Resumen: The notion of systems has helped revolutionize translation studies since the 1970s. As a key part of many descriptive approaches, it has broken with the prescriptive focus on what translation should be, encouraging researchers to ask what translation does in specific cultural settings. From his privileged position as a direct participant in these developments, Theo Hermans explains how contemporary descriptive approaches came about, what the basic ideas were, and how those ideas have evolved over time. His discussion addresses the fundamental problems of translation norms, equivalence, polysystems and social systems, covering not only the work of Levý, Holmes, Even-Zohar, Toury, Lefevere, Lambert, Van Leuven-Zwart, Dhulst and others, but also giving special attention to recent contributions derived from Pierre Bourdieu and Niklas Luhmann. An added focus on practical questions of how to investigate translation (problems of definition, description, assessment of readerships, etc.)

Resumen: Des représentations graphiques permettent de visualiser les objets et de trouver le mot juste, en français et en anglais. Les notions abstraites sont donc absentes. L'organisation est faite autour de treize thèmes, avec quelques sous-thèmes. Index alphabétique en chacune des langues. En comparaison avec le "Dictionnaire the ́matique visuel français-anglais" de J.-C. Corbeil, l'ouvrage de R. Bragonier, contient des thèmes moins nombreux; les pages d'illustrations sont plus chargées et le vocabulaire accompagnant les illustrations est plus abondant et détaillé; chaque page d'illustrations comporte une brève introduction pour enrichir les connaissances. Les deux dictionnaires ne sont pas un dédoublement l'un de l'autre; ils sont plutôt complémentaires.

Resumen: Uno de los objetivos de la Comisión de Idioma Inglés es explorar los usos y las costumbres de diferentes comunidades angloparlantes. Dada la gran comunidad irlandesa que se estableció en la Argentina en el siglo xix y los estrechos lazos construidos desde entonces, la Comisión decidió realizarle una entrevista a un descendiente de los inmigrantes irlandeses. En esta entrevista, Eduardo Clancy, arquitecto y miembro de la Junta de Estudios Históricos de San Antonio de Areco, en la provincia de Buenos Aires, nos cuenta cómo llegó la comunidad irlandesa a la Argentina, dónde se establecieron y cuáles eran sus ocupaciones y costumbres. ¿Habrán podido conservar el idioma inglés como parte de su cultura?
