Resumen: "This presentation aims at showing the similarities and differences between translating and interpreting. From the viewpoint of the Interpretive Theory of Translation, developed at the ESIT (University of Paris III - Sorbonne Nouvelle), it shows that while sharing a common theoretical foundation, the two processes have different operational constraints. Important implications for translator and interpreter training resulting from these operational differences will then discussed"!.

Resumen: "The ideas discussed in this paper explore the important role as agents of social change that translators are called upon to play in this new century. 1-Translation as an agent of cultural development, since effective translation bridges the gap between cultures, not merely words. 2- Translation as a promoter of economic growth, given the boom in international trade and the dramatic rise in the demand for translation. 3- The role of higher education institutions as harbingers of change and generators of integration through innovative translation programmes. These issues will be analysed in the context of Mercosur countries, with a special emphasis on Brazil and Argentina".

Resumen: "There has always been an unsettled debate between proponents of a theory-free practice of translation and those who believe that theory is an integral part of translators' training. The arguments the initial group provides relate to the fact that translators simply are able to conduct translations without having to rely on theoretical views which they say in most cases make their task even more complex, these views themselves, they say, are single-minded, hindered, untested; not to mention those highly controversial ones. Theory proponents on the other hand, are adamant that a translator should know about experts' views on matters related to translation. If this does not make them carry out their job with greater success, they insist, it will at least provide them with nvaluable insights about a number of nuances related to the practice. So, how relevant is 'theory' in translation?".

Resumen: "The Benny Hill Show and Sex and the City are two famous programs from different countries: one from Great Britain, the other from the United States. They do not share the same kind of humor, although their humor was considered "vulgar" when they were first shown on TV. This paper will try to answer questions such as how those differences and similarities affect the subtitling, how we should analyze this type of discourse, what kind of references translators face when subtitling humor, and so on. Examples taken from both shows will be included to illustrate the theoretical concepts".

Resumen: "With reference to translations of Dante's Divine Comedy in Spanish, French, Latin, English, German, and Chinese, as well as translations of Shakespeare's Macbeth in Italian, this paper discusses musicality as the most recalcitrant of all features in a source-language text, and attempts to show how, depending on factors to be examined in detail, intrafamily translation, that is, translation between languages of the same family, can capture the original music with varying degrees of success".

Resumen: "The concept of the meme comes from genetics: it is the cultural equivalent of a gene. The term was introduced by Dawkins in his best-seller The selfish gene (1976]). In one of his chapters he discusses how cultural phenomena can be studied in the same way as genetic ones, in that both are subject to the same Darwinian laws of natural selection. He proposes "meme" as a term to describe the evolution of cultural phenomena. A meme is a unit of cultural transmission, a unit of imitation. (...) If a scientist hears, or reads about, a good idea, he passes it on to his colleagues and students. If the idea catches on, it can be said to propagate itself, spreading from brain to brain. (Dawkins 1976)".
