Resumen: El propósito de esta exposición es describir brevemente las características de un mercado laboral para los traductores, el de las organizaciones internacionales, en particular las Naciones Unidas, sus organismos especializados y las organizaciones que constituyen lo que se conoce como el "sistema de las Naciones Unidas". Las organizaciones internacionales, desde la Sociedad de las Naciones, establecida después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, han de ser forzosamente multilingües y por lo tanto requieren los servicios profesionales de traductores e intérpretes. En la Unión Europea, que actualmente cuenta con 27 Estados Miembros, hay 23 idiomas oficiales. En las Naciones Unidas, con 192 Estados Miembros, los idiomas oficiales son seis: el árabe (que es el incorporado más recientemente, en 1973), el chino, el español, el francés, el inglés y el ruso. Esto significa que los documentos oficiales de la Organización se publican en los seis idiomas y que las deliberaciones de los órganos principales cuentan con interpretación simultánea a esos mismos idiomas.

Resumen: This book deals with the history and the collective memory of a group of professionals work in the most universal organisation of the international political system. Combining the reflections of the historian and the interpreter, the research is based on original documents, the press and oral testimonies. It should be read as an essay, revolving round temporal and linear axis of the period of history it covers- from the creation of the United Nations in 1945 to the present days. This is the period of the consolidation of the profession of conference interpreter as we know it today, and the United Nations serves as a testing ground and a mirror of has happened throughout the almost sixty years" existence of the Organitation. The evolution of political and diplomatic relations has had an impact in the interpreters" profile. Now, interpreters do not come into the profession by chance, as they did in the past, but through training in specialised schools. What was seen as a phenomenon has become a profession.

Resumen: Simultaneous interpreting (SI) is a highly complex cognitive process which aims to deliver a complete and accurate rendition of the original message in real time. However, there is a myriad of factors that can influence the process, speed being one of the factors most frequently put forward by practising interpreters as a major challenge. Against this background, we, who are professional interpreters at the United Nations and in the private market, and have observed that speed has become an increasingly present challenge in our work, have carried out an experimental study with the aim of elucidating one of the strategies that expert interpreters resort to when confronted with different speed rates, namely the omission of redundant information. Ten professional interpreters from the United Nations were asked to simultaneously interpret three speeches, which were written to be read and were of similar lexical density, at different speeds. The findings indicate that at higher speeds interpreters omit more redundant information, and it would appear that omission is a strategy the interpreter resorts to for coping with speed.
