belief that heterosexuality is the only norm) is not transmitted in any of the Spanish versions of the story, since its English publication in 1888 to the twenty-first century. The analysis proves that all twelve translations of the story found, included the famous translation by Jorge Luis Borges in 1910, manipulate the sex and sexuality of the characters by taking advantage of the commonly perceived ambiguities between the grammatical and cultural gender in Spanish. This is done in such a way that one of the messages of the story, the redemption of homosexual love and its acceptance by God, is omitted entirely to become, and promote, the standard and conventional view of sexuality that dominates contemporary Western tradition. The article finishes by pointing out the linguistic choices that need to be considered for a new translation of the story and provides the translation of a passage as an example.

Resumen: Despite the fact that translation teaching research has been gaining momentum over the last two decades, little has been written and therefore known about translation assessment in the teaching context. This article reports on a data-based empirical study of translation testing in China. The issues raised in it range from teachers’ attitudes towards testing to its objectives, design, contents, frequency, and its pedagogical roles. It is suggested that more research be done on translation testing, of which the first task is to develop a theoretical framework to provide guidance for translation testing practice and research. It is further recommended that translation testing be made more teaching-oriented and brought closer to the real world of professional translation.

Resumen: The translation, dissemination and reception of knowledge has served as an excellent indicator of changing ideologies and the major catalyst for institutional changes, language reforms and social transformation in China. However, English representations of the Chinese tradition of translation (e.g. Hung 2005; Hung and Pollard 2009) have not incorporated research findings from Chinese studies (e.g. Cohen 1995; Amelung, Kurtz and Lackner 2001; Elman 2005) and tend to provide unsubstantiated generalizations and hasty conclusions. This article uses a combination of "cultural tool" (Even-Zohar 2005) and "culture planning" (Even-Zohar 2008) as a frame of reference to provide a macroscopic perspective on knowledge translation in different Chinese historical periods as "a means of planning" (Toury 2002:?166) to promote religious agendas, modernize traditional Chinese natural studies, Westernize educational and academic systems, facilitate modernization of the state or participate in global knowledge production.

Resumen: Les affinités sont étonnantes entre les constatations épistémologiques que la théorie du chaos a amené les sciences dites exactes à faire et une pensée de la traduction libérée d’une conception fixiste du sens. Penser la traduction en passant par la théorie du chaos, c’est surtout annuler les dichotomies inopérantes échues des conceptualisations traditionnelles, visée participant des discours de la « troisième voie ». Resumen: En The Lord of the Rings J. R. R. Tolkien propone su "tesis lingüística" acerca de la distribución de dialectos y cronolectos en Tierra Media. Para ello, recurre a su educación filosófica y provee una descripción holística de lso fenómenos de evolución lingüística y de los procesos de formación y derivación dialectales. En la traducción al castellano de la editorial Minotauro, y la única oficialmente disponible hasta el momento en todo el mundohispanohablante, la "tesis" se encuentra "silenciada". Esta ausencia impacta inevitablemente en la configuración de la poética autoral entre los consumidores de la versión castellana de la trilogía.

Resumen: <FunGramKB> es una base de conocimiento léxico-conceptual multipropósito y multilingüe, diseñada para su aplicación en tareas de procesamiento del lenguaje natural (Periñán y Arcas 2004; Mairal y Periñán, 2009). Su estructura modular refleja tres niveles independientes de conocimiento (léxico, gramatical y ontológico), pero relacionados entre sí, lo cual permite aplicar la base de conocimiento a labores de traducción automática o de razonamiento artificial en diversas lenguas (Periñán y Mairal, 2010), en función de un módulo conceptual compartido por todas las lenguas. Así, la Ontología está compuesta de dos estructuras: un módulo de propósito general (la ontología nuclear) y varios módulos terminológicos de dominios específicos. La presente contribución muestra cómo se desarrolla la jerarquización cognitiva de las entidades en la Ontología satélite del crimen organizado y el terrorismo 2 vinculada a la Ontología nuclear de FunGramKB. A modo de ilustración ofrecemos ejemplos de este dominio donde presentamos casos de «conceptos espejo» y de conceptos especializados.
