Resumen: Arising from cultural anthropology in the late 1980s and early 1990s, postcolonial translation theory is based on the observation that translation has often served as an important channel of empire. Douglas Robinson begins with a general presentation of postcolonial theory, examines current theories of the power differentials that control what gets translated and how, and traces the historical development of postcolonial thought about translation. He also explores the negative and positive impact of translation in the postcolonial context, reviewing various critiques of postcolonial translation theory and providing a glossary of key words. The result is a clear and useful guide to some of the most complex and critical issues in contemporary translation studies.

Resumen: El cambio de dirección de los estudios lingüísticos, que se apartan de la tendenciadominante(que consitía en estudiar sistemas abstractos y claificar unidades mínimas) para analizar el texto en su contexto, no tarda en reflejarse en los estudios de traducción. Éstos también despalzan su foco de atención: ya no se limitan única y exclusivamente a la equivalencia de oraciones y de unidades individuales dentro de los confinesde la oración, que deja de ser la únidad básica de trabajo y le cede el puesto al texto, intimamente ligado al contexto socio-cultural en el que surge.

Resumen: El texto turístico es un texto multifuncional que combina distintas disciplinas y modalida-des discursivas, así como una gran riqueza léxica. La abundante presencia de culturemas en este tipo de textos motiva su elección para el presente estudio. Las áreas temáticas presentes en estos textos incluyen temáticas tan diferentes como la arquitectura, la historia, la geografía, la economía, los deportes, el arte y la gastronomía, un ámbito especialmente enraizado en la cultura de un pueblo y que ofrece multitud de elementos que revelan la tradición y las costumbres de un grupo social. En este artículo se aborda el estudio de la transmisión de la cultura a través de un análisis multilingüe de los culturemas del ámbito gastronómico en los pares de lenguas español-inglés y español-alemán. Para llevar a cabo dicho trabajo se realiza, en primer lugar, una caracterización teórica de la traducción del texto turístico. Seguidamente, se da cuenta de los principales elementos que conforman la tipología textual de las guías turísticas. Finalmente, se ofrece el análisis de un corpus léxico de culturemas gastronómicos extraídos de una guía promocional de la Comunidad Valenciana elaborada por la Consejería de Turismo, Cultura y Deporte y editada en 2009, y que actualmente está en vigor.

Resumen: Gendered and sexual identities are unstable constructions which reveal a great deal about the ideologies and power relatinships affecting individuals and societies. The interaction between gender/sex studies and translation studies points to a fascinating arena of discursive conflict in which our intimate desires and identities are established or rejected, (re)negotiated or censored, sanctioned or tabooed. This volume explores diverse and heterogeneous aspects of the manipulation of gendered and sexual identities. Contributors examine translation as a feminist practice and/or theory; the importance of gender-related context in translation; the creation of a female image of secondariness through dubbing and state censoriship; attempts to suppress the blantantly patriarchal and sexist references in the German dubbed versions of James Bond films; the construction of national heroism and national identity as male preserve; the enactment of Chamberlain's 'gender metaphorics' in Scliar and Calvino; the transformation of Japanese romance fiction through Harlequin translations; the translations of the erotic as site for testing the complex rewriting(s) of identity in sociohistorical term; and the emergence of NRTs (New Reproductive Technologies), which is causing fundamental changes in the perception of 'creativity' or 'procreation' as male domains.

Resumen: In this book Umberto Eco argues that translation is not about comparing two languages, but about the interpretation of a text in two different languages, thus involving a shift between cultures. An author whose works have appeared in many languages, Eco is also the translator of Gérard de Nerval's Sylvie and Raymond Queneau's Exercices de style from French into Italian. In Experiences in Translation he draws on his substantial practical experience to identify and discuss some central problems of translation. As he convincingly demonstrates, a translation can express an evident deep sense of a text even when violating both lexical and referential faithfulness. Depicting translation as a semiotic task, he uses a wide range of source materials as illustration: the translations of his own and other novels, translations of the dialogue of American films into Italian, and various versions of the Bible. In the second part of his study he deals with translation theories proposed by Jakobson, Steiner, Peirce, and others. Overall, Eco identifies the different types of interpretive acts that count as translation. An enticing new typology emerges, based on his insistence on a common-sense approach and the necessity of taking a critical stance.
