Resumen: El siguiente artículo tiene como finalidad presentar las diferentes teorías sobre el análisis de la entonación del inglés que les son de gran utilidad a los estudiantes de las carreras universitarias afines a este idioma. Este trabajo recorre los aspectos fundamentales del estudio de la entonación y ofrece ejemplos claros para que se puedan apreciar sus funciones en el contexto discursivo. Asimismo, el propósito del artículo es proveer de herramientas a los futuros traductores e intérpretes que los puedan ayudar a entender la forma en la que el lenguaje funciona en una manera comunicativa y de interacción. Para lograrlo, se debe tener en cuenta no sólo las palabras y los enunciados sino también las intenciones, las actitudes y los significados pragmáticos que van más allá de los aspectos lexicales y estructurales. Ser capaces de entender las funciones y los usos de la entonación del idioma inglés es de vital importancia para que los futuros profesionales decodifiquen los significados de sus interlocutores y, a su vez, les otorgue herramientas para que ellos mismos se comuniquen en el idioma extranjero de una manera precisa, clara, inteligible y comunicativa.

Resumen: Uno de los objetivos de la Comisión de Idioma Inglés es explorar los usos y las costumbres de diferentes comunidades angloparlantes. Dada la gran comunidad irlandesa que se estableció en la Argentina en el siglo xix y los estrechos lazos construidos desde entonces, la Comisión decidió realizarle una entrevista a un descendiente de los inmigrantes irlandeses. En esta entrevista, Eduardo Clancy, arquitecto y miembro de la Junta de Estudios Históricos de San Antonio de Areco, en la provincia de Buenos Aires, nos cuenta cómo llegó la comunidad irlandesa a la Argentina, dónde se establecieron y cuáles eran sus ocupaciones y costumbres. ¿Habrán podido conservar el idioma inglés como parte de su cultura?

Resumen: This article provides a critical overview of recent research on cross-cultural divergences between English, French and German academic writing, demonstrating its relevance to translation. The author starts by discussing Galtung’s notion of culture-specific intellectual styles. He then explores the relationship between composition teaching and writing style. This is followed by a detailed discussion of cross-language comparisons of various text types which lend evidence to significant differences between the linguacultures under survey. The resultant plurality of linguacultures, the author goes on to argue, must be preserved as a value in itself, and merits special attention on the part of the translator

Resumen: Cuando Fernando Pessoa se decide a publicar, en 1918, sus primeros libros de versos en lengua inglesa –35 Sonnets y Antinous–, ya es un poeta completamente maduro, con treinta años de edad y con una teoría literaria perfectamente elaborada, desde los artículos de la revista A Águia, en 1912, sobre la nueva poesía portuguesa, hasta el Ultimátum de 1917, publicado en Portugal Futurista, donde desarrolla algunas de sus ideas estéticas, entre ellas la tesis de la despersonalización en el arte. Toda una serie de escuelas o movimientos han sido ya fraguados: paulismo, interseccionismo, sensacionismo, neopaganismo, neoclasicismo. A veces, unos principios programáticos entran en franca contradicción con otros. El espíritu antitético, paradójico, de Fernando Pessoa ha de ser tenido en cuenta a la hora de enjuiciar tanto su obra literaria como su doctrina estética. El propio Pessoa llega a decir de sí mismo: «Si alguna vez soy coherente, es sólo como incoherencia de la incoherencia».

Resumen: Dada la demanda de trabajos de traducción destinados al público hispanohablante en los EE. UU. en lo tocante al ámbito de la salud, la traducción de documentos médico-jurídicos, como los consentimientos informados, exponen al traductor a un desafío lingüístico multidisciplinario donde no sólo se requiere el conocimiento de la terminología específica de las distintas áreas temáticas afines, sino que, además, es fundamental su familiarización con los principios, el propósito y las distintas formas de presentación de dicho material. En esta presentación, procuraré transmitir la lógica del consentimiento informado, sus componentes y resultados esperados, para que el traductor componga un cuadro mental precedente a la traducción, que le sirva como esquema para una investigación productiva y un trabajo satisfactorio y eficaz.

Resumen: En esta charla, el docente investigador magíster Juan Luis Stamboni nos cuenta detalles sobre su tarea de investigación en el campo de la lingüística y comenta su enfoque teórico y su mirada acerca de la actualidad del habla local. Además, nos advierte con respecto a la inexactitud de las definiciones de los diccionarios, las diferencias léxico-sintácticas entre lenguas romances y sajonas, y el papel que debería tener la gramática en la educación básica en nuestro país. «Los hablantes argentinos actuales muestran vacilación respecto de la corrección de muchas de las expresiones lingüísticas que emiten [...]. Las escuelas deberían impartir gramática», afirma.
