Resumen: Intonation of colloquial English (British English) has been written for language students at intermediate to advanced level and for 1st year university students of phonetics. The authors analyse the intonation of English into a system of ten tone groups which, with their functions, are described in the early chapters of the book. Then comes an extensive series of practice drills with each tone group treated separately and in certain common tone group sequences: the functions of each tone group are made evident by means of Verbal Contexts which precede the drill sentences. Finally there is a number of dialogues demonstrating the ten tone groups in action within the framework of everyday conversational speech.

Resumen: The Interpretive Theory of Translation has been produced by the Paris School (i.e. researchers of the Ecole Supérieure d'Interprètes et de Traducteurs -ESIT- at Université Paris III- Sorbonne Nouvelle). I shall give there only a brief outline of that theory. For closer scrutiny, interested readers will kindly refer to the list of relevant literature appended. Translating will be accepted by everyone as meaning understanding a text and rewording that understanding in a different language. Theoretically, translating requires a fautless command of the source and target languages, a deep insight into the subject matter dealt with in the text and a correct methodology to carry out the translating process.

Resumen: No existen suficientes trabajos lexicográficos o terminográficos que resuelvan todas las dudas del traductor de textos financieros. En este artículo se afirma que existe, entre la documentación y la terminología, una relación de necesidad bilateral evidente que se observa, fundamentalmente, en las vertientes aplicadas de ambas disciplinas. Las autoras concluyen: «... como vemos, todos los términos esconden algo, y el contexto de uso es fundamental para determinar qué quieren comunicar en esta oportunidad. La documentación sigue siendo nuestra mejor aliada a la hora de traducir». Este interesante trabajo es fruto de la decisión de la Comisión de Terminología de avanzar en el análisis de ciertos términos que, sin formar un glosario, son estudiados en profundidad para que su correcto uso sea de utilidad para todos los colegas.

Resumen: La opinión de los autores, informáticos, es que hay que proteger el idioma. Hay una tendencia a pensar que las palabras extranjeras visten más o que alguien es más entendido si las usa. Pero en realidad se cae en la pedantería. Por eso desde el ámbito técnico se debe fomentar el uso de los términos españoles. Si no existiera un término equivalente se debería crear, utilizando las técnicas anteriormente descritas u otras similares. Si conseguimos que en el campo técnico traduzcamos correctamente, quizás se pueda influir en este ámbito. El que quiere dedicarse a la traducción de la informática debe saber inglés aunque traduzca del francés al español.

Resumen: Born in Buenos Aires, María Teresa lived in the United States, where she obtained her Master of Arts degree in Teaching English as a Second Language at Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU). After obtaining her Master's degree she also taught two courses, Note-taking Skills and Analyzing & Writing Arguments, at the Center for English Language Programs at HPU. María Teresa returned to her native Buenos Aires in 2006, where she taught English in public and private educational institutions at the university, high school and grade school levels. She is the founder and director of her own language center, Lingualandcenter Associated with Linguarama, mainly devoted to individual and group language training programs. She currently works as an English professor at Universidad de la Marina Mercante and conducts various teacher-training courses for translators at the Colegio de Traductores Públicos de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. She is also a free-lance translator and works as an interpreter in the law-court system.

Resumen: "The concept of the meme comes from genetics: it is the cultural equivalent of a gene. The term was introduced by Dawkins in his best-seller The selfish gene (1976]). In one of his chapters he discusses how cultural phenomena can be studied in the same way as genetic ones, in that both are subject to the same Darwinian laws of natural selection. He proposes "meme" as a term to describe the evolution of cultural phenomena. A meme is a unit of cultural transmission, a unit of imitation. (...) If a scientist hears, or reads about, a good idea, he passes it on to his colleagues and students. If the idea catches on, it can be said to propagate itself, spreading from brain to brain. (Dawkins 1976)".
