Resumen: The starting point of the present article lies in a question posed by Raymond Federman in a well-known essay on Texts for Nothing: "What form can fiction take when it encounters everywhere nothing but verbal dust?" (Federman 2001:?161). Any critical description of this collection of Beckett's short pieces points to the worn-out quality of the language, as if the process of negation had deeply affected style with the result of having a text in its final stages of decomposition, of being the remnants of a conscience in the process of dissolution. Apropos of a new translation into Spanish of Texts for Nothing / Textos para nada (2015), the author of the new version wants to reflect on the impossibility of translating words that seem to be so fragile and exhausted that the act of moving them to another language would necessarily entail the definitive shattering into pieces of an already thin fabric of words. The questions that will be addressed are related to the theoretical framework needed to handle this frail material: How can the translator negotiate the conflicting meaning of words without reinforcing its inconsistency even further? By which mechanisms can a translator of Texts for nothing support his/her work considering, in the words of Hannelore Fahrenback and John Fletcher, "the ghostly dimension of space/time inhabited by this disembodied voice"? (Fahrenback and Fletcher 1976)

Resumen: Este trabajo aborda uno de los aspectos fundamentales de la narrativa de la novelista británica Jane Austen: su especial uso del lenguaje; aspecto que, no obstante, ha recibido escasa atención investigadora. Asimismo, se analizan los términos y elementos más significativos de su obra, así como diversas traducciones que para ellos proponen algunos traductores. Se presta especial atención a los vocablos que plantean dificultades de comprensión, tanto en su lengua de origen como en su trasvase al español. Entre las razones que explican esta dificultad no solo se encuentra el cambio de significado, propiciado por el irremediable paso del tiempo en la lengua, sino también el personal uso que Austen hacía del idioma, el cual empleaba de forma precisa y, en muchas ocasiones, con una función caracterizadora de personajes.

Resumen: Georges Perec, en su novela "La disparition", prescinde por completo de la letra "e", "Never Again", de Doug Nufer, no repite ninguna palabra. Estos fenómenos no son casuales, sino que responden al esfuerzo consciente de sus escritores. "Alphabetical Africa" (1974) de Walter Abish, al igual que estas obras literarias, presenta un elemento lúdico, aunque en este caso se trata de un juego que, además de afectar al grado de expresividad, estructura la novela por completo. Las tres obras citadas dan ya en su título una pista del juego que encierran y son claros ejemplos de restricción creativa en la literatura.

Resumen: The paper examines sound schemes in Arabic original poetic prose and English translation. These are reverse rhyme, rhyme, pararhyme and consonance. Looked at from the vantage point of sound symbolism, an attempt is made to verify their expressive and thematic functions in ST. In some cases, the concept has apparently been proven applicable and the claims made in this regard are plausible. As to the interlingual patterns of sound symbolism, the study has come to the conclusion that ST and TT diverge when it comes to how onomatopoeic elements evoke meaning. The strategic decisions taken by translators in addressing translation problems depend largely on how sensitive they are towards the ST phonic aspect and affiliations. They employ compensation in kind and in place whenever and wherever that is felt to be required, hence, replacing ST phonological recurrence with morphological and lexical ones. These higher-level devices are but one means of achieving parallel effects in the TT. However, consonance is regularly used as a prime solution for the problem of equivalence. It is axiomatic that in any attempt of translation a certain degree of loss is expected in terms of failure to relay the ST message content intact. Another kind of damage consists in the impossibility of rendering ST scripts into TT. The significance of Arabic letters to the readers of Arabic will definitely be mismatched in the TT as they imply culturally broader connotations and allusions to the Islamic heritage. The graphological input to the message in the Arabic text will hardly be imparted by the TT Roman script.

Resumen: Although fuzziness is one of the innate characteristics of language, shared by both Chinese and English, there do exist apparent differentiations between them as far as their roles in aesthetic-effect-generating, representation mode, application field suitability and aesthetic impact are concerned, which has remained a great challenge and regret in either English to Chinese (E-C) or Chinese to English (C-E) translation, particularly in the latter. It's no exaggeration to say that translation is a profession with no lack of regret and translators are professional regret-tasters. The most impressive regret in C-E translation might lie in the fact that the talent and capability of the translators is painfully restricted in reproducing and conveying the aesthetic effect of Chinese fuzzy expressions. As an artistically conceived language, Chinese invites macro-induction in terms of linguistic features while English, being logic-oriented, analysis-based and hypotaxis-dependent, is largely ignorant of what is called macro-induction. Hence abundant aesthetic genius of Chinese fuzzy expressions can hardly find its way into the English version. It can be said that generally the process of C-E translation is one of complementing continuously "meaning blank", of changing "indeterminacy of meaning" into "determinacy of meaning", with the E-C translation as the opposite. Many language problems in communication are essentially closely related to nationality psychologic archetype complex, which may be a significant try in translation study.

