Resumen: The implementation of the American neoliberal model in Chile four decades ago, in addition to the nation's participation in the globalized world, has led to significant changes in society. In fact, the effects of the adoption of that paradigm are evident in a wide variety of areas, including that of the use of the language. For this reason, it is of interest for linguists and translators to do research on the influence of the English language and American culture on Chilean society. For this reason, the objectives of this study were to verify the presence of English loanwords in the written press in order to describe them, determine their type and token frequency and patterns of use, and infer the causes of their adoption in Spanish.

Resumen: The common problems of English language structure have to be overcome by all students, and the difficulties they find are similar in all parts of the world. Regional differences can always be dealt with by the teacher, who should be aware of the particular problems of his students. The following general principles are self-evident: all students want to speak, write and read the normal accepted English of today and this can only be achieved by constante practice of existing forms, with some rational explanation of the grammatical devices employed, wherever this is possible.

Resumen: The aim of this book is to provide an easy introduction to the understanding of Legal English. The book is in four parts. In the first and second parts, a theoretical background is provided where emphasis is place on analysing the peculiar features of this variety of ESP (English for Specific Purposes). A linguistic approach (both morphological and semantical) has been adopted, although other disciplines have also been taken into account, in particular sociolinguistics. This is so because Legal English is the jargon (despectively dismissed as «legalese») of an elite whose job is the meting out of justice. The third part deals with translation but from a theoretical point of view. By making use of (mostly) pragmatic concepts. A framework has been established to account for as many meanings in the texts as possible. The fourth section contains texts and documents, as well as introductions in most cases, illustrative of the different areas of the Law (Housing Law, Criminal Law, etc). Special care has been taken to select a wide variety of texts and documents to allow readers to enjoy an overview of Legal English at work. This section is heavily annotated. These notes provide explanations and translations into Spanish of the most difficult words, expressions and concepts.

The book examines the impact of English in countries in wich it is taken for granted-Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and the USA. The book examines language and language-in-education policies in these countries and the extent to wich English influences some polices or prelude others. It explores the viability of a statement on national language policies that could be adopted by the International Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages [TESOL] organization as statement of principles.

Resumen: Anna Karenina is one of the most loved and memorable heroines of literature. Her overwhelming charm dominates a novel of unparalleled richness and density. Tolstoy considered this book to be his first real attempt at a novel form, and it addresses the very nature of society at all levels,- of destiny, death, human relationships and the irreconcilable contradictions of existence. It ends tragically, and there is much that evokes despair, yet set beside this is an abounding joy in life's many ephemeral pleasures, and a profusion of comic relief.

Resumen: Initially published under the pseudonym Currer Bell in 1847, Charlotte Brontës Jane Eyreerupted onto the English literary scene, immediately winning the devotion of many of the worlds most renowned writers, including William Makepeace Thackeray, who declared it a work of great genius. Widely regarded as a revolutionary novel, Brontës masterpiece introduced the world to a radical new type of heroine, one whose defiant virtue and moral courage departed sharply from the more acquiescent and malleable female characters of the day. Passionate, dramatic, and surprisingly modern, Jane Eyre endures as one of the worlds most beloved novels.

Resumen: As is widely known, Shakespeare was late to appear in Spain and did so through Jean-François Ducis ́s adaptations into French. The first Shakespearean text in Spanish, a translation of Hamlet carried out by the famous Spanish playwright Ramón de la Cruz, was not published until 1772, more than one and a half centuries after Shakespeare ́s death in 1616. This text, titled Hamleto, rey de Dinamarca, was based on Ducis ́s adaptation Hamlet, tragédie imitée de l ́anglois (1769). The second translation into Spanish of the Bard ́s work was another versión of Hamlet published in 1798 under this same title by Leandro Fernández de Moratín, also a famous Spanish playwright. Moratín translated directly from English. However, after this first direct translation of Shakespeare there was a succession of indirect versions from French, with only a few sporadic direct renderings.

Resumen: Is That a Fish in Your Ear? ranges across the whole of human experience, from foreign films to philosophy, to show why translation is at the heart of what we do and who we are. Among many other things, David Bellos asks: What's the difference between translating unprepared natural speech and translating Madame Bovary? How do you translate a joke? What's the difference between a native tongue and a learned one? Can you translate between any pair of languages, or only between some? What really goes on when world leaders speak at the UN? Can machines ever replace human translators, and if not, why? But the biggest question Bellos asks is this: How do we ever really know that we've understood what anybody else says-in our own language or in another? This book is all about how we comprehend other people and shows us how, ultimately, translation is another name for the human condition.
