Resumen: The structure of the parent book has benn preserved so that reference can easily be made to it, though in many respects the authors have incorporated revisions, improvements, and expansion. Above all, the present treatment has benn adapted to the needs os students who require maximum comprehensiveness with maximum economy of presentation. The book is concerned chiefly, with the "common core" of English, but Randolph Quirk and Sidney Greenbaum are careful at all relevant ppoints to indicate constructions which distinguish spoken from written formal from informal, or British from American usage.

Resumen: The Longman Grammar of spoken and written english is an entirely new grammar of American and British English -from the language of conversation to the language of academic textbooks. There are no made-up examples in this groundbreaking new grammar. The authors began, not with preconceived notions of the grammar of English, but with a huge bank of language data, the Longman Corpus Network.

Resumen: (...) "The very first job I did, the very first thing I published, was a translation from an old Norse text, an old Icelandic saga, a runic saga, and that task of translation was an eye-opener to me about the difficulties that are involved in translation. Because here I was, translating a work that had been written a thousand years before in a very very different society, and having to put it into an English that the late 20th. century British and American readers would understand, while at the same time trying to capture some of the social and political mores, and literaty mores, of the time en which the runic saga was written".
