Resumen: In the early pos-war decades, Translation Studies was considered to be a subdivisi'on of comparative literature or of applied linguistics, depending on the approach of the scholar concerned. Since the mid-1980s it has gained recognition as an independent discipline in its own right - or, as one might more aptly put it, given the large number of subjects with which it overlaps, an interdiscipline. This was the approach adopted for the international congress held in September 1992 at the Institute of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Vienna to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its foundation. This volume contains a selection of the 163 papers read at the Congress on topics varying from the medieval translator and cultural pluralism to computational tools and the process of simultaneous interpretation.

Resumen: German-language approaches to translation have been revolutionized by the theory of action (Handlungstheorie) and the related theory of translation's goal or purpose (Skopostheorie). Both these approaches are functionalist: they seek to liberate translators from servitude to the source text, seeing translation as a new communicative act that must be purposeful with respect to the translator's client and readership. As one of the leading figures in this field, Christiane Nord gives the first full survey of functionalist approaches in English. She explains the complexities of the theories and their terms, using simple language with numerous examples. The book includes an overview of how the theories developed, illustrations of the main ideas, and specific applications to translator training, literary translation, interpreting and ethics. The survey concludes with a concise review of the criticisms that have been made of the theories, together with perspectives for the future development of functionalist approaches.

Resumen: A History of Modern Translation Knowledge is the first attempt to map the coming into being of modern thinking about translation. It breaks with the well-established tradition of viewing history through the reductive lens of schools, theories, turns or interdisciplinary exchanges. It also challenges the artificial distinction between past and present and it sustains that the latter's historical roots go back far beyond the 1970s. Translation Studies is but part of a broader set of discourses on translation we propose to label "translation knowledge". This book concentrates on seven processes that make up the history of modern translation knowledge: generating, mapping, internationalising, historicising, analysing, disseminating and applying knowledge. All processes are covered by 58 domain experts and allocated over 55 chapters, with cross-references. This book is indispensable reading for advanced Master- and PhD-students in Translation Studies who need background information on the history of their field, with relevance for Europe, the Americas and large parts of Asia. It will also interest students and scholars working in cultural and social history.

Resumen: Más antigua que las dinastías chinas o egipcias, la traducción oral (o interpretación) cuenta con una historia propia que se desarrolla a lo largo de los siglos. Su segunda vertiente, la traducción escrita, es, como resulta obvio, posterior a la escritura, pero no menos rica que la primera, siendo los textos sumerio-acadios del siglo XVIII a. de C. los primeros testimonios con los que contamos en la actualidad. A pesar de ser una tarea tan antigua, las primeras reflexiones sobre la traducción en Occidente datan del siglo I a. de C., es decir, son diecisiete siglos posteriores a la existencia de esas primeras fuentes bilingües (Vega, 1994:77). Más de veinte siglos transcurrieron hasta que James Holmes (Venuti, 2000: 172-85) esbozó el primer mapa de la traducción en tanto disciplina de estudios, en sus ramas de teoría pura y aplicada. además, sólo a fines del siglo pasado fuimos testigos del importante surgimiento de carreras específicas de Traducción e Interpretación, independientes de las tradicionales licenciaturas en Lenguas o en Letras, en universidades de todo el mundo.
