Resumen: El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la práctica de la interpretación simultánea por parte del intérprete de conferencias "freelance", con la idea de subrayar las dificultades que su trabajo conlleva y que son el resultado tanto de las limitaciones que la propia interpretación simultánea plantea como de la naturaleza específica de ese mercado. Se define de interpretación simultánea como una actividad caracterizada por la necesidad de solucionar problemas y, por tanto de asumir riesgos, dado el proceso constante de toma de decisiones al que se ve sometido el intérprete.

Resumen: La falta o carencia de información en lo concerniente al rol del intérprete se debe, en gran medida, a la distorsionada idea que se tiene de la tarea de interpretar y de lo que significa traducir. La interpretación de conferencias y la traducción son dos profesiones liberales cuya práctica no tiene nada que ver ni con la enseñanza de idiomas ni con el bilingüismo o el dominio de las lenguas. El objeto de esta obra es brindar una introducción sobre las condiciones y las exigencias que se requieren para formarse en esta profesión, y ofrecer a docentes, formadores y alumnos una base y guía para facilitar su estudio.

Resumen: This groundbreaking study explores Simultaneous Conference Interpreting (SI) by focusing on interpreters as professionals working in socio-cultural contexts and on the interdependency between these contexts and actual SI behavior. While previous research on SI has been dominated by cognitive and psycholinguistic approaches, Diriker's work explores SI in relation to the broader and more immediate socio-cultural contexts by investigating the representation of the profession(al) in the meta-discourse and by exploring the presence of interpreters and the nature of the interpreted utterance at an actual conference. Making use of participant observations, interviews and analysis of conference transcripts, Diriker challenges some of the widely held assumptions about SI. She suggests that the interpreter's delivery represents not only the speaker but a multiplicity of speaker-positions, and that this multiplicity may well be a source of tension or vulnerability, as well as strength, for interpreters. Her analysis also highlights how interpreters negotiate meaning in SI, and underscores the need for more concerted efforts to explore SI in authentic contexts.