Resumen: his paper argues that since in general, it is inadvisable for translation to disregard the possible unintelligibility of the text, a web of significance or signification must be reproduced irrespective of seemingly insurmountable translation difficulties. Interpretation is related to the issues of cultural translation and (un)translatability in cultural terms, necessitating a clutch of interpretative modes prior to the effective formulation of appropriate translation strategies. Temporal and cultural gaps tend to create difficulties in interpretation, and cultural pluralism may lead to multiple, hence different, interpretations. Principally because of translation, we have progressed into the age of multiculturalism, and it is not just that the necessity of acculturation seems to be diminishing, but there is a real desire to spurn it. Foreignization is a political issue. Accordingly, the tensions of ideological incommensurability need to be dissipated in order to facilitate cross-cultural understanding and communication. A degree of ideological pluralism permits cultural diversity distinctively marked by tolerance of difference and attempts to reduce an underlying distrust of the foreign. Multiculturalism, however, by no means denotes the demise of ideology. In spite of its ostensible theoretical naivety, intentionalism has some serious implications for the translator, who may ignore at his/her own peril, for instance, the complex ideological consciousness that informs not only the source text but also the resulting target text. If we say that both the author and the reader are responsible for context or its construction, then the translator must play the double role of reader and author in the sense of (re)constructing context. While we interpret with many aims, the act of interpretation is culturally and ideologically conditioned, and the ensuing complicated remapping is such that translation is always somewhat adrift

Resumen: El mundo de la pobreza y de la marginación ha estado siempre presente de uno u otro modo, y en proporción variable en la literatura inglesa; sin embargo, este problema adquiere los tintes más fuertes a lo largo del siglo XIX. Esta literatura de carácter marcadamente documental, sobre todo, en lo que se refiere a expresión del submundo de la marginación generada por la decadencia de los viejos centros urbanos, como consecuencia del desplazamiento de la actividad industrial al norte de Inglaterra, alcanza su punto álgido en la segunda mitad de la década de los treinta y se manifiesta en las Newgate Novels. El surgimiento de este subgénero, como ocurre en cualquier innovación literaria, implica la incorporación de nuevas técnicas y de nuevos lenguajes y registros que la crítica ha de explorar y valorar en su justa medida.

Resumen: La investigación que se está llevando a cabo sobre la obra japonesa Oku no hosomichi de Matsuo Basho parte de la constatación del gran número y diversidad de discrepancias que se observan a poco que se lean con detenimiento algunas traducciones occidentales de la misma. Ante dicha profusión se ha realizado una selección de anomalías que dan pie a plantearse problemas concretos de traducción del japonés a las lenguas en general occidentales y concretamente inglesa, francesa y española.

Resumen: Toda producción intelectual o artística está ligada a los condicionamientos culturales de su época. La traducción literaria no es excepción: como actividad productora de textos, se ve afectada por los factores culturales, la visión del mundo de una determinada sociedad, los modelos textuales ofrecidos por esa sociedad, la orientación hacia textos ya aceptados y el discurso que comparten el escritor y el lector. Theo D'Haen presenta varios casos en que los condicionamientos culturales explican traducciones dispares de una misma obra clásica, como el Julio César de Sahkespeare, realizadas en diversos países y épocas. Dichos casos parecen confirmar la idea de que la escritura o la traducción no son completas sin el concurso del lector y la sanción de la sociedad para los que se escribe o traduce. Ahora bien, la traducción de textos clásicos, al realizarse sobre supuestos culturales que no suelen coincidir con los de la época del autor, corre el riesgo de desvirtuar el original si no respeta la lectura que éste exige.

Resumen: "(...) Vamos a emprender un estudio de una obra africana, L'Ex-père de la nation, de Aminata Sow Fall, aplicando los pensamientos sobre la traducción de Benjamin (a través de las lecturas e interpretaciones de Carol Jacobs y Paul de Man). Sow Fall es una escritora senegalesa y ésta es su cuarta obra. Todos sus trabajos versan sobre la sociedad contemporánea africana y sobre el choque entre las prácticas tradicionales y las corrientes modernizadoras de las naciones en vías de industrialización. En The Former Father of the Nation (traducción al inglés de la obra), Madiama, un hombre normal y honrado, ha accedido a la presidencia de su país por aclamación popular. Aunque sus intenciones son buenas, no posee la habilidad maquiavélica para tratar con sus consejeros hambrientos de poder ni la capacidad necesaria para sacar a su país de la situación económica que ha heredado. La historia es, pues, una crónica del fracaso de un gobernante desinteresado".

Resumen: Con motivo del IV Centenario de la publicación de la famosa novela de Miguel de Cervantes, este artículo ha querido acercarnos las traducciones al inglés que se han realizada de esta obra en estos cuatro siglos. Su principal objetivo es investigar cómo habían resuelto los traductores de diferentes épocas las dificultades que presenta la obra y si, como ocurre en otras ocasiones, los traductores más recientes se habían basado en los traductores precedentes. Gracias a la investigación realizada se ha tomado conciencia de la repercusión a escala internacional de "El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha". Este estudio pretende brindar la oportunidad de acercar al lector a diferentes traducciones y de comprobar la evolución que han experimentado los patrones de traducción a lo largo de los siglos.
