Resumen: Los espectadores de cine perciben la información en las películas mediante la imagen y el sonido. En el presente trabajo se analiza un aspecto concreto de este último sistema en la película de "Sense and Sensibility" dirigida por Ang Lee en 1995 con guión de Emma Thompson: la traducción de las estrategias de cortesía según el modelo pragmático de Browm y Levinson. Como paso previo se considera necesario no obstante resumir algunos problemas básicos de la "traducción subordinada" (Constrained translation) nomenclatura inglesa con la que se denomina principalmente a la traducción cinematopográfica en sus dos acepciones fundamentales, el subtitulado y el doblaje

Resumen: "(...) efectuaremos un breve análisis de distintas escenas correspondientes a largometrajes extranjeros subtitulados o doblados al español, en el que describiremos el efecto de estos procedimientos de traducción [domesticación y extranjerización] sobre los nombres propios, los alimentos, el humor, los juegos de palabras, así como sobre elementos de carácter ideológico, como los estereotipos sexuales y las identidades nacionales".

Resumen: Voice-over as an audiovisual translation modality has traditionally been described for its rendering of the truth or its faithfulness. The manipulation and deviation from the original text through translation has already been the object of study in documentaries. This paper looks at the translation of TV news through voice-over. Technical and content infidelities are rendering the broadcast actualities into sexed up copies of the original, which for all intents and purposes are in sheer contravention of what translation is for as a faithful reproduction of the original and of objective and factual news reporting. The effects of the translator's visibility in news voice-over is re-examined and the physical presence of the translator/voice talent is analyzed. This paper argues that the visibility of the translator in this instance pushes the boundaries of mediation beyond mere technicalities towards a sociopolitical sphere of reasoning and rationality by editorial policy makers. The paper also argues that synchronicity of voice-overs stemming from the rhetorical features of the voice-over styles of delivery and the idiosyncrasies of the voices creates dissonance and renders the original message with a degree of infelicities that undermine the long-celebrated standards of objectivity and neutrality. Consequently, this paper underscores the invisibility of the translator in this mode of translation mediation.

Resumen: Este manual, partiendo de la experiencia del autor en la traducción no oficial de videojuegos como Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VI o Phantasy Star IV, tiene como objetivo explicar técnicas para descifrar los entresijos de las ROMs de emuladores con el fin de traducirlas a otra lengua. De este modo, el lector que ponga en práctica la metodología descrita no sólo se sentirá satisfecho de ver su videojuego preferido en su idioma, sino que permitirá que otros aficionados desconocedores de la lengua de origen del videojuego puedan, también, disfrutar de la traducción.

Resumen: Film translation in China began as early as 1949 and has been developing very fast. This article aims at providing an overview of the current situation of film translation in China and explores the two major types of English-Chinese film translation: dubbing and subtitling. Therefore, it can be roughly divided into two parts. The first part constitutes a general background for the study of film translation. The author of this article first discusses film's origin and nature, the features of film language and the classification of film translation. Of the four categories of film translation (subtitling, lip-sync dubbing, narration, and free-commentary), dubbing and subtitling are the main forms used in China. Then the differences between the two types and social preference for them are analyzed. The author also presents a summary of film translation's development and current studies on this topic. The second part probes into the details of dubbing and subtitling. This article investigates the features and technical constraints of dubbing and subtitling. The main techniques adopted in practice are illustrated through specific examples. Both forms have their relative advantages and disadvantages. In subtitling, standardization and simplification are its two important techniques. Standardization is concerned with the transfer of text mode - from spoken text to written text, while simplification is related to the technical constraints in subtitling, namely spatial and temporal constraints. In dubbing, the translator should make his translation fit into the pictures and synchronize the lines and the pictures, so lip synchronization, gestures and pauses are the major constraints in dubbing. As the two main forms of film translation in China, dubbing and subtitling coexist and compete with each other in the market.

Resumen: Audiovisual Translation in a Global Context offers an up-to-date survey of the field of Audiovisual Translation (AVT). One of the main aims of the book is to document the changes taking place in this thriving discipline, by focusing not only on current projects and research being carried out in AVT but also on the professional practice in a wide range of contexts. The contributors to the collection cover a wide array of topics from subtitling, dubbing, and voiceover, to media accessibility practices like sign language, subtitling for the deaf and the hard of hearing, and audio description for the blind and visually impaired. In an accessible and engaging manner, the chapters discuss theoretical issues in close relation to real translation problems and empirical data, providing useful and practical insights into the personalised input that translators inevitably give to their work.

Resumen: This volume explores the expansion of audiovisual translation studies and practices within European institutions, universities and businesses. The wide variety of contributions from researchers and practitioners from different countries and backgrounds reflects the rapid pace and complex nature of this expansion. The first section is dedicated to the multiple relations and intersections of AVT with culture and demonstrates how translation is conditioned by the (in)correct perception and codification of cultural values, both in dubbing and subtitling. The second section focuses on new perspectives on media accessibility, providing a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in this relatively young but growing area. The contributions are in line with a new trend in the field of AVT that presents accessibility as both an asset and a universal right, thus highlighting the importance of increased accessibility to audiovisual media content for all viewers.
