Resumen: German-language approaches to translation have been revolutionized by the theory of action (Handlungstheorie) and the related theory of translation's goal or purpose (Skopostheorie). Both these approaches are functionalist: they seek to liberate translators from servitude to the source text, seeing translation as a new communicative act that must be purposeful with respect to the translator's client and readership. As one of the leading figures in this field, Christiane Nord gives the first full survey of functionalist approaches in English. She explains the complexities of the theories and their terms, using simple language with numerous examples. The book includes an overview of how the theories developed, illustrations of the main ideas, and specific applications to translator training, literary translation, interpreting and ethics. Resumen: La especulación, el análisis y las evaluaciones de las hipótesis que se suceden en los estudios sobre la traducción contribuyen a hacer de ésta una "interdiciplina", fascinante en sí misma e instructiva para otros campos, por cuanto todo conocimiento se desarrolla con el concurso de diversas lenguas. Aunque el proceso de traducción de un texto hasta llegar a sus lectores es con frecuencia complejo y sólo parcialmente rastreable, sabemos que de hecho la tranferencia se produce. Por encima de todo, este trabajo trata de ser en su descripción evaluadora, ofreciendo a sus lectores una crítica bien informada de la traducción y animando a los traductores a preservar en el empeño. Resumen: Memes of Translation is a search for coherence in translation theory based on the notion of Memes: ideas that spread, develop and replicate, like genes. The author explores a wide range of ideas on translation, mapping the "meme pool" of translation theory with chapters on translation history, norms, strategies, assessment, ethics, and translator training. The aim of the book is to search for a perspective from which the immense variety of ideas about translation can be related. The unifying thread is the philosophy of Karl Popper. The book proposes the beginnings of a Popperian theory of translation, based on the fundamental concepts of norms, strategies, and values. A key idea is that a translation itself is a theory or hypothesis concerning the source text. This hypothesis is then subjected to testing, refinement, and perhaps even rejection, just like any other hypothesis.

Resumen: Introduction to Spanish Translation is designed for a third or fourth year college Spanish course. It presents the history, theory and practice of Spanish-to-English translation (with some consideration of English-to-Spanish translation). Resumen: Más antigua que las dinastías chinas o egipcias, la traducción oral (o interpretación) cuenta con una historia propia que se desarrolla a lo largo de los siglos. Su segunda vertiente, la traducción escrita, es, como resulta obvio, posterior a la escritura, pero no menos rica que la primera, siendo los textos sumerio-acadios del siglo XVIII a. de C. los primeros testimonios con los que contamos en la actualidad. A pesar de ser una tarea tan antigua, las primeras reflexiones sobre la traducción en Occidente datan del siglo I a. de C., es decir, son diecisiete siglos posteriores a la existencia de esas primeras fuentes bilingües (Vega, 1994:77). Más de veinte siglos transcurrieron hasta que James Holmes (Venuti, 2000: 172-85) esbozó el primer mapa de la traducción en tanto disciplina de estudios, en sus ramas de teoría pura y aplicada. además, sólo a fines del siglo pasado fuimos testigos del importante surgimiento de carreras específicas de Traducción e Interpretación, independientes de las tradicionales licenciaturas en Lenguas o en Letras, en universidades de todo el mundo.

Resumen: La complejidad de conceptuar el término "traducción" y la dificultad para definirlo nos lleva a realizar un análisis histórico para poder así observar cómo la "traducción" ha sido comprendida y practicada en las sociedades modernas. La importancia ético-política de la traducción está asociada con la construcción, transformación o interrupción (discontinuidad, quiebre) de las relaciones y comprende además obligaciones morales por parte del emisor como del receptor.
