Resumen: A third edition of Dr. Crystal's popular introduction to linguistics has been made necessary by the continued rapid expansion of courses in linguistics and the emphasis now placed upon the subject in many colleges of education. The author points aout that the area of expansion has been almost entirely in the provision of combined subject degrees and that there is now a definite tendency for niversity work in linguistics to be seen as a foundation and perspective for coursework in other fields, especially modern languages. Resumen: In this new edition there is a new chapter on teaching vocabulary, a section on discovery techniques, more on task-based learning and learner training, and a recognition of the change of perception about what communicative competence might be. Many of the categories of communicative activities have been rearranged and there is a more detailed account of teacher roles, together with a section on the use of the mother tongue. The sample lesson plan has been changed and the many examples from textbooks generally reflect the materials now in use rather than those which were current when the first edition came out. The structure of "The Practice of English Language Teaching" remains essentially the same. In part A; Background, the author looks at some of the theoretical concerns which influence the teaching of English as a foreign language. In part B, Practice, the author looks at study materials and techniques for teaching, and in part C, Management and Planning, he looks at how classrooms and students can be organized and what is the best way to prepare for a lesson. The appendix on materials evaluation should help anyone who is in a position to select the textbook which the students are going to use. "The Practice of Language Teaching" deals specifically with the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL). It is not focused especially on English as a second language (ESL) although much of the context of the book can be applied to that slightly different teaching situation. The book is directed at the teaching of "general" English; the teaching of English for specific purposes (ESP) does not form a major part of the work.

He places modern linguistics in historical perspective and traces in the present century six "ages" in its development, each with its dominant, and abiding theme. His central chapter discusses, one by one, phonetics, phonology, morphology, "surface" syntax, "deep" syntax, and lastly semantics.

Temas: FONÉTICA; VOCALES; NORMALIZACION LINGUISTICA; LENGUAJE; INGLÉS.
Tipo de material: Texto Texto; Forma literaria: No es ficción
Detalles de publicación: London : Arnold, 2001
Resumen: It is beyond doubt that this book remains the most authoritative introduction to English phonetics. With this new edition, Cruttenden has contributed his part to safeguarding the place the book merits for the coming years; Linguistics, Reviewing the 5th edition Since its publication, Gimson's Pronunciation of English has been acknowledged as the standard description, both comprehensive and accessible, of spoken English: an essential book for anyone studying the sounds and tones of English or teaching English pronunciation and intonation to non-native speakers. This sixth edition has been substantia11y revised throughout, with particular emphasis on those areas that have seen rapid changes in the last five years. The chapter on standard and regional accents has been expanded to reflect accurately the changes in attitude to language standards, with particular focus on recently recognized variation within a wider Received Pronunciation, such as Estuary English. The new edition continues to provide valuable guidance on how to teach the sounds of English to foreign learners, for whom a new subsection on pronouncing dictionaries has been added. In addition, many other sections have been substantia11y rewritten, including those on the sy11able and phonotactics and on word accent, with new spectrograms added to improve the acoustic information. As with a11 previous editions of this classic work, great care has been taken to preserve the spirit of the original edition, so that Gimson's Pronunciation of English will maintain its position as the standard reference book in the field for many years to come. Alan Cruttenden is Professor of Phonetics at the University of Manchester, UK

Resumen: Exploring Phonetics and Pronunciation is aimed at all those intermediate and upper-intermediate students who think Phonetics is a boring and difficult subject, almost as hard as learning another language. Well, in fact, there are more pleasant and easier ways of dealing with vowels and consonants, without falling asleep after repeating words and sounds for hours in order to get a good pronunciation and sound more like a native speaker. This book is divided into three main parts: "Before Starting you Should Know", "Course Book" and "Exercises", meant to go through the different grammar topics and activities step by step in a very clear way.

Resumen: In this book, the term "idiom" is used in a very wide sense. It is intended to include peculiar meanings of words and peculiar turns of expression which from long usage have become established in the english language. Hence it will readily be judged that it cannot pretend to be an exhaustive book. The appendix to this volume explains some of the common allusions to persons and incidents mentioned in the Bible.
