Resumen: The cross-cultural pragmatics literature has paid considerable attention to the various strategies that speakers deploy when performing the speech act of requesting. This is because the degree of imposition that making a request places upon one's interlocutor(s) has been seen to be subject to cross-gender and cross-linguistic/cultural variation in terms of use and interpretation. To our knowledge, however, there are virtually no contrastive studies on Peninsular Spanish and British English within this field. Wanting to address this, and whilst acknowledging the limitations of discourse completion tests (DCTs), we employed one such test as a suitable tool for obtaining a large amount of data from male and female Spanish and British undergraduates (aged 19-25). The data was analyzed and treated not as authentic speech/discourse but as reflecting informants' perceptions and beliefs about appropriate linguistic behaviour in the performance of requests in different situations controlled for power and social distance. Thus, ours is a pragmatic approach that attempts to account for these perceptions and beliefs, which are included in the "assumptions about social roles, positions, rights and obligations [that] are part of the (usually unstated) background knowledge that is routinely brought to bear on the interpretation of utterances" (Cameron 1998: 445).

Resumen: Durante el VI Congreso Latinoamericano de Traducción e Interpretación realizado en abril de este año, tuvimos el placer de contar con la presencia de un invitado de lujo, Chris Kunz, quien se desempeña como docente en enseñanza de inglés como segunda lengua y lengua extranjera en la Argentina, Australia y el Reino Unido desde hace más de veinte años. Su presentación en el VI Congreso y su taller impartido en mayo fueron muy concurridos, pero todos nos quedamos con ganas de más. Por eso, desde la Comisión de Idioma Inglés queremos acercarles una entrevista mano a mano con Chris para conocer sus puntos de vista sobre la fonética inglesa y enseñanza del idioma inglés.

"The very first job I did, the very first thing I published, was a translation from an old Norse text, an old Icelandic saga, a runic saga, and that task of translation was an eye-opener to me about the difficulties that are involved in translation. Because here I was, translating a work that had been written a thousand years before in a very very different society, and having to put it into an English that the late 20th. century British and American readers would understand, while at the same time trying to capture some of the social and political mores, and literaty mores, of the time en which the runic saga was written".
