Now this classic is available in a new edition--the first major revision since Fowler's original. Rewritten, updated, and expanded to take into account the vast linguistic changes of the past three-quarters of a century, here are thousands of alphabetically arranged entries, offering advice and background information on all aspects of the English language, from grammar to spelling to literary style. This masterful revision has been carried out by Robert Burchfield, hailed by The Chicago Tribune as "the greatest living lexicographer." Resumen: Uno de los mecanismos más fértiles de innovación léxica en distintas variedades del español actual son las voces de origen anglosajón. En consideración a ello, se han realizado diversos estudios sobre el préstamo del inglés y su significación en la evolución del léxico en español. Una nueva forma de aproximarse a estos cambios en la creación léxica es a través de la sintagmación con recursos anglicados. En el presente estudio se observó la neología sintagmática a través de creaciones híbridas formadas con préstamos del inglésy de calcos por influencia de esa lengua.

Resumen: Desde hace unas décadas, Chile participa activamente del fenómeno de la globalización debido a la adopción del modelo de desarrollo económico y social sustentado en la economía social de mercado. En este contexto, se producen intercambios a todo nivel, principalmente en los ámbitos económico, social y cultural. Estos intercambios influyen inexorablemente en el uso y, por ende, en la evolución de la lengua de las comunidades participantes, sobre todo en aquellas culturas más receptivas. Ahora bien, la mayor parte de estos intercambios se llevan a cabo en lengua inglesa, razón por la que vocablos de origen anglosajón se introducen en la lengua vernácula a través de la prensa e influyen en la cultura receptora. En este trabajo se presentan pruebas de la presencia en la prensa escrita chilena de anglicismos que corresponden a distintos ámbitos de la actividad humana. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron analizar los anglicismos presentes en la prensa, determinar su frecuencia de uso e inferir las posibles razones de su adopción por parte de los hablantes. Para llevar a cabo este trabajo se seleccionaron los anglicismos recopilados por la Antena Chilena de Neología entre los años 2007 y 2008 y, posteriormente, se cuantificaron y clasificaron de acuerdo a diversos parámetros.

Resumen: En esta obra original, que contó desde su inicio con el apoyo de la Unión Latina, Sergio Corrêa da Costa ha reunido y comentado una colección de dieciséis mil ejemplos de usos de lo que él llama las "palabras sin fronteras", es decir, aquellos vocablos que han sobrepasado las fronteras de los países en que nacieron y se han convertido en portadoras de una especie de denominación de origen. Estas palabras, que pueden designar tanto nociones abstractas o funciones, como objetos usuales o indicaciones de la mayor trivialidad, se dispersan un poco por todas partes y acaban por constituir una especie de "vocabulario sin fronteras" que crece sin cesar y acerca a las distintas culturas. "Es un libro de lingüística, cuyo autor no es un lingüista, sino más bien un humanista". El autor se ha interesado únicamente en las palabras trasladadas de una lengua a otras, ya sea conservándola intacta, ya sea con modificaciones formales poco importantes. Para no convertir en demasiado técnica la presentación tipográfica de los ejemplos de uso de estos préstamos lingüísticos, las distintas variantes existentes en ciertos países van a continuación de las palabras y expresiones, detrás de una barra diagonal, sin otra distinción cualitativa.

Resumen: The objective of this research is to develop a model of consecutive interpretation that can cope with a number of linguistic, pragmatic, stylistic, thematic, discourse and communicative problems a conference interpreter encounters while interpreting from English into Arabic or vice versa. A linguistic corpus of one hundred page English speeches delivered at the United Nation General Assembly sessions and interpreted into Arabic is analysed. The proposed model caters for both the SL and TL communicative contexts and views the conference interpreter as a mediator who decodes the original message and encodes it appropriately. The model is tested against the collected sample of linguistic data. It has proved to be capable of identifying inconsistencies and inaccuracies in five major areas: textual, stylistic, lexical, collocation and structural; the percentage of each is statistically calculated.

Resumen: Memes of Translation is a search for coherence in translation theory based on the notion of Memes: ideas that spread, develop and replicate, like genes. The author explores a wide range of ideas on translation, mapping the "meme pool" of translation theory with chapters on translation history, norms, strategies, assessment, ethics, and translator training. The aim of the book is to search for a perspective from which the immense variety of ideas about translation can be related. The unifying thread is the philosophy of Karl Popper. The book proposes the beginnings of a Popperian theory of translation, based on the fundamental concepts of norms, strategies, and values. Resumen: Medical Translation Step by Step provides a pedagogical approach to medical translation based on learner and learning-centred teaching tasks, revolving around interaction: pair and group work to carry out the tasks and exercises to practice the points covered. Starting from a broad communication framework, the book follows a top-down approach to medical translation: communication--genres--texts--terms and other units of specialized knowledge. It is positively focused in that it does not insist on error analysis, but rather on ways of writing good translations and empowering both students and teachers.

Resumen: Legal English is conservative, formal, syntactically complex and often archaic, with obscure expressions that hardly occur in the language at large. Of course, all professions have their own jargon. But, in recent times, lawyers have tried to make their profession less mysterious. With this background information and within the framework of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and a passing reference to plain English campaigns, this paper will explore the intricacies of "legalese" by analyzing several extracts (from wills, statutes...) which will help Ilústrate the technical terminology of the subject in hand. Such key features of written legal language as: manner, typography and layout, lexis and grammar, will be especially highlighted. Other text segments will also be exploited, drawn from recently published newspa-per and magazine articles, commonly read by native speakers, and, generally packed with legal terms and phrases that the layman, more often than not comes across when reading ,them. Finally, this talk will be supplemented with one or two excerpts from lively cassette material to give participants/students extra exposure to the language of the law, show them how this register functions and develop their lis-tening skills and pronunciation.
