Resumen: In the early pos-war decades, Translation Studies was considered to be a subdivisi'on of comparative literature or of applied linguistics, depending on the approach of the scholar concerned. Since the mid-1980s it has gained recognition as an independent discipline in its own right - or, as one might more aptly put it, given the large number of subjects with which it overlaps, an interdiscipline. This was the approach adopted for the international congress held in September 1992 at the Institute of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Vienna to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its foundation. This volume contains a selection of the 163 papers read at the Congress on topics varying from the medieval translator and cultural pluralism to computational tools and the process of simultaneous interpretation.

Resumen: The translation, dissemination and reception of knowledge has served as an excellent indicator of changing ideologies and the major catalyst for institutional changes, language reforms and social transformation in China. However, English representations of the Chinese tradition of translation (e.g. Hung 2005; Hung and Pollard 2009) have not incorporated research findings from Chinese studies (e.g. Cohen 1995; Amelung, Kurtz and Lackner 2001; Elman 2005) and tend to provide unsubstantiated generalizations and hasty conclusions. This article uses a combination of "cultural tool" (Even-Zohar 2005) and "culture planning" (Even-Zohar 2008) as a frame of reference to provide a macroscopic perspective on knowledge translation in different Chinese historical periods as "a means of planning" (Toury 2002:?166) to promote religious agendas, modernize traditional Chinese natural studies, Westernize educational and academic systems, facilitate modernization of the state or participate in global knowledge production.

Resumen: A History of Modern Translation Knowledge is the first attempt to map the coming into being of modern thinking about translation. It breaks with the well-established tradition of viewing history through the reductive lens of schools, theories, turns or interdisciplinary exchanges. It also challenges the artificial distinction between past and present and it sustains that the latter's historical roots go back far beyond the 1970s. Translation Studies is but part of a broader set of discourses on translation we propose to label "translation knowledge". This book concentrates on seven processes that make up the history of modern translation knowledge: generating, mapping, internationalising, historicising, analysing, disseminating and applying knowledge. Resumen: La obra de Alfonso X no es la de un sabio que accidentalmente es rey, sino la de un rey que entiende el saber como algo integrado en sus deberes como tal. El concepto cultural alfonsí proviene de una respuesta anómala a circunstancias no menos desusadas desde la perspectiva occidental. Ningún rey cristiano hasta él, había sido un profesional de las letras. La única referencia válida son los califas de la España musulmana, para quienes la poesía y las ciencia quedaban incorporadas a la personalidad del soberano. Alfonso X procuraba encarnar esa idea del rey no sólo como gobernate, sino como maestro de su pueblo y por ello su ingente obra queda inmersa en una misma finalidad, a la vez política y didáctica, escrita por tanto, en vulgar, Este fue su logro definitivo: contribuir al desarrollo del castellano en detrimento del latín y los dialectos iberorromanos. Entre los diversos temas de esta obra se analizan: "El mundo de las traducciones", "Traducciones secundarias" y "La escuela de traductores, una vez más".
