Resumen: The translation, dissemination and reception of knowledge has served as an excellent indicator of changing ideologies and the major catalyst for institutional changes, language reforms and social transformation in China. However, English representations of the Chinese tradition of translation (e.g. Hung 2005; Hung and Pollard 2009) have not incorporated research findings from Chinese studies (e.g. Cohen 1995; Amelung, Kurtz and Lackner 2001; Elman 2005) and tend to provide unsubstantiated generalizations and hasty conclusions. This article uses a combination of "cultural tool" (Even-Zohar 2005) and "culture planning" (Even-Zohar 2008) as a frame of reference to provide a macroscopic perspective on knowledge translation in different Chinese historical periods as "a means of planning" (Toury 2002:?166) to promote religious agendas, modernize traditional Chinese natural studies, Westernize educational and academic systems, facilitate modernization of the state or participate in global knowledge production.

Resumen: A History of Modern Translation Knowledge is the first attempt to map the coming into being of modern thinking about translation. It breaks with the well-established tradition of viewing history through the reductive lens of schools, theories, turns or interdisciplinary exchanges. It also challenges the artificial distinction between past and present and it sustains that the latter's historical roots go back far beyond the 1970s. Translation Studies is but part of a broader set of discourses on translation we propose to label "translation knowledge". This book concentrates on seven processes that make up the history of modern translation knowledge: generating, mapping, internationalising, historicising, analysing, disseminating and applying knowledge. All processes are covered by 58 domain experts and allocated over 55 chapters, with cross-references. Resumen: Más antigua que las dinastías chinas o egipcias, la traducción oral (o interpretación) cuenta con una historia propia que se desarrolla a lo largo de los siglos. Su segunda vertiente, la traducción escrita, es, como resulta obvio, posterior a la escritura, pero no menos rica que la primera, siendo los textos sumerio-acadios del siglo XVIII a. de C. los primeros testimonios con los que contamos en la actualidad. A pesar de ser una tarea tan antigua, las primeras reflexiones sobre la traducción en Occidente datan del siglo I a. de C., es decir, son diecisiete siglos posteriores a la existencia de esas primeras fuentes bilingües (Vega, 1994:77). Más de veinte siglos transcurrieron hasta que James Holmes (Venuti, 2000: 172-85) esbozó el primer mapa de la traducción en tanto disciplina de estudios, en sus ramas de teoría pura y aplicada. además, sólo a fines del siglo pasado fuimos testigos del importante surgimiento de carreras específicas de Traducción e Interpretación, independientes de las tradicionales licenciaturas en Lenguas o en Letras, en universidades de todo el mundo.

Resumen: José Luis Álvarez de Linera fue un poco conocido historiador y archivero que trabajó en torno a instituciones católicas de beneficencia en Málaga, durante las últimas décadas del siglo XIX y las primeras del siglo XX. Fue autor de una monumental historia de la muerte y la enfermedad en Málaga, desde esa perspectiva asistencial, en cuya elaboración manejó un documento de archivo consular británico que él mismo tradujo al castellano. Transcribimos tanto el original como las dos subsiguientes versiones (en borrador y en limpio) y de su análisis extraemos una caracterización del traductor a partir del criterio de fidelidad, y algunas hipótesis acerca de los patrones de conducta relativos a la necesidad de adaptar textos por motivos religiosos.
