Resumen: In western translation theories, Lawrence Venuti and Eugene Nida appear to be standing at too opposing poles regarding the equivalence theory, and are notable for their prominent disagreement on the issue. Their theories diverge in their responses to equivalence, and disagree, essentially, on the functions of translation as well as the aspects of an acceptable translation. This disagreement unfolded itself clearly during a conference at Binghamton University in 1991. In this essay, I intend to juxtapose the exceptionally different theoretical approaches of these two prominent translation scholars. I also intend to show how Venuti's views on translation in practice challenges Nida's theoretical approaches to translation, and surprisingly enough his own theories particularly speaking, foreignizing and domesticating translations in which he has been extensively engaged. Finally I intend to show how Venuti's practice of translation challenges his earlier attack on Nida's conceptions of the "dynamic equivalence," "naturalness of expression" (Nida 1964: 159) and the notion of "the equivalent effect" (de Waard & Nida 1986: 9).

Resumen: Translation S- and T-universals have been widely discussed in Translation Studies and their psycholinguistic study has been among the priority topics today. The article is focused on the study of translation 'S- universals' (Chesterman 2004) and is based both on the psycholinguistic model of literary translation, which combines today's neuroscience theories of cognitivism and connectionism, and on the experimental data that demonstrate its validity. The model is resulted in a series of experiments held with undergraduate students of translation department. The results of the study proved the idea of existing specific procedural and discursive S-universals in literary translation. As the empirical data showed, these universals maintain the status of common strategies depending on translator's cognitive style (analytical or synthetic) and his dominant channel (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) of source text perception.

Resumen: Translation Studies is an academic discipline that has managed to establish itself as such thanks to the research and theoretical reflection on its main object of study, i.e. translation. Yet, given the applied nature of this field, there is some disagreement as to whether translation theory is relevant in the practice of translation. The never-ending battle between these two dimensions of the discipline has given rise to a series of myths and prejudices concerning Translation Studies that extend into both the sphere of translation as a profession and the academic context. Although a number of authors have highlighted the contributions that translation theory has to offer in the training of translators (Gile 1995, 2010; Chesterman and Wagner 2002; Munday 2012), Translation theory usually plays a secondary role in the curricula of Spanish universities. At the same time, students' attitude towards the more theoretical subjects seems to be one of rejection. Here we conduct an empirical study to analyse the preconceptions that Translation and Interpreting (T&I) undergraduate and post-graduate students have concerning the usefulness and benefits of translation theory in their training.

Resumen: This is a completely revised and updated version of one of the standard works on translation theory. The original model was one of the first attempts to apply pragmatic theories of language use to the assessment of translation quality. This pragmatic perspective is now enriched in the light of research into the interdependency of lenguage, situation and culture. Specifically, issues of culture-specific discourse behaviour modes, value-systems and perspectives are confronted with the demands of intelcultural communication imposed by the translational task. In the light of detailed contrastive studies of the language-pair German and English, the author illustrates the workings of a so-called "cultural filter" in different types of text under different conditions. In the light of these findings, the notions of "covert" and "overt" translation and their appropriacy under different social constraints are radically revised. The new model for the analysis of source text and translation is applied to a corpus of German-English English-German translations.

Resumen: The notion of systems has helped revolutionize translation studies since the 1970s. As a key part of many descriptive approaches, it has broken with the prescriptive focus on what translation should be, encouraging researchers to ask what translation does in specific cultural settings. Resumen: Le présent article fait état d'un aperçu de la réflexion, en matière de théorie de la traduction, d'un important groupe de professeurs d'universités espagnoles qui oeuvrent en traduction ou en traductologie. Dans les années 1990, une série d'ouvrages pionniers voient le jour et offrent une riche diversité de concepts sur la théorie de la traduction et sur son application didactique. Si, pour Lvóvskaya, il convient de mettre l'accent sur l'équivalence dans la communication bilingue, pour Elena, il s'agit plutôt d'appliquer à l'espagnol les théories allemandes du fonctionnalisme et du skopos. Tricás, quant à elle, développe l'application des théories de l'argumentation linguistique en traduction sur le plan textuel, tandis que Hurtado se centre sur un développement exhaustif de chacun des piliers de la traduction. Rabadán et Merino, de leur côté, centrent leurs travaux sur les Études descriptives de traduction (EDT). Resumen: Eugene Nida ha sido el más influyente traductólogo de nuestros tiempos. En esta obra, fruto del estudio de muchísimas lenguas y de sus culturas, Nida señala que la función del traductor consiste en transmitir el contenido del mensaje original de la manera más clara y más fiel posible, teniendo en cuenta mucho más la estructura de la lengua de llegada y la cultura en que ésta se inserta, que la forma originaria del texto. Para Nida la traducción es esencialmente un proceso de comunicación, lo que significa que el traductor debe ir más allá de las estructuras léxicas para tomar en consideración la manera en que se supone que un determinado público va a comprender un texto. Su teoría de la equivalencia dinámica está orientada a provocar en los destinatarios de un texto traducido la misma reacción que pudieron haber experimentado los receptores del texto original ante éste. Él mismo ha colaborado en la traducción realizada por su esposa, M. Elena Fernández-Miranda-Nida, que ha sido jefa del Departamento español de la Dirección General de Traducción de la Comisión Europea.

Su repaso seguirá un orden cronológico, en la medida de lo posible, y dialéctico, cada uno de los intentos teóricos no se verá de forma aislada, sinó en relacion con los demás. dada la multiplicidad de enfoques traductológicos, hoy por hoy parece necesaria una teoría de la traducción integradora. Este es uno de los retos que deberán afrontar los estudios de traducción en el siglo XXI. De momento, este libro solo pretende ser una obra introductoria y divulgativa a la vez de las teorías contemporáneas de la traducción.

Resumen: La conception de « fonction » en traductologie est loin de faire unanimité. Le terme est utilisé par plusieurs chercheurs et plusieurs écoles traductologiques, sans avoir toujours la même valeur. Nous proposons d'examiner l'évolution du concept de « fonction » à travers deux grandes théories traductologiques contemporaines (théorie du skopos, théorie du polysystème), en mentionnant certaines sources épistémologiques communes à ces écoles. Parmi les sources communes, nous mentionnons le structuralisme tchécoslovaque du Cercle linguistique de Prague de l'entre-deux-guerres, dont l'apport est décisif dans l'approche descriptive et fonctionnaliste des traductologues tchécoslovaques, Jirí Levý ou Anton Popovic, dans les années soixante et soixante-dix. Du point de vue méthodologique, notre article s'inscrit dans une métathéorie de la traduction et en même temps peut être considéré comme une contribution à la genèse et l'historiographie des théories traductologiques

Resumen: Les affinités sont étonnantes entre les constatations épistémologiques que la théorie du chaos a amené les sciences dites exactes à faire et une pensée de la traduction libérée d’une conception fixiste du sens.
