Resumen: El propósito de esta exposición es describir brevemente las características de un mercado laboral para los traductores, el de las organizaciones internacionales, en particular las Naciones Unidas, sus organismos especializados y las organizaciones que constituyen lo que se conoce como el "sistema de las Naciones Unidas". Las organizaciones internacionales, desde la Sociedad de las Naciones, establecida después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, han de ser forzosamente multilingües y por lo tanto requieren los servicios profesionales de traductores e intérpretes. En la Unión Europea, que actualmente cuenta con 27 Estados Miembros, hay 23 idiomas oficiales. En las Naciones Unidas, con 192 Estados Miembros, los idiomas oficiales son seis: el árabe (que es el incorporado más recientemente, en 1973), el chino, el español, el francés, el inglés y el ruso. Esto significa que los documentos oficiales de la Organización se publican en los seis idiomas y que las deliberaciones de los órganos principales cuentan con interpretación simultánea a esos mismos idiomas.

Resumen: Esta obra trata sobre la traducción simultánea y constituye, en sí una contribución importante a la comprensión de esta materia. Pero la obra tiene un alcance mayor: el estudio riguroso de una actividad específica, la interpretación, va a servir de revelador de las operaciones congnitivas de la vida cotidiana, ésas que tanto nos cuesta detectar directamente por encontrarse, precisamente, distribuidas en forma universal. Para que se produzca esta revelación hay que actuar en dos tiempos: destruir primero la imagen social simplista de la traducción como transferencia casi automática de un código a otro, y recomponer luego la actividad en profundidad, aferrándola a los esquemas cognitivos más generales que ella misma pone en evidencia. Entre sus capítulos se destacan: Mas acá y mas allá de las palabras [en el cual se pone de manifiesto la importancia de la identidad del orador y de la presencia del intérprete], El papel de intérprete [donde se establecen las diferencias de aproximación al discurso entre el intérprete, el psicoanalista y el actor] y las interferencias [en el que se señala que las interferencias entre dos lenguas y los lapsus dentro de un idioma funcionan según las mismas reglas de articulación].

Resumen: This project will attempt to shed light on the practice of interpretation into the non-native language in Argentina. An overview of my home country's market situation and the need for Argentine interpreters to work into English will give the reader an opportunity to better understand the issue at hand. The problems derivered from interpreting into English will then be analyzed. Questions such as quality, training, ethics and theoretical aspects of interpreting into English form part of this effort of taking a closer look at the market I work in. This paper is a summary of a longer work presented in 1998 at the Monterey Institute of International studies in partial fulfillment of graduation requirements.

Resumen: La traduction et l’interprétation en milieu judiciaire sont deux pratiques différentes exercées dans un même domaine, celui de la justice. Nous examinons ici la situation des experts traducteurs-interprètes. La justice française d’aujourd’hui est une justice dans l’urgence (Bastard et Mouhanna, 2007). Le traducteur doit en être bien conscient lorsqu’il reçoit une demande. Certains actes sont particulièrement urgents, notamment les mandats d’arrêt européen ou d’extradition, les ordonnances et les commissions rogatoires internationales de juges d’instruction qui sont à exécuter rapidement pour permettre l’avancement de la procédure, d’autant plus lorsque les personnes concernées se trouvent en détention provisoire.

Resumen: Simultaneous interpreting (SI) is a highly complex cognitive process which aims to deliver a complete and accurate rendition of the original message in real time. However, there is a myriad of factors that can influence the process, speed being one of the factors most frequently put forward by practising interpreters as a major challenge. Against this background, we, who are professional interpreters at the United Nations and in the private market, and have observed that speed has become an increasingly present challenge in our work, have carried out an experimental study with the aim of elucidating one of the strategies that expert interpreters resort to when confronted with different speed rates, namely the omission of redundant information. Ten professional interpreters from the United Nations were asked to simultaneously interpret three speeches, which were written to be read and were of similar lexical density, at different speeds. The findings indicate that at higher speeds interpreters omit more redundant information, and it would appear that omission is a strategy the interpreter resorts to for coping with speed.

Resumen: Este libro ofrece una guía útil no sólo para intérpretes y traductores deseosos de reflexionar sobre su propia actividad sino también para todos aquellos que se interesan en los procesos cognitivos, el análisis del discurso y el procesamiento emocional. La comparación detallada de pequeños fragmentos discursivos en su versión original e interpretada revela algunos mecanismos del funcionamiento del lenguaje y de nuestros procesos mentales, difíciles de detectar en otros contextos. La aplicación de dicho conocimiento a otras áreas amplía el alcance y la perspectiva de los mismos y permite plantear el uso crítico y creativo del lenguaje como una llave importante de desarrollo y educación.

Resumen: La interpretación se centra en las ideas expresadas oralmente y apunta a la comunicación integral del significado. El intérprete, mediador entre el hablante y el oyente, realiza simultáneamente dos funciones independientes entre sí, hablar y comprender. Dentro de los diversos factores que intervienen en el proceso de comprensión y transmisión del mensaje oral, merecen destacarse el conocimiento competente de L1 y de L2, la capacidad innata o entrenada para la captación inmediata de la información y, fundamentalmente, el conocimiento extralingüístico. En su tarea profesional, el intérprete está comprometido en un proceso continuo de solución de problemas y toma de decisiones y cuanto mayor sea su bagaje de conocimientos previos, más automático será este proceso. La memoria inmediata permite segmentar el mensaje oral en unidades de sentido que se pueden recordar en forma inmediata, mientras que la permanente posibilita la recuperación de información almacenada en la mente. De ahí que la memoria, junto con la comprensión y el conocimiento previo constituyen aspectos inseparables a tener en cuenta en el entrenamiento de un buen intérprete.

Resumen: This groundbreaking study explores Simultaneous Conference Interpreting (SI) by focusing on interpreters as professionals working in socio-cultural contexts and on the interdependency between these contexts and actual SI behavior. While previous research on SI has been dominated by cognitive and psycholinguistic approaches, Diriker's work explores SI in relation to the broader and more immediate socio-cultural contexts by investigating the representation of the profession(al) in the meta-discourse and by exploring the presence of interpreters and the nature of the interpreted utterance at an actual conference. Making use of participant observations, interviews and analysis of conference transcripts, Diriker challenges some of the widely held assumptions about SI. She suggests that the interpreter's delivery represents not only the speaker but a multiplicity of speaker-positions, and that this multiplicity may well be a source of tension or vulnerability, as well as strength, for interpreters. Her analysis also highlights how interpreters negotiate meaning in SI, and underscores the need for more concerted efforts to explore SI in authentic contexts.

Resumen: Interpreting, the human activity of translating oral discourse between two languages, has existed since times immemorial. As a professional activity per se, however, it is less than a century old. It dates back to the end of World War I, at the Paris conferences held in 1918, which resulted in the Treaty of Versailles and the establishment of the League of Nations. The first professional interpreters were all self-taught, but with the development of the profession and the advent of more international meetings, interpreter training began to be considered an important activity to prepare future interpreters better and faster. The first school dedicated exclusively to the training of interpreters was founded in Geneva, in 1941, by Antoine Velleman, an interpreter at the League of Nations (BOWEN e BOWEN, 1984). Many other appeared in the following decades.
