Resumen: Los estudios que aquí se presentan muestran las múltiples vertientes y puntos de vista desde los que se puede analizar la traducción especializada, así como ejemplifican las diferentes modalidades de traducción. Entendemos por vertiente las perspectivas alternativas basadas en intereses y finalidades de investigación diverswos, o lo que se denomina enfoques de traducción y que incluyen los enfoques lingüísticos, textuales, cognitivos, comunicativos y socioculturales. y filosóficos y hermenéuticos.

Resumen: Sin duda, los modos de estudios han variado grandemente, y el historiador, el lingüista, el filósofo, el sociólogo y aun el poeta o el novelista han visto cómo se solicitaba su concurso para participar en esta tarea, y se ha visto como se reconciliaban actitudes que en otra época se habían enfrentado encarnizadamente. La interrelación de las diferentes perspectivas culturales, agregadas a los diferentes enfoques con los que hoy se estudian los problemas de la traducción pedían un libro en el que se expusiera una muestra representativa de lo que ha sido la teoría de la traducción a lo largo tiempo, y a través de las diferentes culturas en la que se ha manifestado la necesidad de comprender este fenómeno. El siguiente texto presenta al lector interesado algunos de los momentos más salientes del debate que esta teoría ha suscitado; pretende, asimismo, enriquecer esta presentación, al incluir textos que pertenecen a tradiciones culturales o lenguas poco o mal representadas anteriormente.

Resumen: A History of Modern Translation Knowledge is the first attempt to map the coming into being of modern thinking about translation. It breaks with the well-established tradition of viewing history through the reductive lens of schools, theories, turns or interdisciplinary exchanges. It also challenges the artificial distinction between past and present and it sustains that the latter's historical roots go back far beyond the 1970s. Translation Studies is but part of a broader set of discourses on translation we propose to label "translation knowledge". This book concentrates on seven processes that make up the history of modern translation knowledge: generating, mapping, internationalising, historicising, analysing, disseminating and applying knowledge. All processes are covered by 58 domain experts and allocated over 55 chapters, with cross-references. This book is indispensable reading for advanced Master- and PhD-students in Translation Studies who need background information on the history of their field, with relevance for Europe, the Americas and large parts of Asia. It will also interest students and scholars working in cultural and social history.
