Resumen: In the early pos-war decades, Translation Studies was considered to be a subdivisi'on of comparative literature or of applied linguistics, depending on the approach of the scholar concerned. Since the mid-1980s it has gained recognition as an independent discipline in its own right - or, as one might more aptly put it, given the large number of subjects with which it overlaps, an interdiscipline. This was the approach adopted for the international congress held in September 1992 at the Institute of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Vienna to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its foundation. This volume contains a selection of the 163 papers read at the Congress on topics varying from the medieval translator and cultural pluralism to computational tools and the process of simultaneous interpretation.

Resumen: German-language approaches to translation have been revolutionized by the theory of action (Handlungstheorie) and the related theory of translation's goal or purpose (Skopostheorie). Both these approaches are functionalist: they seek to liberate translators from servitude to the source text, seeing translation as a new communicative act that must be purposeful with respect to the translator's client and readership. As one of the leading figures in this field, Christiane Nord gives the first full survey of functionalist approaches in English. She explains the complexities of the theories and their terms, using simple language with numerous examples. Resumen: A History of Modern Translation Knowledge is the first attempt to map the coming into being of modern thinking about translation. It breaks with the well-established tradition of viewing history through the reductive lens of schools, theories, turns or interdisciplinary exchanges. It also challenges the artificial distinction between past and present and it sustains that the latter's historical roots go back far beyond the 1970s. Resumen: Al igual que el anterior manual Estructuras circunstanciales en la traducción francés-español/español-francés, con ejercicios, publicado en esta misma editorial, este libro se dirige a estudiantes de lengua francesa con un nivel medio alto que deseen profundizar en el conocimiento del idioma. Este manual contiene ocho capítulos relacionados con los principales componentes de la morfología francesa, fundamentados en el mismo planteamiento metodológico y lingüístico que el anterior libro, consistente en abordar aspectos gramaticales de la lengua francesa desde la óptica de la gramática contrastiva. Resumen: Este manual va dirigido a estudiantes de lengua francesa, con un nivel alto que deseen profundizar en el conocimiento del idioma. En él se recogen las principales estructuras circunstanciales francesas, respectivamente acompañadas de sus equivalentes en español así como determinadas expresiones circunstanciales en español con su traducción al francés. Desde este enfoque contrastivo, el manual tiene por objetivo el afianzamiento de la expresión escrita en el campo de la traducción (directa e inversa) y la redacción, teniendo en cuenta tres criterios: la corrección gramatical, la claridad enunciativa y la riqueza expresiva.
